25 years, one website: ISS in Real Time captures quarter-century on space station

NASA has launched a new website that captures 25 years of real-time data from the International Space Station (ISS). The site, called ISS in Real Time, was created by two NASA contractors, Ben Feist and David Charney, who spent over 11 months building it. The site is a treasure trove of data, containing mission logs, space-to-ground audio, photos, videos, and articles about the ISS.

The website's creators scraped data from various sources, including NASA's internal archives and public repositories like Flickr. They also used artificial intelligence to sort through tens of thousands of files to learn if they were appropriate for inclusion on the site. The resulting site is an impressive feat of software engineering, with over 500 times more data than its predecessor, Apollo in Real Time.

The website allows users to explore the ISS's history, including every day since November 2, 2000, when Expedition One crew arrived at the space station. Users can access transcripts of space-to-ground comm audio, see where the ISS was in orbit over Earth, and view information about astronauts and spacecraft docked at any given moment.

Feist and Charney plan to continue adding data to the site as it is released by NASA, making it as "in real-time" as possible. The website's longevity sets it apart from other interactive experiences, with users able to explore the ISS's history for years to come.

The launch of ISS in Real Time coincides with a milestone: the ISS has now had a continuous human presence on board for 25 years. While there is no single way to experience this achievement, Feist and Charney's website provides an immersive and engaging way to explore the ISS's history.

πŸš€πŸ˜± just saw that NASA's new website ISS in Real Time has like 500x more data than Apollo in Real Time... think about all the stuff they're leaving out πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ still, nice job by Ben Feist and David Charney for making it happen, but I mean, what's the point of having a website if we just end up with more info to sift through? πŸ˜… NASA's been on orbit for 25 years now... that's like, a quarter century of space madness 🚫

I'm low-key hyped about this NASA site 🀩... I mean, not too excited or anything, but it's still pretty cool. I think it's a great idea for someone like me to be able to dig through all that data and learn more about space stuff. But, on the other hand, I don't know if it's really necessary - I mean, can't NASA just release the info online already? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ... wait, no, that wouldn't be as cool if they did! πŸ˜„

I'm also a bit skeptical about the AI part of it... I don't want them to mess up the data or anything. But at the same time, if it's been checked by NASA and their contractors, then maybe it's good to go? πŸ€” I guess what I'm saying is, I'm kinda curious to see how it all works out, but also a little worried about it being too perfect... that would be weird! πŸ˜‚

Omg 😍 this is like totally amazing ! I cant even imagine how much work went into building that site 🀯 11 months is a looong time but its so cool that we can finally access all those years of data πŸ“Š and history πŸ•°οΈ from the ISS its like having a virtual window to space πŸš€ and Feist & Charney are geniuses for using AI to sort through all that data πŸ’»

oh man, can you even imagine browsing through all that space station data it's crazy how much history is packed into one site πŸ€―πŸš€ i feel like we're living in a sci-fi movie or something 500 times more data than before? that's insane! i love how the creators used AI to sort through all those files, it just shows what amazing stuff can be achieved when people work together and share their passion for space exploration πŸ’»πŸ‘

What a fantastic development! The launch of ISS in Real Time is truly a game-changer in terms of democratizing access to space data πŸš€πŸ’». I mean, who wouldn't want to delve into the vast archives of NASA's internal records and public repositories like Flickr? It's amazing to think that Feist and Charney spent over 11 months building this treasure trove of data, and it's now freely available for us to explore.

The fact that they used AI to sort through tens of thousands of files is just mind-boggling – I'm not surprised it contains over 500 times more data than its predecessor, Apollo in Real Time 🀯. And what a milestone to coincide with the ISS having a continuous human presence on board for 25 years! It's a testament to human ingenuity and the importance of preserving our space exploration history.

I do hope they continue to add new data to the site as it becomes available – it's an incredible resource that will surely provide endless insights into the ISS's mission and operations. Kudos to Feist and Charney for their innovative work!

Can you believe it? 🀯 I mean, think about it – 25 whole years of humans living and working on that space station. It's crazy! I was still in school when Expedition One arrived back in '00 πŸ˜‚. Now we have this amazing website with all the data from ISS in real-time. It's like stepping into a time machine, you know? You can see what was happening 24/7, back to November '00. I spent hours just browsing through it yesterday... I mean, who knew there were so many stories about toilet maintenance on the ISS πŸš½πŸ˜‚! Feels like we're getting a glimpse of history right before our eyes.

can you believe that we get to live in times where NASA can just put up a website with all this insane data from the ISS? 🀯 I mean, 500 times more data than Apollo in Real Time? that's wild! πŸš€ and it's not just about the numbers, it's about how it shows you what's going on over there. like, you can actually see where the ISS was in orbit at any given time, which is just mind-blowing 🌐. I'm all for Feist and Charney adding more data to this site, because it's not just some dusty old archive, it's a living history of humanity in space πŸš€πŸ’«

OMG 🀯 just saw this new site from NASA that's got like so much info about the International Space Station πŸš€! I mean 25 years of data in real-time is crazy 🀯, right? The devs did such a great job too, scraping all these files and using AI to sort them out. It's like stepping into history here πŸ•°οΈ, every day since 2000 is there. Can't wait for more updates! πŸ‘
