Northern Ireland set for World Cup wild card after Nations League triumph, but group stage draw raises questions about their chances in the tournament.
In a dramatic twist to the qualifying process, Northern Ireland have secured a World Cup spot by virtue of their third-place finish in their qualifying group behind Germany and Slovakia, yet they have also earned an opportunity to qualify via the Nations League playoffs.
Their first hurdle lies with Italy in March's semi-final playoff against Italy, which will be followed by a winner-takes-all final against either Wales or Bosnia-Herzegovina. If successful, Northern Ireland could then progress to face hosts Canada in Toronto on June 12th, before facing Switzerland and Qatar in the group stage.
Michael O'Neill is excited about his team's prospects.
"We know there are significant hurdles to overcome before we can think too far ahead, so we'll stay grounded," he said after the draw. "But this is a young, fearless squad, growing in confidence all the time. We have an opportunity to reach a World Cup, and this group will give everything it has to make that a reality."
The challenge in Group B looks daunting, but O'Neill believes his team can rise to the occasion.
"For us, it's about taking it step by step - and that starts with Italy in March," he said.
