After the Flood series two review – Sophie Rundle shines in the return of this dark detective drama

"Dark Secrets Uncovered: After the Flood Returns with a Familiar yet Frustrating Formula"

The second season of ITV's crime drama "After the Flood" has finally arrived, and it's a mixed bag. Sophie Rundle returns as Jo Marshall, a detective with a strong moral compass and a penchant for getting entangled in dark secrets. While Rundle remains luminous in her lead role, the show's formulaic approach to storytelling starts to feel less than thrilling.

The plot centers around a series of mysterious events unfolding in a small Yorkshire town, where Jo's investigations are met with resistance from corrupt officials. As she delves deeper into the case, she must navigate the complex web of relationships and alliances that bind the community together. The show's writers cleverly weave together subplots that react to the darker surprises of the first season, but these new revelations are less intriguing than their predecessors.

One of the most significant changes in the second season is the absence of a flood, which was a pivotal element of the first run's narrative. This lack of a central plot device feels like a step down from the show's ambitions in its earlier seasons. Instead, we're left with a more conventional whodunit mystery that lacks the originality and depth of its predecessor.

Rundle shines once again as Jo, bringing her trademark warmth and empathy to the role. Her dynamic with supporting cast members Lorraine Ashbourne (her real-life partner) and Jill Halfpenny adds some much-needed levity to the show. However, even Rundle's talents can't elevate a formula that starts to feel overly familiar.

Ultimately, "After the Flood" is a premium genre piece that still manages to entertain, but its lack of innovation and willingness to retread old ground makes it less engaging than it could be. With some tweaks to its storytelling and pacing, this show could reach new heights; as it stands, it's just going through the motions.

I'm soooo over how predictable "After the Flood" is 🙄, like I get it they want it to be a whodunit mystery but can't they mix it up some more? And omg no flood in season 2?! what happened to that dramatic element? 😱 Sophie Rundle is still killing it as Jo though, her chemistry with the rest of the cast is fire 💁‍♀️, but come on ITV, get your act together and spice things up! I'm all about it when they tackle complex topics, this show feels so formulaic 🤯. Give me some twists, turns, and surprises any day! 👀

omg u guys i'm literally so done with after the flood season 2 already! 🤯 they're keeping jo marshall as the lead but like what's the point if the plot is still just formulaic? i mean i loved sophie rundle in her role but even she can't save this show from its repetitive storytelling. and omg no more flood!!! 😂 that was literally the best part of season 1! now it's just your run of the mill whodunit mystery 🙄 idk what they're trying to do here, it feels like they're just phoning it in at this point. still i guess its kinda cute when sophie rundle and her real-life partner lorraine ashbourne keep stealing the scenes 💕

I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed in this season of "After the Flood". It feels like they're phoning it in, relying on Sophie Rundle's talent to carry the show rather than pushing the boundaries of storytelling. The formulaic approach is exactly that - a formula - and it needs some shaking up. Maybe it's time to introduce more complex characters or plot twists? I mean, we've seen this type of whodunit before, and if they're not bringing something new to the table, it's just going to feel like the same old same old. And let's be real, without that flood as a central plot device, the show feels a bit...flat. They need to invest in some more creative storytelling or risk being left behind by their competitors 🤔

the thing is, i loved the first season so much, but now that it's back, it feels like they're just rehashing old stuff. the flood was a huge part of what made it so special and now it's gone? that's gotta be frustrating for fans who were invested in that aspect of the show. and yeah, sophie rundle is still amazing as jo, but even she can't make this formula exciting 😐. i think they need to shake things up a bit, add some new twists and turns to keep us guessing. otherwise, it's just gonna feel like we've seen it all before 👀

I'm kinda disappointed about this season 🤔... I mean, Sophie Rundle is still awesome as Jo Marshall, don't get me wrong! 😊 But seriously, the whole "mysterious events in a small Yorkshire town" thing has been done before and it feels so formulaic now. Can't they just mix it up a bit? 👀 The lack of a flood plot point was a big part of what made the first season so unique. 🌧️ Still, Rundle's chemistry with her co-stars is strong (Lorraine Ashbourne is super cute btw 😉) and I'm always down for a good whodunit mystery. But overall, it feels like they're just phoning it in this season... 😐

I'm so underwhelmed by season 2 of "After the Flood" 🤔👎 The lack of a central flood plot device is a big deal for me - it's what made the first season so unique and captivating. Now, it feels like we're just dealing with another run-of-the-mill whodunit that doesn't really stand out.

And yeah, Sophie Rundle is still awesome as Jo Marshall 🙌, but even she can't elevate a formula that's starting to feel pretty stale. The writing's still solid, don't get me wrong, but it's like they're playing it safe and not taking any real risks. Where's the creativity? The surprises?

For a show that promises to dive deeper into its characters and their relationships, I think they're actually holding back some of the more interesting stuff 🤷‍♀️. It's like they've got all these great subplots and plot twists, but they're not really letting them breathe.

I guess what I'm saying is that "After the Flood" has potential, but it needs to shake things up a bit if it wants to stay fresh and exciting 💥. Maybe some new blood behind the writing desk or a change of pace would do it justice? 🤞

I'm kinda disappointed with season 2, you know? The first season was all about the flood and how it brought everything to a head, but now that it's gone I feel like the show is just going through the motions 😐. Don't get me wrong, Sophie Rundle is still amazing as Jo Marshall, but even she can't elevate the formulaic storytelling 🤔. It feels like they're just trying to recreate what worked last time without putting in enough effort to make it new and exciting 🔥. I mean, who needs a flood when you've got murder mysteries and small-town drama? Still, if they can mix things up a bit more, this show could be really good 💪

I was kinda loving the mystery vibes in the first season, but now it feels like they're rehashing old ideas 🤔📚. I mean, what happened to the flood? That was a wild card that kept me hooked! Now it's just more of the same whodunit nonsense... 😐 Lorraine and Jill are still great, but even their chemistry can't save this show from feeling like Groundhog Day 🕰️. They need to shake things up or I'll be outta here in no time 👋. Can we get some new faces in the cast? 🤝

🤔 I'm not sure why they had to change things up so much for the second season. I mean, Jo Marshall was one of my favorite characters! 💁‍♀️ She's still awesome, but it feels like she's just going through the motions with this new case. And yeah, no flood? That was a major part of what made the first season so interesting 🌊. Now it just feels like another generic whodunit mystery. Can't they come up with something more original? 😐

I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed with season 2 of "After the Flood". They already had such a great first season with that flood storyline, and now they're like "oh let's just go back to basics with a whodunit mystery" 🤔. Don't get me wrong, Sophie Rundle is amazing as Jo Marshall, but even she can't save this show from feeling like it's stuck in a rut.

I love how the show tries to keep things fresh by adding more subplots and character dynamics, but sometimes I feel like they're trying too hard to fit all these pieces together. It's like they forgot that less is often more 😊. And yeah, the absence of the flood as a central plot point really does make it feel like a step back.

Still, the supporting cast is on point, and Lorraine Ashbourne and Jill Halfpenny bring so much energy to their roles 🤗. If they could just shake off this formulaic vibe and try something new, I think "After the Flood" could be truly unstoppable 💥. Fingers crossed for season 3!

I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed with season 2 of "After the Flood". I mean, Sophie Rundle is still amazing as Jo Marshall, but the storyline feels like they're rehashing old stuff instead of taking some real risks. Where's the originality? The lack of that flood plot device really shows in this season. It's just a more standard whodunit mystery. Don't get me wrong, I love a good detective show, but this one needs to shake things up if it wants to keep me hooked 🤔💡

idk man... season 2 feels like they're rehashing everything from season 1 🤔📺. rundle is still amazing tho 💡 she brings so much depth to jo's character, but even her awesomeness can't save this formulaic show from getting stale 😴. it's like they took all the cool stuff from season 1 and just... repeated it? 🙅‍♀️💔

🤔 I mean, I'm not a huge fan of the formulaic approach. Like, I know they're trying to keep things consistent with Jo Marshall, but sometimes less is more, you know? The second season feels like they're rehashing old ideas instead of taking risks and exploring new directions. Still, Sophie Rundle's performance as always 🔥...

i mean, i think they did a good job bringing back jo marshall but like, the formula is so repetitive now... the first season was so dark and twisty, and then we're just getting more of the same in the second. i love sophie rundle's character though, she's always so well-written 🤔.

and what's up with no flood this time? it felt like a big part of what made the show interesting in the first place. now it's just more of a generic whodunit. idk, maybe they're trying to shake things up but honestly, i'm not feeling it 😐.

anyway, lorraine and jill are still my fave parts of the show, they bring some much-needed humor and levity to an otherwise dark series 🤣. but overall, i agree with you, this season feels like they're just phoning it in now...

I'm not loving the formula they're using for this season 🤔💡. They're playing it safe with the whodunit mystery which was kinda cool in the first season but now feels like a rehash of stuff we've seen before. And can't they just keep the flood as a plot device? It added so much drama and tension to the story line!

I do love Sophie Rundle's character though, she's always bringing her A-game 💁‍♀️👏. And I'm loving the dynamic between her and Lorraine Ashbourne, that's some real-life chemistry right there 😊. But overall, the show just needs to mix things up a bit and try new things, you know? Don't get me wrong, it's still an entertaining watch but I'm feeling like they're stuck in a rut 🔄💨
