Alice: Return to Wonderland review – a wonderfully eccentric new rabbit hole to go down

In this new iteration of "Alice: Return to Wonderland", the titular character has traded in her carefree youth for the drudgery of adulthood. Once a bright and whimsical young girl, Alice now navigates the complexities of post-war Cardiff with a grey suit-clad seriousness that belies the sparkling imagination that once drove her. Yet, when the White Rabbit reappears in her life, sweeping her back into the fantastical world of Wonderland, Alice's inner child is reignited.

In this inventive and playful retelling, set designer Elin Steele conjures up a kaleidoscopic landscape of fantasy and hallucination that draws heavily from Carroll's original tales. The musical also incorporates the idea of power and tyranny, cleverly using children's games as metaphors for the adult world. Hannah McPake's lyrics add to this heady mix, infusing intelligent humour throughout.

The cast delivers impressive performances, including an entertaining Elvis impersonation by Humpty Dumpty (Oliver Wood) in "Out of My Box/Life on the Edge". Emily Ivana Hawkins shines as Alice, belting out an infectious number in "Guess Who's Back" alongside the Hatter (Max James) and Unicorn. Caitlin Lavagna brings a regal presence to the Red Queen, delivering a catchy power ballad that showcases her impressive vocal range.

What sets this musical apart from other adaptations of Carroll's classic tale is its thoughtful exploration of identity and the importance of imagination. As the Hatter so eloquently puts it: "You don't stop playing because you grow up, you grow up because you stop playing." This message resonates throughout the show, a reminder that playfulness and creativity are essential to a fulfilling life.

Director Elin Steele's costumes and puppets are a visual treat, particularly the stunning Jabberwock design. With its imaginative reworking of an old story, this musical invites audiences to rediscover the magic of Wonderland – and themselves.

I just saw the craziest video of a cat playing the piano 🐈🎹 and it got me thinking about how cats have these weird little habits that are like their own language 😹... like when my cat curls up in a ball during TV time and starts snoring like a chainsaw! I swear, they're trying to communicate some deep feline wisdom or something. Anyway, back to the musical - yeah, it sounds super fun! 👏

I'm lovin' how they've reinvented Alice: Return to Wonderland 🎭! The post-war Cardiff setting is so cool, I wish they'd explore that aspect more tho 😊. But seriously, Emily Ivana Hawkins as Alice is perfection 💖, her voice is everything! And omg, Humpty Dumpty's Elvis impersonation had me DYING 🤣, Oliver Wood is a comedic genius 👏. The message about not growing up too quickly is so relatable, I think we can all agree on that 🙌. Director Elin Steele's work is top-notch, the costumes and puppets are insane 🔥. This musical is a reminder to stay playful and imaginative, something we could all use more of 🤔.

omg i'm so down for this new alice musical! 🤩 they've done such a great job with the set design and costumes, it's like stepping into wonderland itself! 💥 and i love how they're using children's games as metaphors for the adult world, it's so clever. emily ivana hawkins as alice is giving me all the feels, her voice is amazing 🎤 and that elvis impersonation by humpty dumpty had me giggling out loud 😂. i'm also really excited to see how they're exploring identity and imagination in this show, it's so important for us to hold onto our creativity as we grow up 🌟

😊 I think what really stands out about this new iteration of Alice: Return to Wonderland is how it balances whimsy with some pretty heavy themes. Like, we've all been there where life feels like a never-ending grind, but then something pops up that brings back the magic... in my case, it's probably just Netflix binge-watching 🤯. Seriously though, I love how they're using these fantastical worlds to comment on real issues. It's like Carroll's original stories were always meant to be more than just fun and games - there's actually some depth to them! 👏

I'm defo loving the new Alice: Return to Wonderland 🎭! The way they've adapted the story is so clever, it's like they're taking these classic characters and adults them up a notch while still keeping that playful whimsy intact 💡. I mean, who wouldn't want to see an Elvis impersonation by Humpty Dumpty 🤣? But what really got me was how they explored identity and imagination – it's so relatable, especially in today's world 🌐. The message about not losing your sense of wonder as you grow up is just so true 🎉. Elin Steele's set design is insane! 💥 I'm intrigued to see how this show stays true to the original while still feeling fresh and new 🤔.

I'm not sure about this one... 🤔 I mean, it looks like they took all the whimsy and fun out of Alice in Wonderland and replaced it with some pretty deep themes. Don't get me wrong, it's great that they're exploring identity and imagination, but I feel like it got lost in a bunch of serious songs 😕. And can we talk about how they decided to make Alice an adult? Like, what's the point of making her "grow up" if she's just gonna be as grumpy and boring as everyone else on stage? 🙄. Give me a good ol' fashioned mad tea party any day! ☕

omg have you tried that new matcha latte from starbucks?! 🤩 i mean idk if its worth all the hype but their green tea flavor is sooo good!!! 👀 anyway back to alice in wonderland... did u know that there's this super old bookshop in london that has a secret room with ancient tomes?? 📚🔍 my friend went there and took some pics and i'm DYING to see them!! 😂 what do u think about the new adaptation of alice though? 🎭

I had the craziest dream last night, I was walking along the beach with my dog and we stumbled upon a secret underwater cave... anyway, back to Alice in Wonderland - it's so cool how they made Humpty Dumpty an Elvis impersonator 🤣. I mean, who wouldn't want to see a giant egg man shaking his hips to "Burning Love"?

And have you tried that new iced coffee shop downtown? Their cold brew is insane! I had the best cup of it last week and it totally changed my morning routine. I'm not even kidding, it's like a whole different world when you're sipping on that stuff ☕️.

Oh, and speaking of worlds... have you ever noticed how weird it is to live in the same city but have completely different neighbors? Like, we just moved into a new apartment and our downstairs neighbor is literally a professional snail trainer 🐌. Yeah, it's a thing...

🤩 this whole thing feels kinda like they took all the original whimsy and charm, threw it in a blender, and hit puree. but honestly, i kinda love how it came out 🎉 still, there's somethin' about seein' an old story reimagined like this that just feels a bit...tired? is that 'cause we're all just so used to seein' versions of these stories now? idk

🤔 I'm not sure about this one... seems like they're trying too hard to make it all deep and meaningful? Like, what's with the "power and tyranny" theme via kids' games? Sounds a bit forced to me 🙃. And don't even get me started on the whole "you don't stop playing because you grow up" thing... it sounds like they're trying to sell me some kind of existential philosophy instead of just having fun 🤷‍♀️. Give me something with a bit more substance, ya know? 💡

Ugh, I'm so done with Alice trying to be all serious in this new iteration 🙄... like, girl, you're still a kid at heart, own it! But I gotta give props to this show - the cast is on point, especially Emily Ivana Hawkins as Alice (she's got some serious vocals going on 💁‍♀️). And the music? Not bad at all... that Elvis impersonation by Humpty Dumpty had me LOLing 😂. But what really gets me is how they're tackling identity and imagination - it's like, so needed in today's world 🌎. Can't wait to see more shows that remind us to keep playing and not grow up too fast 😆

I'm loving this new take on Alice in Wonderland 🤩! The way they've woven together fantasy and reality is so clever and thought-provoking 💡. I mean, who wouldn't want to explore the idea that playfulness and creativity are what keep us young at heart? 🌸 It's amazing how a story that started as a simple children's tale can still have such depth and resonance for adults too. The cast sounds incredible, I'm definitely adding this to my watchlist 📺! Elin Steele's designs look insane 🔥, especially that Jabberwock design - it's like stepping into a dream world 😴. Can't wait to dive in and see what all the fuss is about 🎉.

I gotta say, I'm loving how they're taking Alice down a darker path in this adaptation 🤔👗. It's like they're showing us that even with a tough exterior, we all still need that spark of childhood wonder to make life worth living ✨. And the way they've woven together elements of power struggles and childhood games is pure genius 👏. The cast is on point too - Emily Ivana Hawkins shines as Alice, and I'm dying over Humpty Dumpty's Elvis impression 🤣👊. But what really gets me is that this show isn't just about nostalgia; it's about embracing the importance of playfulness in our adult lives 🌈💖.

🤯 OMG have you seen those stats on the latest Disney+ numbers? 📊 They're like 1 billion subscribers in just 2 years! 💥 And we all know how much money they make from merch sales alone... $10 billion last year! 💸 Meanwhile, this "Alice: Return to Wonderland" musical is getting some serious buzz, but let's look at the numbers - it's been playing for like 6 months now and those box office stats are looking pretty decent too 📈 500k+ attendance and a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score! 🎭 But did you know that only 15% of musicals on Broadway gross more than $5 million in their first year? 💸 So, let's not get too carried away... yet 😜
