'An idealized version of LA': fabled mid-century Stahl house on sale for first time

The Los Angeles home of the year: A rare opportunity to own the iconic Stahl House for $25m.

Perched in the Hollywood Hills, the Stahl house is one of the most recognizable examples of mid-century modern architecture. The cantilevered home, which features floor-to-ceiling glass windows and a sleek, minimalist design, has been a Los Angeles landmark since its completion in 1960.

For the first time in its history, the Stahl family - who have owned the property for an astonishing 65 years - is putting it up for sale. The asking price: a staggering $25m.

According to Bruce and Shari Stahl, the children of the original owners, the decision to sell was not taken lightly. "This home has been the center of our lives for decades, but as we've gotten older, it has become increasingly challenging to care for it with the attention and energy it so richly deserves," they wrote in a statement.

The Stahl family is looking for a new owner who will not only appreciate the home's architectural significance but also understand its place in the cultural landscape of Los Angeles. "For collectors of design, patrons of architecture, or institutions seeking to safeguard an American masterpiece, there is simply nothing comparable," the listing reads.

The Stahl house has a rich history, having been featured in numerous films and TV shows over the years, including Galaxy Quest, Nurse Betty, and Playing by Heart. It was also declared a historic-cultural landmark in Los Angeles in 1999 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

Construction on the home began in 1959 and took just a year to complete, with an original price tag of $37,500. The result was an "idealized version of what everyone thinks LA is and should be," according to architectural expert Adrian Scott Fine.

The listing emphasizes that finding a buyer who will preserve the character of the space is crucial. "I think any time a longtime owner, and a stewardship like this, is transferring hands of a property like this, it always gives us a little bit of a pause โ€“ because you never know what the next owner, what their intentions will be," Fine said.

The Stahl house remains open for tours, although all slots are currently sold out through February. Potential buyers can view the home online and receive updates on the listing process.

As one of the most famous mid-century modern homes in the world, the Stahl house is a rare opportunity for architecture enthusiasts and collectors to own a piece of Los Angeles history.

omg I need to get my hands on this house ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’ฅ it's like a dream come true for me as a design freak! $25m is still way more affordable than the original price tag of $37,500 back in 1960 lol ๐Ÿค‘ can you even imagine getting to live in that iconic cantilevered home with floor-to-ceiling glass windows? I'd totally love it if whoever buys this house will take good care of it and keep its cultural significance intact ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿค” I'm low-key worried about this sale man ๐Ÿค‘... think about it, one family's got been takin' care of that home for 65 years, and now they're just gonna hand it over to some random buyer who might not even appreciate its value? I mean, what if the new owners are just lookin' to flip it for a quick buck? ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’ธ Wouldn't that be, like, super sad for the history of the house? ๐Ÿค• They should at least make sure whoever buys it is gonna do it justice, you know? Maybe they could even get some kinda preservation deal goin' on? ๐Ÿ”’ That way, LA's iconic mid-century modern style wouldn't be lost forever ๐Ÿ˜ข

OMG you guys!!! ๐Ÿคฏ I am literally FREAKING OUT over this news!!! A $25m price tag on the iconic Stahl House?!?! It's like the universe is giving us a chance to own a SLICE OF HISTORY!!! ๐Ÿ’ซ The fact that it's been in the same family for 65 years and now they're looking for someone who'll appreciate its cultural significance? Mind. Blown.

I mean, can you even imagine owning a piece of LA history?!?! Being part of the architectural landscape that has inspired so many people over the years?! It's not just about the property itself, it's about being custodians of something truly special.

And I gotta say, the fact that they're looking for someone who'll preserve the character of the space? That's music to my ears. We need more people like that in this world. Someone who'll take care of this beauty and make sure it continues to inspire future generations.

I've always been obsessed with mid-century modern architecture, and this house is literally my DREAM HOME. I can only imagine what it would be like to live there. But even if I couldn't afford it (which let's be real, $25m is NOT cheap ๐Ÿค‘), I'd still be over here living vicariously through all of you who get to tour the house and try to snag this incredible piece of history.

So, anyone out there thinking of putting in a bid? ๐Ÿค” Please, for the love of all things good and holy, make it happen!

I'm so jealous ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, can you even imagine owning that iconic Stahl House? It's like living in a piece of design history ๐Ÿ˜. The price tag might be crazy ($25m), but for someone who's passionate about architecture and collecting unique homes, it's a once-in-a-lifetime chance.

I'm curious, though - what would the new owners do with this legendary home? Would they restore it to its original glory or make some changes that would still keep its essence intact? ๐Ÿค” It's not just about owning a house; it's about preserving its story and history.

The Stahl family has been taking care of this home for 65 years, so it's no surprise they're letting it go. But finding someone who will appreciate its value is a big deal! ๐Ÿ’ฏ Maybe this sale will help other architecture enthusiasts out there find their own dream home?

I'd love to see how the new owners turn out and if they'll do justice to this LA landmark ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’ซ

I mean, who wouldn't want to shell out $25m for a home that's been on the market since they were still playing with Play-Doh? ๐Ÿ˜‚ The Stahl family must be feeling pretty old (65 years is no joke, btw). Anyway, I guess this means LA can finally get its hands on another rich person looking to decorate their pad. A piece of history for the price of a decent vacation home... sounds like a steal ๐Ÿค‘ Can't wait to see who bites and whether they'll mess with the original design.

I just saw this news about the Stahl House being sold ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’ธ and I gotta say, it's crazy that it's been on the market for 65 years! I mean, can you believe how much the property value has changed? It was originally built for like $37,500 back in '59 and now it's gonna set you back a whoppin' $25m ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. It's a no-brainer that it's gotta be one of those crazy collector's item deals where only someone who really gets the design vibe is gonna want to snag it ๐Ÿค“.

I remember watching Galaxy Quest with my family when I was younger and seeing the Stahl House for the first time... it just looks like something straight outta a dream, you know? It's surreal that people are actually going to own this piece of history now. I guess some richie gotta be willing to shell out all that cash to preserve it ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿ .

It's cool that the Stahl family is leaving it in good hands, but man, 65 years is a looong time to hold onto something... even if you love it ๐Ÿ˜‚. Can't say I blame them though; it's gotta be tough caring for this iconic property all by yourself ๐Ÿ’ช. Now, it'll just be interesting to see how the new owner decides to keep up with all that mid-century magic ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿ

omg i just cant believe its happening ๐Ÿคฏ the stahl house has been a los angeles institution for like forever and its crazy to think that the stahl family is finally selling it ๐Ÿ˜ฒ they're looking for someone who will love and care for it as much as they have, because from what i've seen of the listing process so far, it's clear they want this home to be taken care of properly ๐Ÿ’ฏ

i mean think about it, this house has been featured in so many iconic movies and tv shows over the years ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ“บ and its already a historic-cultural landmark here in los angeles ๐Ÿ›๏ธ it just feels like too good an opportunity to pass up for someone who's passionate about architecture and design ๐Ÿ’ญ

but at $25m, is it really worth it? ๐Ÿค‘ i'm not sure, but i do know that if i was in the market for a new home, this would be a no-brainer ๐Ÿ”ฅ

OMG ๐Ÿคฉ I'm DYING over this news!!! ๐Ÿ˜ The Stahl House has been my fave home EVER since I saw it featured in Playing by Heart ๐ŸŽฌ๐Ÿ’• And now, the chance to own it for $25m is like a dream come true ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ  I've always wanted to live in LA and be surrounded by iconic architecture like this. The fact that it's been on the market for 65 yrs is crazy! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ My heart goes out to the Stahl family tho, they must be sad to let go of their baby ๐Ÿค— I'm literally scrolling through the pics over and over again ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ‘€ Who else wants to see this beauty in person? ๐Ÿšช

The thought of owning the Stahl House for $25m is both exciting & intimidating ๐Ÿคฏ... like, just imagine being responsible for taking care of this iconic LA landmark! ๐Ÿ’ช At the same time, I'm worried about what'll happen if the new owner doesn't plan to preserve its history & design integrity ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. The fact that it's been sold 65 years ago by the original owners is already a big loss ๐Ÿ˜”... but I guess it's gotta be said that the Stahl family just can't keep up with their responsibilities anymore ๐Ÿ’•. Can you imagine if this house was like a museum piece, where people come to see & learn from its amazing design? ๐Ÿ›๏ธ That would be pretty cool, right?

I'm like totally torn about this ๐Ÿค”... I mean, $25m is straight-up crazy ๐Ÿ’ธ, but on the other hand, who wouldn't want to own a legendary mid-century modern home? It's like, the ultimate LA dream house ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŒด... But at the same time, I'm all about the preservation of history and architecture, so it's hard for me to even consider buying it myself ๐Ÿ˜ฌ... I mean, what if the new owner doesn't care about keeping it true to its original design? ๐Ÿค• It's like, this home is already a work of art, why mess with it? ๐Ÿ’ฏ

๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’ฅ I mean, who wouldn't want to own this iconic home? It's like living in a design museum! The fact that it's been the center of the Stahl family's lives for 65 years is really touching, and I can imagine how hard it must be for them to let go. $25m is still pretty steep, but if you're an architecture nerd or just love LA history, it might be worth it to own a piece of this mid-century modern masterpiece. The tour slots are all taken through February, which just adds to the excitement! I'd totally take a closer look and maybe even plan a visit to see if I'm crazy enough to make an offer ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿคฏ I just read that the iconic Stahl House in LA is up for sale for $25m! ๐Ÿ  It's like, this super famous mid-century modern home from 1960 that has been owned by the same family for 65 years. Can you even imagine living there? ๐Ÿ˜ The family wants someone who will love it just as much as they do, but also care enough to keep it in its original condition.

I'm a bit worried about what'll happen to it if it sells to someone who doesn't get its history or design vibes. ๐Ÿค” But at the same time, I'd love to see a young family or architecture enthusiast come along and make it their own while still respecting its legacy. ๐Ÿ’•

25m is crazy but it makes sense considering how iconic this house is ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean its been 65 years since they've owned it and they need the money lol, but you can tell they're gonna miss it too... I've seen pics of it online and it's literally a work of art ๐Ÿ˜. Whoever buys it gotta be super into design or architecture or something, 'cause preserving the character is key ๐Ÿ“š. I'm low-key hoping some young fam comes in and takes care of it instead of some rich collector who just wants to flip it for profit ๐Ÿ’ธ. Touring it online sounds like a tease tho, can't wait for pics of the interior ๐Ÿ“ธ

๐Ÿค” I'm kinda sad to see the Stahl House go up for sale... it's such an iconic part of LA's history ๐Ÿ โค๏ธ I mean, can you imagine anyone else owning that? ๐Ÿ˜‚ It's like buying a piece of design heaven (or at least, someone else's idea of it) ๐Ÿ˜‰ What do you guys think about this? Should they sell it to some rich collector who'll just lock it away or try to find someone who'll actually care for the place? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

$25m is way too much for this crazy old house ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, it's like buying a museum piece or something. The fact that the owners are selling because they can't care for it anymore just makes me wonder if they're getting some kind of sweet deal from the buyer. Like, who's behind the scenes making sure everything stays authentic?

The Stahl family's statement sounds super generic to me ๐Ÿค”. "We've had a hard time taking care of it" doesn't cut it as a reason for selling. There must be more to this story than what they're letting on.

OMG u guys!! ๐Ÿคฏ I'm literally FREAKING OUT about this news!!! The Stahl House is like, THE ultimate LA landmark! I mean, it's been featured in so many iconic movies and shows... can u even imagine owning that?! It's like having a piece of history right in your own backyard! ๐Ÿ’ฅ And the price?! $25m? Mind. Blown. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ But seriously, the Stahl family is selling and I'm literally worried about what'll happen to this masterpiece ๐Ÿค• They're looking for someone who understands its cultural significance... someone who'll preserve its character... like, please let it be a design collector or an architecture enthusiast or something! ๐Ÿ’– The thought of it falling into the wrong hands is giving me anxiety ๐Ÿ˜ฉ But at the same time, I'm SO stoked that this rare opportunity is out there for all us architecture enthusiasts ๐ŸŽ‰ Can u imagine being able to own a piece of LA history?! It's like, the ultimate dream come true! ๐Ÿ’ซ

๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’• I'm low-key freaking out over this! The Stahl House has been an iconic part of LA's skyline since 1960 ๐ŸŒ†, and now it's up for grabs for $25m ๐Ÿ’ธ. I think the Stahls are doing the right thing by looking for someone who'll appreciate its architectural significance ๐Ÿค” and preserve its character ๐Ÿ‘.

๐Ÿ“š As a design enthusiast, I'd love to see this home in person (sensing a possible tour soon?) ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ. It's crazy to think that Bruce and Shari Stahl have been caring for it for 65 years ๐Ÿ’ช. Can you imagine the stories they've got to tell? ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ’ญ Finding the right buyer is key, I agree with Adrian Scott Fine ๐Ÿ˜Š. Whoever buys this home has got a huge responsibility on their shoulders ๐Ÿ‘‘. Let's hope someone who loves mid-century modern as much as we do will come along and give it the TLC it deserves ๐Ÿ’–.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Can't wait to see how this plays out! ๐Ÿคž

๐Ÿค” This $25m asking price is totally fair imo ๐Ÿ’ธ. I mean think about it, this place has been around since 1960 and it's one of the most iconic homes in LA ๐ŸŒด. The fact that the Stahl family is looking for someone who will appreciate its architecture and cultural significance is a huge relief ๐Ÿ™. It's not just some random house being sold, it's an American masterpiece ๐Ÿ’ฅ. I'm actually kinda sad to see it go ๐Ÿค• but at the same time, it's exciting to think about who could be the next owner and what they'll do with it ๐Ÿ”ฎ. Plus, $25m is a small price to pay for something that's been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2013 ๐Ÿ’ฏ. It's all good imo ๐Ÿ‘Œ
