Anglo American drops plan to pay bosses millions in bonuses after $50bn Teck merger backlash

Anglo American has scrapped plans to offer its top executives substantial bonuses if a $50 billion mega-merger with Canadian miner Teck Resources goes through after investors raised concerns. The move comes as shareholders vote on the proposed deal, which would create a copper-producing giant and marks one of the largest mergers in the mining sector.

The plan had been designed to incentivize senior executives by offering them significant share bonuses worth millions of dollars if the merger was completed. However, Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) had previously recommended investors vote in favor of the deal but expressed concerns over the proposed variable incentives linked to transaction completion.

Instead, Anglo American has decided to engage further with investors on director pay before its annual general meeting next year. The company cited a need for "full alignment" between its pay structures and the success of the merger, as well as wanting to support the retention of senior management during a period of significant change.

The decision follows a backlash from several influential voices, including ISS, which deemed the high proposed payout "not considered good practice". Anglo American's shares have slipped 0.9% in early trading on Monday but remain up by more than 40% so far this year.

The mega-merger is seen as a multibillion-dollar bet on the global copper market, with copper playing a crucial role in low-carbon technologies such as solar farms and electric cars. The deal would make Anglo American one of the largest copper producers in the world if approved.

just got word that anglo american is scrapin their bonus plan for execs πŸ€”...think it's a good move, investors were gettin all salty about the variable incentives linked to completion πŸ’Έ. i mean, who needs millions of dollars tied to some merger deal anyway? it's all about alignment and retention, right? 🀝 plus, copper is lookin like the new oil, so maybe anglo american is just future proofin themselves 🌎. but seriously, let's see how this plays out, maybe they'll come back with a better plan πŸ€‘

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ’Έ when you try to give out millions in bonuses for doing the bare minimum, but then realize that's just not a good look πŸ˜… [gifs of people looking surprised and confused] πŸ‘€πŸ’°

I mean, who doesn't love a good game of corporate poker where the high-stakes players are the CEOs? πŸ€‘ They were gonna hand out some serious cash to their A-list execs just for completing this massive merger... and then ISS was all like "hold up, that's not cool". I guess you could say Anglo American is trying to be a good sport about it. πŸ’Ό They're going to have an extra chat with the investors before they vote on the deal, because who doesn't love a little more back-and-forth in the boardroom? πŸ€” Still, gotta wonder what's gonna happen next... will they get their bonuses or what? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

idk why they're being so stingy about bonuses lol... i get it tho, dont wanna alienate investors with super large payouts that might not perform well πŸ€”. but at the same time, its like, "ok we're gonna make a huge deal here and give out millions to the top execs" πŸ€‘. cant say ill be too mad about this decision, but i do think its a shame theyre putting all their eggs in one basket so to speak πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. what if the copper market tanks? πŸ“‰ then whats left for these shareholders? πŸ’Έ

omg I'm so down for this move by Anglo American πŸ™Œ they're keeping it real and avoiding those crazy bonuses that were like, hello just because you want to merge with Teck Resources doesn't mean you get a million-dollar reward πŸ’Έ I mean, ISS was right to call out the variable incentives as not good practice - transparency is key when it comes to pay structures. plus, it's all about supporting the senior management team during this huge change... fingers crossed they make the best decisions for the company 🀞

I'm kinda surprised that Anglo American scrapped plans for top exec bonuses πŸ€”... I mean, it's not like they're getting paid enough or anything, right? πŸ’Έ They gotta be super motivated to push through with this massive merger, especially with copper prices being so volatile lately ⛓️. Still, I think the move shows they're listening to investor concerns and wanting to get their directors' pay structure in line with the company's goals πŸ“Š... it's all about that "full alignment" thingy 🀝. Can't say I blame them for wanting to support senior management during this period of change, though - those execs have a lot riding on this deal πŸ’ͺ!

just wondering why bonuses need to be tied to a merger like this πŸ€”... seems counterintuitive that executives wouldn't want their hard work to pay off, but hey, guess some people just don't think that way 😐. anyway, hope it all works out for Anglo American and Teck Resources - copper's an important resource for the future πŸ’‘.

I'm kinda surprised they're giving up on that extra incentive for top brass πŸ€”... I mean, you gotta wonder what's more important - short-term profits or long-term stability? It seems like they prioritized "full alignment" over just handing out millions to happy employees 😊. And honestly, I think it's a good lesson in the importance of transparency and accountability in business. If top execs are just gonna get a blank check, who knows what kind of decisions they'll make? Transparency is key when it comes to leadership - if you're not willing to put your money where your mouth is, then maybe you shouldn't be leading the pack 🚫

omg this just doesn't add up at all πŸ€”. i mean anglo american is basically passing the buck on their plans for top exec bonuses instead of owning up to the fact that shareholders are pushing back πŸ’Έ. and now they're trying to rework director pay in a way that's gonna make them more accountable? sounds like a classic PR spin πŸ˜’. and honestly, i'm not sure why this is such a big deal either... copper prices have been all over the place lately πŸ“ˆ. but at the same time, it does feel kinda bad for those top execs who were counting on that sweet bonus cash πŸ’Έ. guess we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out in the end 🀞.

just heard about this huge merger between Anglo American and Teck Resources πŸ€‘ and i gotta say, it's kinda interesting that they're ditching the top exec bonuses πŸ€”. seems like a good move to me, gotta make sure everyone is on the same page before making any big changes πŸ’Ό. plus, it's not all about the benjamins - this merger could be a game changer for the copper industry, which is super crucial for those low-carbon techs that are all the rage 🌞. fingers crossed it gets approved and we see some major gains! 😊

I'm kinda surprised that ISS was all over this, but I guess it's good for transparency πŸ€”. I mean, bonuses are fine and all, but when they're tied to a massive merger, you gotta wonder what's really going on πŸ’Έ. Anglo American's being cautious and engaging with investors is probably the right move, though – you don't wanna alienate your shareholders entirely πŸ˜….

I've been following this deal closely (or at least trying to 🀣), and it seems like a solid bet for copper prices. But hey, the market's never predictable, so we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out ⏰. One thing's for sure – if this merger goes through, Anglo American's gonna be a major player in the industry πŸ”₯!

man I think this decision by Anglo American is kinda smart πŸ€” they're not gonna give their top execs a huge chunk of change just because it's a big deal, that was always a bit fishy tbh. but at the same time, it's also kinda disappointing that they didn't go through with it, I mean we all know how much money they're making now, and it's not like the merger isn't gonna be huge for the copper market 🌎

I think what really gets me is the whole "not considered good practice" thing from ISS, it's just a fancy way of saying that the payout was too rich πŸ€‘. but honestly, who knows? maybe this is all part of some larger plan to make sure the execs are more invested in the company's long-term success πŸ’Έ.

anyway, one thing's for sure: the copper market is gonna be big deals like this forever πŸ”₯

I'm not sure I get why they're changing their mind about these huge bonuses for top execs πŸ€”. Like, isn't the idea behind giving them a sweet share bonus to make them super motivated and want to see the merger through? But now it sounds like they're saying nope, we're gonna wait until everyone's happy with our pay plans before considering those big payouts πŸ’Έ.

I mean, I get that some people thought it was weird for execs to get so much just because of a deal πŸ€‘. And maybe they were right? But can't they just have a simple 'yes' or 'no' on this one? It's like trying to negotiate with your kids over bedtime – "Just give me an extra cookie, please?" 😜

Anyway, I'm curious to see how it all plays out. This merger thing seems important for the future of solar farms and electric cars πŸš€.

πŸ€” I think this is an interesting development. The fact that ISS raised concerns about variable incentives linked to transaction completion makes sense, considering how unpredictable mergers can be. It's not surprising that Anglo American decided to rework its plan - I mean, who wants to risk alienating investors just for the sake of a big bonus? 😐

From what I've seen, this move actually looks like a smart business decision. By engaging with investors on director pay, they're showing that they value transparency and accountability. Plus, it's always good to keep an open mind and be adaptable during times of change. πŸ’‘

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out in the long run. One thing for sure is that Anglo American wants to make sure its senior management team is aligned with the company's goals - and who can blame 'em? πŸ“ˆ

I was just reading about this new podcast everyone's been talking about πŸ“Ί... you know, the one where they explore weird food combinations? Like, have you ever tried peanut butter and pickles? Sounds crazy, right? But apparently it's a thing! Anyway, back to Anglo American and their merger plans. I guess it's kinda weird that they're going back on the bonuses idea. You'd think companies would just offer big payouts to get people excited about working hard, but I guess that's not always how it goes down πŸ’Έ. My friend's brother works in finance and he said something about 'good practice' being super important when it comes to executive pay... I don't know, maybe I'm just not following the news correctly πŸ€”.

πŸ€‘πŸ’Έ I feel like big companies should be more transparent about their plans for exec bonuses. It's pretty shady that they changed their minds mid-stream just 'cause investors had some concerns 😐. But at the same time, I get why they wanna make sure everyone is on the same page... it's a huge deal and copper is super important for our future 🌞. Still, if they're really concerned about aligning pay with success, maybe they should be more open about their numbers in the first place? πŸ’¬

just saw this news πŸ€‘... i dont get why they need to do that. bonuses should be tied to performance, not just cuz they want to keep their execs happy πŸ˜’. and 50 billion dollars? thats insane πŸ’Έ. copper is important but all these megamergers are just gonna make the prices drop and hurt small miners πŸ€•. its like anglo american wants to control everything... and whats with the lack of transparency? they cant just keep changing the rules mid game βš–οΈ. i think it would be cool if they came clean about their reasons and let investors decide for themselves πŸ’‘.
