Ardal O'Hanlon: 'I fell asleep on stage once – I could hear someone doing my material, got annoyed and woke up'

For a showman like Ardal O'Hanlon, comedy is often the last place to expect him to reveal his vulnerable side. On stage in Belfast, he fell asleep during one of his stand-up routines and woke up mid-sentence – only to realize he was still on stage and could hear someone else doing his jokes. 'I got annoyed,' he admits with a laugh.

This embarrassing incident is not an isolated event for O'Hanlon. He recalls attempting to sail across Lake Geneva as part of a comedy gig, with disastrous results. Another time, he tried to help the authorities catch a pair of sex offenders in prison who were more interested in causing chaos than facing justice – 'they didn't need me', he says wryly.

O'Hanlon's early days in comedy were filled with similar mishaps and misadventures. He once got into an argument with a fellow comedian, Phil Kay, over the best way to sail across Lake Geneva. A judge ultimately stepped in, putting an end to their absurd escapade.

One of O'Hanlon's greatest on-stage disasters was during his stint as Father Dougal in the cult hit 'Father Ted'. In one memorable episode, he wore a wobbly Elvis costume at a lookalike competition – but that's not the most cringeworthy story. Backstage at an Irish music festival, Van Morrison stormed into O'Hanlon's toilet and shouted at him to get out. 'He gave me this very friendly head-butt,' O'Hanlon recalls with amusement.

Despite his rough start in comedy, O'Hanlon has gone on to find success as a stand-up performer, actor, and writer. However, the roots of his showman persona are still rooted firmly in those early years of trying to make people laugh – no matter what it takes.

These days, O'Hanlon is known for more refined pursuits like hosting an Irish-language television program on TG4. When asked about exploring new horizons, he revealed a deep desire to visit Japan – but with one condition: 'I'd do Japan in Spanish with English subtitles.'

🤣 Ardal O'Hanlon's comedic misadventures are the stuff of legend! 😂 It's fascinating how his early experiences, though chaotic and cringe-worthy at times, ultimately shaped him into the charming showman we know today. His willingness to take risks and poke fun at himself is truly endearing.

I'm particularly intrigued by his foray into hosting an Irish-language television program – a testament to his adaptability and desire to explore new creative avenues. And who can blame him for wanting to visit Japan, albeit with a dash of humility? 🙏 It's refreshing to see someone in the entertainment industry being so down-to-earth and willing to poke fun at themselves.

O'Hanlon's comedic roots are still evident in his quick wit and ability to find humor in awkward situations. He's a true master of self-deprecation, always keeping us entertained with his unapologetic and irreverent sense of humor 😂.

Wow 🤣, can you imagine doing stand-up comedy in a foreign language with subs? That's some next-level weirdness. Interesting 👀, Ardal O'Hanlon's story is so relatable - who hasn't had a stage fail or two (or ten)? He's been through the ups and downs of comedy, but it seems like he's found his footing now. 😂

OMG u guyz, Ardal O'Hanlon is literally the most hilarious guy ever! 😂 i mean, who falls asleep on stage mid-sentence lolol and then realizes he's still performing? and sailing across Lake Geneva? that sounds like a total meme 🤣. but u know wut? he got some major guts 2 try stuff out there & fail & try again. like, even when things went wrong (he got into a fight with Phil Kay lol), he just laughed it off & kept goin' 💪. now he's all about hosting this cool Irish-language show & visiting Japan w/ subs in Spanish lol what a legend! 👏

lolol I gotta feel bad for Ardal O'Hanlon 😂... like, who falls asleep on stage mid-sentence?! 🤯 but seriously, that guy's got some crazy stories to share. I mean, sailing across Lake Geneva as part of a comedy gig? 🚣‍♂️ what was he thinking?! 😂 and trying to help catch sex offenders in prison? 🚔👮‍♂️ talk about taking it too far! 💥 but hey, at least he's learned from his mistakes and now hosts this Irish-language TV show. and Japan? 🇯🇵 lolol that's quite a condition... maybe he'll stick to acting out Elvis impressions instead 😄

I think Ardal O'Hanlon's hilarious mishaps are actually a sign of his incredible bravery and willingness to take risks. I mean, who else can get into an argument with Phil Kay over Lake Geneva and make it into a real-life comedy sketch? 🤣 Those early days were just a warm-up for the showman he is today.

And let's be real, trying to sail across Lake Geneva or crashing into a toilet at an Irish music festival takes more guts than most people can imagine. I think it's awesome that he's still embracing his goofy side and using it to make us laugh.

His new gig on TG4 might seem like a departure from comedy, but I say, why not? It just shows that O'Hanlon is always up for a challenge and willing to try something new. And Japan in Spanish with English subtitles sounds like the most epic adventure ever! 🇯🇵 Who needs perfection when you can have laughter and excitement? 😂

😊 So, Ardal O'Hanlon's comedy career has been full of laugh-out-loud moments, both on and off stage. I mean, who hasn't had those awkward moments where you're like "wait, what just happened?" 🤣 But seriously, it's impressive how he's managed to turn his mishaps into a part of his persona and even used them as material for his stand-up routines.

I think that's the beauty of comedy - it's all about finding the humor in unexpected places. And O'Hanlon's willingness to poke fun at himself and share those embarrassing stories is just refreshing. 💡 He's proven that you don't have to be taken seriously as a comedian to make people laugh, and that's what I think makes his career so fascinating.

It's also lovely to see him exploring new horizons now, like hosting an Irish-language TV program or planning a trip to Japan (with subtitles, haha). Who knows, maybe one day he'll even learn some Japanese phrases to get him started! 🌸

🤦‍♂️ ardal o'hanonl's comedy career is so relatable lol I've been there too where you just wanna shut up and pretend the audience didn't hear that bad joke 🤣 but at the same time its good to see he's owning it and making light of those awkward moments 🙌

I don’t usually comment but I feel bad for the guy 🤷‍♂️. It’s like he’s saying all these crazy stories and then you think he’s just joking around, but really it sounds like some messed up stuff went down 😳. Like that one time he tried to help catch sex offenders in prison? 🚫 That doesn’t sound like something you just do on a whim... Anyway, I guess that’s the thing about being a comedian, right? You gotta take risks and put yourself out there even if it means looking like an idiot in front of 100 people 💥. And hey, at least he can laugh at himself now 😂.

omg what's up with this guy ardal o hanlon 😂 i mean comedy is hard enough as it is but trying to sail across lake geneva and getting into fights with other comedians? 🤣 that sounds like a recipe for disaster! i can imagine how embarrassing those experiences must have been. i love how he just laughs about them now though, it's really cool. and japan in spanish with english subtitles? lol that's genius. 🤪

man I feel bad for ardal o'hannahlon 🤣 like he's trying so hard to be funny and sometimes it just doesn't go right. you can tell he's still got that goofy energy from his early days in comedy but now he's got more going on 💡, hosting this irish-language show and all. gotta admire the man for just rolling with these crazy stories 🙅‍♂️ and not letting them define him. plus, who wouldn't want to visit japan? 🌸👀
