Arsenal climbed to the top of the Champions League table with a deserved 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich, as Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli struck the winner in the 88th minute to cap off an absorbing encounter at the Emirates.
The match had all the makings of a classic contest between two European powerhouses, and it lived up to that billing for much of the evening. Lennart Karl's stunning solo effort from Bayern's opening corner gave Jurrien Timber the lead, but Arsenal responded well to take control of the game.
Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi started to dominate midfield, forcing Bayern back into their own half, and a loose pass from Harry Kane created an Arsenal chance that was headed wide by Josip Stanisic. The visitors continued to push for an equaliser after Trossard hobbled off injured before the break, but it was not until Joshua Kimmich's raking ball found Serge Gnabry that Bayern finally scored again.
The young German struck with his first touch, beating Lewis-Skelly out of position to give Bayern a 2-0 lead just before halftime. However, the Gunners responded strongly in the second half and were level at 1-1 when Martinelli replaced Bukayo Saka for Arsenal's substitutions. Martinelli then set up substitute Noni Madueke for the equaliser.
The breakthrough came from Calafiori's excellent cross that found Madueke tapping home for his first goal, sending the Emirates into raptures and securing a vital win for Mikel Arteta's side to propel them top of Group E.
