Bears' Grades: A Dominant Performance Sends Shockwaves Through Philly
The Chicago Bears have pulled off an upset of epic proportions, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 24-15 on the road. And what a performance it was, with several key players standing out for their individual excellence.
At quarterback, Caleb Williams showed flashes of brilliance but ultimately struggled to find consistency. Despite having some standout moments, such as a beautiful touchdown connection with tight end Cole Kmet and a fourth-down completion that kept the Bears' drive alive, he finished with a mediocre 56.9 passer rating, completing fewer than 50% of his throws.
However, it was clear that Williams wasn't the only reason for the Bears' success. Running backs D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai took center stage, both rushing for over 100 yards and scoring touchdowns in the process. Their dominant performance earned them an A-Plus grade from this writer, with Swift running for 125 yards on 6.9 per carry and Monangai adding another 130 yards with a score.
The offensive line, too, shone brightly, particularly on the right side of the line where tackle Darnell Wright and guard Jonah Jackson made some crucial blocks to open up holes for the Bears' backs. Center Drew Dalman and left guard Joe Thuney looked like seasoned veterans, while rookie left tackle Ozzy Trapilo held his own.
Defensively, the Bears showed signs of life, particularly in the secondary where safety Kevin Byard III picked off a pass that had seemed destined for A.J. Brown's hands, courtesy of some sticky coverage from cornerback Kyler Gordon. Nahshon Wright also made a key play, ripping the ball out of Jalen Hurts' hands to give his team a turnover.
But perhaps the biggest surprise was the play-calling by head coach Ben Johnson, who seems to be getting it right from day one. The way he adapted his game plan to exploit the Eagles' weaknesses and keep them guessing will be crucial in determining whether or not this young team can make a deep playoff run.
All in all, it's been a dominant performance for the Bears, one that sets up their next opponent with a real challenge on their hands. Can they keep it going? Only time will tell.
