Beautiful Little Fool review – F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald musical needs jazzing up

A new attempt to revive the tragic tale of F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald on stage has arrived in London, but unfortunately, it falls short of expectations. Hannah Corneau's poppy score and Michael Greif's direction fail to capture the essence of the iconic couple's tumultuous marriage.

The musical follows the life of their daughter Scottie as she delves into her parents' archive, offering a glimpse into their infamous rise and fall in the Jazz Age. While Lauren Ward shines in her performance as a young Zelda, the show's narrative is marred by a lack of depth and exploration. The framing device of Scottie's search for answers raises questions that are left unaddressed.

The cast delivers strong vocals, particularly David Hunter as F Scott Fitzgerald, but the lyrics often feel shallow and repetitive. The musical's attempts to convey Zelda's emotions come across as forced and melodramatic. The stage adaptation lacks a nuanced understanding of the couple's complex relationship, focusing instead on a simplistic portrayal of their love-hate dynamic.

The show skirts around more serious topics, such as Zelda's mental health struggles, in favor of a more dramatic conclusion that prioritizes the feminist narrative over historical accuracy. Despite this, fans of the Fitzgeralds will find some nostalgic moments, particularly in the tender scenes between F Scott and Zelda during their Alabama meeting.

While there may be some hope for future adaptations, Beautiful Little Fool feels like a missed opportunity to truly capture the essence of this fascinating couple's story.

I was really looking forward to this musical, but unfortunately it fell flat 😐. I think the biggest issue is that it tries to cram too much into the narrative and ends up skimping on the details 🤔. The cast is talented, don't get me wrong, but the writing felt shallow and forced at times 💭. I also feel like they missed an opportunity to really explore Zelda's mental health struggles - those are some heavy topics that deserve more attention 🚫.

I do love a good nostalgia trip, especially when it comes to old-school Hollywood glamour 😎, but in this case, the Alabama scenes were the highlight for me 👀. It was clear that Lauren Ward brought her A-game as Zelda, though! Maybe with some tweaks and more focus on the storytelling, we could've had something special 🤞.

omg u no i went 2 see dis musical n it was meh 🤔 i mean lauren ward as zelda was on point but da rest of it felt kinda...flat idk i felt like dey were tryin 2 fit too much inti one show n it ended up feelin a lil rushed also david hunter as scott was ok but his lyrics at times felt a lil forced 🎵 n whats w/ da lack of depth in da story? dey skipped over so many important tings like zelda's mental health struggles which is kinda weird considering dat's a big part of her life lol 😕

🤔 I mean, I was kinda hoping they'd do better with the musical, you know? I loved F Scott and Zelda's story, but I guess it's just hard to capture that magic on stage 🎭. The cast did seem pretty talented, especially Lauren Ward as young Zelda 💖, but yeah, the narrative just felt a bit flat for me. And David Hunter as Scott was alright, I s'pose 😐. Maybe they'll try again in the future and really nail it? 🤞

🤔 I gotta disagree with this review... or should I say, they're off by a mile 😅. I mean, come on, "falling short of expectations" is way too harsh, especially considering the complex task of bringing F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald's tumultuous marriage to life on stage. It's not like anyone expected a straightforward, feel-good musical 🎵. Beautiful Little Fool might not be perfect, but it's still a bold attempt to explore the Jazz Age and its iconic couple, even if it doesn't quite hit the mark... yet 🕰️.

I'm all for nuance when it comes to storytelling, but sometimes less is more 💡. I think this musical tries too hard to include every aspect of their lives, resulting in a disjointed narrative. And don't get me wrong, I love Lauren Ward's performance as Zelda 👸, but the other characters feel like cardboard cutouts 📦.

I do agree that the show skirts around serious topics, but maybe that's a deliberate choice by the creators to focus on the more romantic aspects of their story? It's not my cup of tea either, but I'm willing to give it another chance... with some tweaks and refinements 💫.

I was really looking forward to seeing this musical adaptation of the Fitzgeralds' life on stage but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to my expectations 🤔. I think what disappointed me most was that it failed to delve deeper into the complexities of their relationship and Zelda's mental health struggles, instead opting for a more superficial exploration of their love-hate dynamic 💔. The show did have some lovely moments, particularly in the tender scenes between F Scott and Zelda, but overall it felt like a missed opportunity to truly capture the essence of this fascinating couple's story 🎭. Maybe future adaptations will fare better in tackling these heavier themes? 🤞

Wow 🤔💔 Beautiful Little Fool just didn't do it for me, you know? I mean, I loved Zelda and Scottie in real life, but the show felt so... surface level. They're such a tragic love story, and I feel like they deserved better than this shallow musical. The cast was great, don't get me wrong 🙌, but the script just didn't capture the complexity of their relationship. And what's up with glossing over Zelda's mental health issues? That's so not in line with her actual story 🤷‍♀️.

Interesting 👀 how they prioritized the feminist narrative over historical accuracy, though. It's like they took some aspects of their story and made them into a simplified, feel-good tale. I just don't think it did justice to the real couple 💔.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Beautiful Little Fool was an okay effort, but it fell short of being truly amazing 😐.

ugh I was so hyped for this musical but it sounds like it fell flat 🤕. I love Scottie and Zelda's story so much, but it feels like they just skimmed over all the important stuff. like mental health is such a huge part of their story and to gloss over it like that is just not right 😔. and don't even get me started on how they handled their relationship... it felt like they were trying too hard to make it all sappy and romantic, when really it was so much more complicated 🙄. I mean, I loved Lauren Ward as Zelda, but she deserved better than a shallow script 👎. maybe next time they'll get it right though 💕

😐 I'm so disappointed with this musical, you know? They took these two literary legends, F Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald, and just... watered them down 🤕. It's like they were trying to make a quick buck off their iconic status rather than actually digging deep into their complex relationship 💔.

And don't even get me started on the music 🎵! Poppy score? More like forgettable ditty 🙄. And Michael Greif's direction? So predictable 📚. It feels like they took every cliché from the Jazz Age and mashed them all together into a mess 🕺.

Lauren Ward as Zelda is literally the only redeeming quality of this show, but even she can't save it from its overall lack of depth 👀. And what's with the framing device? It's just so... convenient 🙄. They could've explored so much more of their story, but noooo, they had to simplify everything down to a shallow love-hate dynamic 💔.

It's like they're trying to appeal to every Tom, Dick, and Harry who thinks the Jazz Age is 'fashionable' 👗. Newsflash: it's not just about the clothes, folks! It's about the complexity, the nuance, the actual human experience 🤯. And Beautiful Little Fool fails on all fronts 😔.

Ugh I just saw this show 3 days ago 🤦‍♀️ it was so hyped but honestly i was kinda meh about it the music was cute but not really my thing idk what they were going for with zelda's character she was like a caricature of herself lol david hunter as scott fitzgerald was decent tho 👏 but yeah the whole thing just felt kinda flat and shallow

I don't know how I feel about this new stage adaptation of the Fitzgeralds' story 🤔. On one hand, Lauren Ward's performance as Zelda is pretty great and it's awesome that they're highlighting her struggles with mental health 🙌. But on the other hand, I think they missed out on so many interesting angles to explore - like how Zelda's mental health issues actually affected their marriage 💔. And instead of getting into all the complexities of their relationship, the show just glosses over it and gives us a super simplistic love-hate dynamic 🤷‍♀️. It's like they were trying to fit too many things into this little framing device where Scottie's searching for answers 📚. I guess fans of the Fitzgeralts will still enjoy some nostalgic moments, but overall, I just feel like it's a pretty shallow adaptation 🎭.
