Murder Charges Erupt in NYC's Bronx as Record Homicide Streak Comes to an End
A deadly dispute at a public housing complex in the Bronx has sent shockwaves through the city, shattering a remarkable 12-day streak without a homicide. The victim, 38-year-old Gregory Stewart, was gunned down outside the Sotomayor Houses on Watson Avenue in Soundview around 9 p.m. Sunday.
According to authorities, Sean Grant, 28, of the same building, is now facing multiple charges in connection with the killing. Police found Grant carrying a loaded 9mm pistol in his pants just two blocks away from the crime scene, within minutes of the shooting.
Grant, who lives in the building where the violence occurred, had previously been involved in a dispute related to a shooting earlier this month. However, officials are still investigating the motive behind the fatal altercation.
The victim, Stewart, was more than 4 miles away in Wakefield at the time of his death. The NYPD has stated that the killing marked the end of a record-breaking streak without homicides in New York City.
The incident raises concerns about gun violence in the city. According to data from the 43rd Precinct, shootings were up 39% this year through December 7 compared to the same period last year. While there were only 12 homicides in the precinct by that date this year, it matched the amount at the same point last year.
Meanwhile, citywide, shootings and homicides have declined significantly since last year, with a record-low number of shooting incidents and victims reported so far this year.
