By the end of January, over 80% of Philly's libraries will be open on Saturdays

Philadelphia's Libraries to Extend Weekend Hours: Over 80% Set to Open on Saturdays by January 24th.

The Free Library of Philadelphia is set to extend its weekend hours, with more than 80% of branches scheduled to open on Saturdays by the end of January. As of December 20, the Paschalville Library will join the Bushrod Library in offering Saturday hours, while the Wyoming Library will start up on January 24th.

This move comes as part of a broader effort to increase accessibility and provide additional resources for the community. According to Kelly Richards, president and director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, "We are proud to continue serving our communities... By continuing to open additional libraries on Saturdays for public service, we look forward to providing the support and resources our neighbors rely on."

Originally, the library had planned to reopen all 54 branches by the end of the year, following funding in Mayor Cherelle Parker's 2025 budget. However, no timeline has been provided for the remaining branches.

The decision marks a return to Saturday hours for the library system, which was first discontinued in 2018 due to budget cuts. The move is expected to provide additional support and resources for students, families, and job seekers.

A strategic plan for the future of the library's operations will be released in February following a public survey and series of town halls held this summer.

OMG u guys 🀯 I'm so down about this πŸ™Œ they're finally reopening all the libraries on Saturdays again!!! I mean I used to have to take my kids to the library on Sundays just to get some quiet time while they did their homework lol πŸ˜‚ but now we can actually spend the whole day there and I can meet up with friends too πŸ‘« it's like the city is saying "Hey, we care about u" πŸ€— can't wait for that strategic plan to come out in Feb πŸ“šπŸ’‘

That's awesome news 🀩! I'm so stoked about the Free Library of Philly extending its weekend hours 😊. It's all about making education and resources more accessible to the community, you know? πŸ‘ 80% of branches opening on Saturdays is a huge deal - it's like, finally back to normal after that 2018 budget cut debacle πŸ€•. I'm loving the fact that they're prioritizing students, families, and job seekers who need that extra support. Can't wait to see what the strategic plan has in store for the future πŸ’‘. It's all about community first, you feel me? 🌎

man, more libraries opening on saturdays? i mean, good on them, but are they gonna start serving coffee and pastries or something? πŸ€” gotta think about the costs here... might just end up being another bunch of overhead expenses for taxpayers. and what's with the "strategic plan" thingy? sounds like some corporate jargon to me... just make sure they're providing decent books and resources, not overhyped tech gadgets or whatever...

πŸ€” just think about it, 80% of their libraries opening on saturdays is actually pretty cool, like they're making an effort to make themselves more accessible to people who can't always make it during the week. i'm down for that πŸ’― but at the same time, it's still weird that it took them this long to get back to saturday hours after budget cuts messed everything up in 2018 πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ and what about those other branches? when are they gonna open again? ⏰ also, i hope the plan they're working on is more than just 'oh we'll figure it out later'... a strategic plan that actually works should be out soon πŸ’‘

omg i'm so stoked about this 🀩 they're finally bringing back saturday hours at philly libraries πŸ“š i remember when they stopped doing that cuz of budget cuts in 2018 πŸ˜” it's been super inconvenient for students and families who wanna use the library on weekends πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ i wish all branches could be open on saturdays by january 24th, it's like over 80% already πŸŽ‰ what's the deal with the remaining branches tho? will they get their funding from mayor parker's budget or wut? πŸ€‘ and btw, more libraries = more resources for community members πŸ‘

Saturday library vibes are back! I'm loving that Philly's libraries are bringing back weekend hours - it's gonna be a game changer for students, families, and anyone looking to score some free resources πŸ“šπŸ‘. The fact that over 80% of branches will be open on Saturdays by January 24th is huge, and I'm all about the Paschalville Library joining the party ASAP πŸŽ‰. Can't wait to see what other awesome initiatives come out of this strategic plan in February - maybe we'll even get some virtual library hours thrown in for good measure 🀞!

omg i'm so hyped about philly libraries extending their hours 🀩! its amazing that they're making Saturdays accessible to more ppl, esp students & families who need those resources lol idk how many ppl have been struggling cuz the old schedule was kinda limiting πŸ€” anyway cant wait 2 c how this plan unfolds & see what other changes come from it πŸ’ͺ

I'm so stoked about this! I mean, think about it, Saturday hours at the library is like the ultimate lifeline for parents trying to balance work and family life 🀯. It's gonna make a huge difference for all the families in Philly who are struggling to get access to resources on weekends. My daughter was always stressing out 'cause she had to do her homework before going to the park, but now she'll be able to finish it at the library while I'm waiting there with her πŸ“šπŸ’». It's amazing how these small changes can add up and make such a big impact on people's lives πŸ’•. Fingers crossed that all the branches are open by January 24th so I can plan my weekend around it 🀞!

I think it's awesome that Philly libraries are getting back into Saturday hours 🀩! I mean, 80% is pretty impressive, especially since they were down since 2018. It's about time more people had access to those resources, you know? Students and job seekers could really use the extra help, and families can benefit from all that stuff too. Plus, it's just more convenient for everyone πŸ“šπŸ’». The fact that they're doing a public survey and town halls to figure out their future plan is pretty cool too - I hope they get some awesome ideas out of it πŸ’‘!

omg I'm so down for more weekend hours at Philly libraries πŸ“šπŸ•°οΈ! it's about time they bring back Saturdays, was always a fave spot to study & hang out with friends. hope they keep those extended hours consistent, would love to see the Paschalville one become a regular thing too 😊

Saturdays at the library? What's next? They're gonna open on Sundays too 🀣. But seriously, it's about time! I remember when my kids were young and we'd have to plan our whole day around the library's hours... or not even be able to go because they only had weekday hours. Now this is a great move for all the families out there who want some quiet time with their little ones or just need access to resources during the week. I'm all for it!

I'm so stoked that Philly libraries are bringing back Saturday hours πŸ€©πŸ“š! It's about time we had more access to those amazing resources, especially for students and families. I mean, who doesn't love having a quiet spot to study or catch up on some reading on a weekend? The fact that they're doing this as part of their community outreach is really cool too - it shows they care about the people they serve.

Now, I know some might be thinking, "But what about the funding?" And yeah, it's always a concern. But from what I've seen, they're trying to make sure these new Saturday hours are sustainable in the long run. Plus, with the strategic plan coming out soon, we should get more info on how they're planning to make this work.

Overall, I think this is a win for the community - and for anyone who loves libraries as much as I do 😊!

omg i need more time to study πŸ˜… so having libraries open on saturdays is like the best thing ever! i was thinking if they have computers there why not offer free wifi for anyone who wants it? thats like 10 bucks a month or something πŸ€‘. also, dont they have e-books and stuff online already? why do people still need to go to the library? πŸ’» anyway, yay more libraries on saturdays! πŸŽ‰

I'm low-key stoked about Philly's libraries extending their weekend hours πŸ™Œ! It's awesome that over 80% of branches are gonna open on Saturdays by January 24th, so I can grab my fave book without having to rush back from a Saturday brunch πŸ˜‚. The fact that they're doing this to provide more resources for students, families, and job seekers is really cool too - it's all about the community, right? 🌈 The president of the library system said they're proud to serve the community, and I'm pretty sure we should all be proud of them too! πŸ’―

I'm so stoked about this new development 🀩! More libraries opening on Saturdays means more opportunities for people to get educated, learn a new skill or just chill out with some books πŸ“š. It's like, totally awesome that the Free Library of Philly is making this change to serve its community better ❀️. I'm curious to see how it'll all play out and what kinda impact it'll have on students and families πŸ‘€.

OMG πŸ€”, I'm like so stoked about this news! Our city libraries finally opening on Saturdays? That's like, totally awesome! 😎 I mean, who doesn't love having access to books and resources on the weekends, right? Plus, it's a great way for students and families to get some studying done or just chill out with some reading. And can you imagine how cool it is that they're getting all 54 branches open again? That's like, almost every corner of the city covered! πŸ“š

I'm also curious about this whole public survey thingy... what do they mean by "strategic plan for the future"? Are they gonna make some changes to the library hours or something? I hope not, but at the same time, I want them to make sure everything is working out and serving the community well. Can't wait to see how it all plays out! 🀞

I'm so stoked about this 🀩! More libraries on Saturdays is like, super convenient for people with non-traditional schedules, you know? Like students who want to study on weekends or families who need help with homework/errands. I remember when my little cousin was in elementary school and had to stay home from school because they didn't have internet at their library... it's crazy how much that impacted their life! 😩

And I love that the Free Library of Philly is making a comeback on Saturdays! It's like, totally about community service now 🌟. They're planning those town halls and public surveys to make sure everyone's got a say in what's happening. That's really cool, you know? Not just throwing money at it without thinking how people might be affected... that's the kind of stuff I want to see more of 😊.

I'm curious though, who's gonna oversee this whole strategic plan thingy? Are they gonna involve the community more in the decision-making process? Fingers crossed! 🀞

πŸ€” I'm all for extending weekend hours at libraries but 80% of branches opening on Saturdays by Jan 24th seems like a pretty tight squeeze. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that they're making a effort to increase accessibility, but I hope the Paschalville Library is up for the task πŸ˜…. And what about those last 14 branches? Are they gonna be okay? Shouldn't we know what the plan is for them by now? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Also, isn't it weird that the strategic plan comes out in Feb after a summer of town halls? Feels like they're just trying to meet a deadline rather than actually listening to the community's feedback πŸ™„.

I'm so hyped about this 🀩! More libraries on Saturdays means more access to info and resources for people who need 'em most! I mean, think about it, students studying for exams or working on projects can finally get some help at the library without having to take a day off from work. And families with little ones can now spend quality time together without worrying about finding childcare. It's all about being inclusive and making life easier for everyone πŸ™Œ. I'm so glad the library is giving back to the community in this way. Can't wait to see what other changes they have planned! πŸ’‘
