California’s Gavin Newsom slams Trump absence at COP30 climate conference

California Governor Gavin Newsom delivered a scathing rebuke to President Donald Trump's absence at COP30, labeling it an "abdication of duty" and saying that the US had created an opening for China to exert greater influence on the global stage.

Newsom made his remarks during a panel discussion at the climate conference in Belem, Brazil, where he cited Republican leaders from California, including Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon, who spearheaded efforts to reduce water and air pollution. He also highlighted California's role as an innovator in clean energy initiatives.

The move comes ahead of Newsom's potential presidential bid in 2028. When asked about the possibility of running for president, he declined to take the bait, instead focusing on his call to action for world leaders to adopt a unifying approach when addressing climate change and scepticism towards it.

Newsom criticized Trump's climate policies, saying that they were based on "stupid people" who have cost their countries fortunes. He also expressed outrage over Trump's military campaign against maritime vessels alleged to be drug-smuggling boats, calling for due process and the rule of law to prevail.

In a further jab at Trump, Newsom questioned why news of his administration's proposal to allow offshore drilling along the California coastline broke during COP30, suggesting that it was an attempt to draw attention away from the conference.

OMG 🤯 I'm so hyped about Gavin Newsom speaking out against Trump's lack of action on climate change! Like, what is going on in that dude's head? 🤷‍♂️ We need more leaders like Newsom who actually care about the planet. And can we talk about how low-key snarky he was when dissing Trump? "Stupid people" is EVERYTHING 😂. I'm living for this, btw - 2028 can't come soon enough! 🚀 This is the kind of leadership we need right now. Newsom's all about clean energy and innovation - that's the kinda vibe I'm here for 💚

I gotta say, I'm loving this drama between Newsom and Trump 🤯! California's always been a bit of a rebel, but now they're calling out the big guy? 😏 It's like they're trying to one-up him on climate change, which is actually kinda awesome. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good jab at Trump's expense? I mean, "stupid people" is low, but I'm here for it 🤣. Newsom's right though, we do need world leaders to take this seriously and stop playing politics on the environment. Maybe he's trying to position himself as that leader in 2028? Either way, I'm stoked to see some real talk about climate change – it's about time! 💚

I gotta say, I'm totally on board with Gavin Newsom calling out President Trump for abandoning climate talks 🤦‍♂️💔, but at the same time, I think he's being a bit too harsh and divisive about it 😒. I mean, Trump did mention climate change in his State of the Union address, so what's the big deal? 🤷‍♂️ And those Republican leaders from California who helped reduce pollution? Not even mentioned by Newsom? That seems like a major oversight to me 🚫. Plus, why is Newsom so quick to bring up Trump's military actions? Shouldn't we be focusing on finding solutions instead of tearing each other down? 🌎💪 And what's with the jab about offshore drilling? Just trying to distract us from the real issues, right? 🤔

🤦‍♂️ Trump's absence at COP30 is like, super suspicious, you know? He just kinda shows up and expects everyone else to do all the heavy lifting on climate change 🌎🔥 while he's off making a mess elsewhere... I mean, come on, Gavin's right, it's an abdication of duty. What's up with that? And btw, who needs offshore drilling when you've got wind and solar energy at your fingertips? 🌳💨 California's been leading the charge on clean energy for years, let's see some real action from the rest of the world 🤞

🤔 The US has got to step up its game when it comes to climate change. Gavin Newsom is right, Trump's absence at COP30 is a huge letdown 🚫. I mean, what's the point of even having these conferences if no one's gonna show up? 🤷‍♂️ It's like they're just setting a bad example for everyone else. And yeah, it's a bit rich that they're talking about China exerting influence when they're the ones who are supposed to be leading on this stuff. 🤦‍♂️ I'm not sure what Trump's thinking, but it seems like he's got his priorities all wrong 🤑.

😒🌎 I'm like, totally disappointed in President Trump not showing up to COP30 🤦‍♂️. I mean, climate change is like, a super big deal right now and we need world leaders coming together to figure out our problems 💡. Newsom's comments about Trump's absence being an "abdication of duty" kinda hit the nail on the head 🚧. It's like, if we want to address this crisis, we can't just sit back and let other countries take over 🌟. We need US leaders to be leading by example and showing some real commitment to change 💪. I'm all for California being a leader in clean energy initiatives – that's something we should be proud of! 🌱

I dont get why Newsoms so upset about Trump not showing up to COP30 🤷‍♂️ like whats the big deal? cant we all just talk about climate change and stuff? I mean Ive heard of some US presidents being kinda shady before, but this one takes it to a whole new level 🚫. And btw, why did they have to announce that offshore drilling plan at COP30 tho? It sounds like Trumps trying to distract us from the real issue 😒

😔 I can feel the frustration and disappointment coming from Gavin Newsom's words... it's like he's carrying a weight on his shoulders 🌎💔. Trump's absence at COP30 is not just about politics, it's about the future of our planet 🌟. It's heartbreaking to see world leaders taking a step back when we need them most 🤕. Newsom's criticism hits close to home, especially for California and its role in clean energy initiatives 💚. As someone who cares deeply about climate change, it's hard not to feel outraged too 😠. But at the same time, I want to believe that there are leaders like Gavin Newsom out there who genuinely care about making a difference ❤️. Let's keep hoping for a better future 🌈💪

lol what is going on with trump?? 🤯 he just skips cop30 like its nobodies business and now ca gov gavin newsom is calling him out big time! Newsom's all about climate change and clean energy, btw i'm loving cali's innovation scene right now 💚. And can we talk about how much of a shame it is that trump's climate policies are literally based on "stupid people" who just cost their countries $$$?! 🤦‍♂️ i mean, what's the point of being president if u r just gonna make bad decisions? anywayz back to Newsom, he's all about unity and calling out trump's bs, maybe he should throw his hat in the ring for 2028? 🤔 wouldn't that be something 😅.

🤦‍♂️ Can you believe Trump skipped COP30? 🚫 That's like, a huge deal for climate change! 🌎 Did you know that 2022 saw the highest number of natural disasters on record, with over 1300 extreme weather events worldwide? 📊 The US is responsible for around 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and now Trump's out? 🚫 This is like an abdication of duty! 🤦‍♂️

Meanwhile, California has been a leader in clean energy, with over 60% of its electricity coming from renewable sources. 🌞 Did you know that the state has set a goal to reach 100% carbon neutrality by 2045? ⏰ The US is also home to some of the world's most innovative companies in the field of climate tech! 🚀

It's interesting to note that the top 10 countries responsible for greenhouse gas emissions since 1990 are: China (25%), USA (15%), India (7%), Russia (5%), Japan (4%), Germany (3%), South Korea (2%), Iran (1.8%), Canada (1.6%), and Saudi Arabia (1.5%). 📈 What's Trump's plan to tackle climate change, eh? 🤔

🤔 come on man, what's the point of even having world leaders if they're just gonna ignore major issues like climate change? Newsom's right though, Trump's "climate policies" are laughable and only benefit the rich corporations that don't care about the future 🌎💸. And btw, why is it always the US trying to take control on everything? Can't we all just get along and work together for once? 🤷‍♂️ The fact that Trump's admin is trying to drill off the Cali coastline right now while COP30 is going on is just a huge middle finger to the environment 🚫🌊

🤦‍♀️ I'm so done with leaders like Trump who think the world is their personal playground 🌎. Newsom is right on point when he says we need a unified approach to tackling climate change - it's not just about politics, it's about our planet's future 🌟. And can we talk about how Trump's actions are basically undermining the very reason we're having COP30 in the first place? 🙄 Let's focus on innovation and progress, not petty power struggles 💡. As a parent, I'm worried about what kind of world my kids will inherit if we don't take action now 😬. We need leaders like Newsom who are willing to call out the status quo and push for real change 🔥.

🤯 come on, dude! Trump's absence at COP30 is like, a total fail 🚫. Newsom is right, we need world leaders to put aside their differences and focus on saving the planet 🌎. It's not about politics or who's got the most followers, it's about saving our future for real ❤️. And btw, what's with all the drama around offshore drilling? Can't we just have a conversation about how to make clean energy work for everyone? 🤔

Wow 💥, I think it's so cool how Gavin Newsom is speaking up for climate action and holding leaders like Trump accountable 🤝! Interesting that he mentioned Reagan and Nixon, who were actually ahead of their time with pollution reduction efforts 🌎. I wish more world leaders would take a united stance on this issue, it's so urgent 🚨💦.

trump's climate policies are like a big fat joke 🤦‍♂️ california is doing all the heavy lifting on clean energy and water pollution while trump is over here playing catch-up and making excuses for his own failures 💪 at least we have leaders like newsom who actually care about the future of our planet 🌎

🤔🌎 so i think newsom is spot on about trump's absense @ cop30 🚫 it's like he's not taking climate change seriously at all 👀 and his military campaign against smuggling boats just seems like a waste of resources 💸 meanwhile, california is still leading the way in clean energy innovations 🌞🔋 and we should be supporting leaders who actually care about our planet 🌿👍 newsom's comments were refreshing, especially since he didn't take the bait when asked about running for president 🤷‍♂️ now let's focus on taking action to address climate change 🚀💪

🤔 It's interesting how Gavin Newsom is using this opportunity to position himself as a leader on climate change issues. His critique of Trump's approach is spot on - it's hard to see how policies based on misinformation and short-sighted thinking can help address such a pressing global issue.

Newsom's nod to California's past leaders, like Reagan and Nixon, who actually made some progress on environmental issues, shows that he's not just relying on nostalgia. The fact that he's highlighting his state's role in clean energy initiatives is also significant - it's a key area where the US can demonstrate its commitment to sustainability.

I'm also impressed by Newsom's focus on a unifying approach to addressing climate change. It's not about picking a side or scoring points off opponents, but rather finding common ground and working together to address this existential threat. If he runs for president in 2028, I think his message of pragmatic leadership will resonate with many voters 🌎

🚨😷 I'm low-key worried about the future, man. If Trump's absence at COP30 is an abdication of duty, what does that say about his commitment to climate change? 🌡️ We need world leaders working together to address this issue, not just making empty statements. The US has a huge role to play in reducing emissions and promoting clean energy... but Trump's policies seem like they're moving us in the opposite direction. 💸 It's crazy that Newsom is calling out our own president for his climate inaction. Can't we just have one leader who cares about saving the planet? 🌎😔

🌎😬 I'm shocked by Newsom's scathing rebuke to Trump... like what's going on in the US? 🤔 The fact that they're having this conversation at a climate confab is just wild. It feels like they should be working together, not at each other's throats. And can we talk about how Trump's absence was kinda expected? I mean, his track record on the environment isn't exactly stellar 😬. California is trying to lead the way on clean energy and the US government's supposed to be supporting them... but instead they're over here being all "let's go drill more" 🌊. It's like, what are we even doing? 🤷‍♀️
