Chatsworth Estate's New Family-Friendly Hotel Opens to the Public
As we drove up the winding road to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, the stunning limestone edifice came into view, set against a backdrop of rolling hills and autumnal colors. This grand estate has been carefully crafted over centuries by successive generations of the Cavendish family, who have lived here for over 450 years.
One of the most significant transformations was made by the 6th Duke of Devonshire in the 19th century, when he demolished the village and rebuilt it on a hill overlooking the house. His perfectionism paid off, as Chatsworth has become one of the UK's most popular stately homes, welcoming over 600,000 visitors each year.
The estate now offers its latest addition - The Hide hotel - an affordable, family-friendly alternative to other accommodation options in the Chatsworth Escapes portfolio. With doubles from Β£80 a night and bunk rooms sleeping two adults and two children from Β£125 (room-only), this is a great option for families looking for comfort without breaking the bank.
Our stay at The Hide began with dinner at the Hide Grill and Pizzeria, where we enjoyed a "campfire-inspired menu designed for sharing" cooked over an open flame. We also discovered a dedicated play corner with books, toys, and a miniature kitchen to keep younger diners entertained while they wait for their food.
While we dined, our guide Martin regaled us with fascinating facts about the 17 generations of Cavendishes who have called Chatsworth home. He led us through breathtaking Painted Hall with colorful frescoes, the State Rooms, chapel, library, and purpose-built Sculpture Gallery, pointing out masterpieces ranging from Roman to old masters.
We spent the afternoon exploring the grounds, including greenhouses, grotto, maze, and spectacular Emperor Fountain built in 1844. The house has had illustrious guests such as King Edward VII, novelist Elizabeth Gaskell, and political philosopher Thomas Hobbes, although speculation surrounds whether Jane Austen based Pemberley on Chatsworth.
For those looking for an affordable base to explore Derbyshire, The Hide is a great option. Its comfortable rooms, family-friendly atmosphere, and stunning surroundings make it an ideal choice for families seeking a memorable stay.
