Chew on this: U.S. food prices are still up 19% since 2022

US Food Prices Continue to Bite, Up 19% Since 2022

The latest Consumer Price Index data reveals that food prices in the US have remained stubbornly high, rising by an annual rate of 3.1% in December. This marks a significant increase from the overall inflation rate of 2.7%. For grocery shoppers, this means that their hard-earned cash is still going further than it did just a few years ago.

Experts point to several factors contributing to this trend, including constrained beef supplies and tariffs on certain food items. The price of ground coffee has increased by nearly $3 per pound since 2022, with the cost now standing at $9.05 per pound in December. Similarly, boneless sirloin steak has seen a rise from $11.67 to $14.03 per pound over the same period.

Other staple items that have become pricier include romaine lettuce, bananas, and 12-ounce cans of orange juice frozen concentrate. The price of eggs, however, has cooled somewhat in recent months, dropping by nearly 21% on an annual basis.

The increasing cost of dining out is also taking a toll on consumers' budgets. According to the Labor Department's measure for "food away from home," prices have risen by an annual rate of 4.1%, compared with overall inflation at 2.7%. Restaurant owners attribute this rise to rising labor and utilities costs, as well as increased demand for dining out since the COVID-19 pandemic.

While President Trump's recent efforts to cut tariffs on certain foods may bring some relief in the short term, experts warn that any price drops will be gradual. For now, consumers are left to grapple with the ongoing impact of inflation on their food bills.

Ugh, 19% increase in food prices since 2022 is insane ๐Ÿคฏ! I'm starting to feel like I'm living in a different world where everything costs more than it did just a few years ago. The fact that experts say tariffs and beef supply issues are the main culprits makes sense, but it's still super frustrating for people who are already struggling to make ends meet ๐Ÿค‘. And don't even get me started on how hard it is to cook healthy meals with prices going up like this... I mean, have you tried buying romaine lettuce lately? It's crazy expensive ๐Ÿฅ—! Anyway, maybe cutting tariffs will help a bit, but it's not going to make a huge difference for most people, right?

can we stop jumping at every little change in prices? 19% over 3 years is still a big chunk of change ๐Ÿค‘ i mean, sure, tariffs and whatnot are contributing factors, but is it really that surprising that some staple items like coffee and steak are getting pricier? ๐Ÿค” and those restaurants think they can just raise their prices on us because labor and utilities costs went up? please ๐Ÿ’ธ the cost of living keeps going up, folks, and we need to start thinking about sustainable solutions instead of just expecting prices to magically drop ๐Ÿ’ก

I just can't believe how much more expensive everything is nowadays ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, $9.05 per pound for ground coffee? That's crazy! And don't even get me started on the eggs - 21% drop in price? Sounds like a joke to me ๐Ÿ˜‚. Seriously though, it's getting harder and harder to make ends meet with all these rising costs. I'm starting to think twice before buying anything that's not already on sale ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. And have you noticed how many people are just giving up on dining out? It's like everyone's trying to save a buck, even if it means skipping the occasional night out ๐Ÿ‘‹. Anyway, I guess this is just one of those things we'll have to get used to, right? *sigh* ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I'm getting so sick of watching my money get eaten away by rising food prices ๐Ÿคฏ. It's like they're charging us per anxiety attack or something ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. I mean, I've seen some crazy price hikes myself - $9.05 for a pound of coffee is just ridiculous ๐Ÿ’ธ. And don't even get me started on eggs, which have literally plummeted in price... yeah right ๐Ÿ™„. Anyways, restaurants are getting hit hard too, and it's no wonder people are opting for home cooking instead ๐Ÿณ. I guess we'll just have to wait it out and hope the prices stabilize soon ๐Ÿคž.

๐Ÿค” I'm not surprised to see food prices still high in the US. It's been a while since 2022 and those beef supplies were already getting tight. Adding tariffs on certain foods doesn't help either. And have you seen the price of coffee lately? $9.05 per pound?! That's crazy! ๐Ÿคฏ I'm glad to hear that egg prices are cooling down a bit, but overall it still seems like groceries are taking up way too big a chunk of our paychecks. 4.1% rise in dining out prices is huge - I can already imagine families and friends struggling to afford going out together. Maybe the tariffs cut will bring some relief eventually?

Ugh, I'm so tired of seeing my grocery bills go up every month ๐Ÿคฏ. 19% since 2022? That's crazy! I remember when coffee was like $3 a pound and now it's over $9 ๐Ÿต. And don't even get me started on bananas, romaine lettuce, and orange juice... all of these staple items are getting pricier by the day ๐Ÿฅ‘. But you know what's not making anyone poorer? Restaurant prices ๐Ÿ’ธ. I've noticed they're actually increasing faster than grocery prices. Maybe we should all just cook more at home instead? ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿค• I'm like super frustrated about this, you know? $9.05 per pound for ground coffee is crazy! ๐Ÿคฏ And don't even get me started on boneless sirloin steak... who can afford that?! ๐Ÿค‘ Like, I get it, prices are gonna rise with tariffs and stuff, but it's just so hard on people's wallets. I feel for all the struggling families out there trying to make ends meet ๐Ÿค. Maybe we need to find ways to reduce food waste or something? ๐Ÿ’ก Anyone got any ideas? ๐Ÿค”

I donโ€™t usually comment but I think itโ€™s kinda crazy how food prices keep going up ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, I get it, there are factors like tariffs and supply chain issues that can affect prices, but 19% since 2022 is still wild to me. I remember when I was younger, we could buy a whole bunch of stuff for like $10 or less, and now it feels like you need to break the bank just to get by ๐Ÿค‘. And donโ€™t even get me started on dining out - itโ€™s like, hello! Restaurants are already expensive enough without having to deal with rising labor costs ๐Ÿ’ธ. I hope they manage to cut some of those tariffs soon, but for now, Iโ€™m just trying to budget and make do ๐Ÿ˜….

I feel for people struggling to make ends meet ๐Ÿค•, especially when it comes to feeding their families. $3 more per pound of coffee is a bit steep, imo ๐Ÿ˜ณ. I guess I'd be okay with it if the economy was doing better ๐Ÿ’ธ. The fact that prices are rising faster than overall inflation is pretty concerning โš ๏ธ. Maybe we'll see some relief soon? ๐Ÿคž

ugh, i feel so bad for all the low-income families struggling to make ends meet ๐Ÿค•. 19% is a crazy jump since 2022 - that's like, a whole year's worth of groceries just gone ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. and don't even get me started on dining out... $14 for a boneless sirloin steak??! that's highway robbery ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ธ. it's no wonder people are opting for home-cooked meals or skipping meals altogether ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ‘€. something needs to be done about food prices, stat! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿคฏ Food prices in the US have gone crazy ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ’ธ! I mean, a 19% increase since 2022 is not what most people want to hear. And it's not just beef or ground coffee that's affected - staples like romaine lettuce and bananas are getting pricier too ๐Ÿฅ—๐ŸŒ. Eggs, on the other hand, have seen a bit of a reprieve with an annual drop of 21% ๐Ÿ˜Š.

I think the main culprit here is labor costs for restaurant owners. With people wanting to go out to eat more since COVID, they need to pay their staff more, and that's got to be passed on to consumers ๐Ÿ’ธ. And don't even get me started on tariffs - it's like a big game of whack-a-mole ๐Ÿคนโ€โ™€๏ธ.

So yeah, I think President Trump's efforts might bring some short-term relief, but the experts are right - any price drops will be slow ๐ŸŒ. In the meantime, consumers just gotta keep an eye on their budgets and maybe start planning meals around what they can afford ๐Ÿด.
