Concealed carry holder shoots 17-year-old alleged car burglar in Roseland

A 17-year-old boy was shot in the arm and leg early Monday morning after a home invasion attempt in Roseland on Chicago's South Side. The homeowner, who had a valid firearm owner identification card and concealed carry license, claimed self-defense after discovering two males, one of whom showed a gun, inside his car.

According to police reports, the 58-year-old man was awoken by a car alarm at approximately 3:40 a.m. in the 9400 block of South Indiana Avenue. Upon exiting his home, he found two individuals - a 17-year-old boy and another male - rummaging through his vehicle with the driver-side window shattered.

One of the intruders allegedly produced a firearm, prompting the homeowner to open fire, striking the teenager in the right forearm and left knee. The injured boy was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he is listed in fair condition.

The other alleged burglar fled east on foot and managed to escape by getting into a gray minivan. Area 2 detectives are currently investigating the incident.

OMG u guys i cant even believe what happnd in Roseland chicago last nite ... like such a scary story but also kinda glad the homeowner had that gun lolol idk wut i would do if somethin like that happend to me or my fam idk how old is that lil guy tho 17? so hurtin he got shot in 2 places poor thng... u feel? anyway dont wanna jst sit here talkn bout it can we pls talk about sumthin else??

Man, this one's got me thinking... like, what does it even mean when we have a system that allows us to protect ourselves with guns? I mean, sure, the homeowner had a legit ID and concealed carry license, but is that enough? Does that really make it okay to shoot someone just because they're trespassing on your property? And what about that 17-year-old's life - fair condition or not, he's still gotta deal with the trauma of being shot. It's like, we're so quick to talk about self-defense, but what about all the other times when it's just a regular old home invasion? Can't we find a way to resolve those situations without someone getting hurt?

And have you ever thought about how easy it is for people like that gray minivan driver to just slip away and escape accountability? I mean, what are we even doing as a society when we let someone get off scot-free like that? It's like... the system is supposed to be working for us all, but sometimes it feels like it's just working against some of us. ๐Ÿค”

idk why ppl think owning a gun makes u invincible, like what's gonna stop that grey minivan from hitting u or a stray bullet from whacking u in da head lol? and another thing, if ur car alarm goes off at 3:40 am, dont u just sleep thru it or ignore it, instead of getting all paranoid and ready to blow somebodys arm off? the dude's gotta calm down and think this thru...

man this is crazy I cant even imagine waking up to some random people breaking into ur car lol thankfully the homeowner had that firearm idk wut he wouldve done without it tho like, the other guy made a move with the gun and all... anyway, I hope the kid recovers soon ๐Ÿคž his grades are probably gonna be affected now tho, and what if hes gotta deal w/ this all semester? poor dude

omg what a close call for that kid ๐Ÿคฏ!! i cant even imagine being in his shoes, like literally literally ๐Ÿ˜จ. i'm so glad he has that concealed carry license tho, it's like meant to be or something ๐Ÿ’ซ. i mean, you can't just let people break into your car and be all "oh noes" ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. the homeowner did what he had to do to protect himself and his property, and if that means shooting someone, so be it ๐Ÿ’”. i'm not saying its ideal or anything, but sometimes you gotta take a stand ๐Ÿ’ช. fingers crossed the other burglar gets caught tho ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿš”

Ugh, this home invasion thingy is just soooo sad ๐Ÿค• I mean, what even is the point of breaking into some dude's car? Can't they see that's not where the valuables are kept anymore ๐Ÿ™„ Anyway, my main concern is that 17-year-old kid is going to be all messed up now ๐Ÿ˜” One minute he's rummaging through a car, the next he's getting shot by someone who was trying to protect themselves... it's just so unpredictable ๐Ÿคฏ And what's with the homeowner not even checking if the people are actually burglars before opening fire? I get self-defense and all that, but can't we find better ways to resolve conflicts without causing physical harm ๐Ÿ’” And btw, why did they have to use a car alarm in the first place? ๐Ÿšจ Can't they see they're already breaking into someone's property? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Umm... I just got back from the most amazing coffee shop downtown ๐Ÿคฉ, their cold brew is literally the best thing since sliced bread. And, omg, have you seen that new anime series everyone's been talking about? It's soooo good! ๐Ÿ˜ But, for real though, this news is kinda crazy... I mean, a home invasion attempt and someone gets shot? That's like, so not okay ๐Ÿค•. And I don't get why the other guy just ran away instead of trying to help his friend or something? Like, what's going on in people's heads sometimes? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ Anyway, I hope the injured boy recovers fast and doesn't have any long-term damage... that would be super scary ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

I'm so glad that homeowner knew how to defend himself and his property... I mean, what if they just walked away and he had to deal with the aftermath? And yeah, the alarm going off at 3:40 am is super convenient - like it was waiting to be triggered just for this exact moment. But seriously though, should we be making it so easy for people to break into cars? I don't think so... ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿšซ

Man, this is just so crazy ๐Ÿคฏ. I'm glad that homeowner was able to defend himself, but can't we all just get along? ๐Ÿ˜• Like, what's the alternative - waiting for them to break in and take whatever they want? It's like, what's wrong with people these days... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

And poor kid, shot twice in one morning... that's not fair at all ๐Ÿ’”. I hope he recovers quickly and can get back to his life. This is just another example of how violent some neighborhoods are getting... ๐Ÿšจ.

Anyway, I'm glad the police are on it and investigating this incident. Safety first, you know? ๐Ÿ’ก Let's keep our communities safe for everyone ๐ŸŒŸ.

Ugh, what's up with these home invasions lately?! ๐Ÿ˜ฉ I mean, I'm all for protecting yourself and your property, but this is just crazy! ๐Ÿคฏ The fact that a 17-year-old got shot in both an arm and leg is just heartbreaking. My thoughts are with the young kid and his family right now. ๐Ÿ’”

I think it's so scary to think about being woken up in the middle of the night by some car alarm, only to find people breaking into your car... that's just a nightmare come true! ๐Ÿ˜จ Can't we all just get along and respect each other's property?! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Anyway, I'm glad the homeowner had his gun and was able to protect himself, but can't we focus on finding ways to prevent these home invasions in the first place? Maybe some community policing or something? ๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ’ก

man, another crazy morning in chicago ๐Ÿคฏ this home invasion attempt could've been so avoidable if those two dudes just took a look around before messing with someone's car it's all about respecting people's property & personal space, you know?

and what's up with the 17-yr-old boy being shot?! ๐Ÿค• that's some scary stuff. hopefully he recovers soon. i guess this is a harsh reminder of the dangers out there, but we gotta stay vigilant as a community.

the fact that the homeowner had a firearm & was able to protect himself in an emergency situation is a different story altogether... but still, it's not like anyone deserves to be shot just because they're doing some stupid stuff ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜ฑ this is just heartbreaking thinking about that poor teenager who got shot during what sounds like an attempted break-in... I think it's crazy how our homes can sometimes turn into war zones, especially in urban areas ๐Ÿค•. The homeowner did what they thought was necessary to protect themselves and their property, but you can't help but feel bad for the kid who got caught up in the middle of it all ๐Ÿ˜”. We need to find ways to prevent these kinds of situations from happening in the first place, like increased community policing and support for at-risk youth ๐Ÿค.

๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ ๐Ÿšจ what's the real reason they broke into his car tho? ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ‘€ [GIF of a car alarm blaring]

๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฌ hope he recovers from those wounds ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿš—๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ why did they leave their getaway car behind? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

idk what's up with all these home invasions lately ๐Ÿค”, just got back from the most random road trip with friends, we were driving through the countryside and stumbled upon this insane music festival ๐ŸŽถ, had to dance for like 5 hours straight, my feet are still throbbing ๐Ÿ˜ฉ anyway, was thinking about food afterwards and I swear, have you tried those new ghost pepper fries at that trendy spot downtown? ๐Ÿ˜ฒ they're insane ๐Ÿ”ฅ, not sure if I'd recommend them but hey, adventure is all about trying new things ๐ŸŒŸ

Man... it's crazy how quickly things can take a turn for the worse, isn't it? I mean, just yesterday I was watching old episodes of "Law & Order" with my family and now this is happening in real life... ๐Ÿ˜ฑ The thought of someone breaking into your house and feeling like they're going to get away with it is just terrifying. And then you've got this 58-year-old homeowner who's gotta protect himself and his property, but also has to live with the guilt of potentially harming someone. It's just so sad that these things are still happening in our communities... ๐Ÿ’”
