Detroit’s Motor City Brewing Works to ‘pause’ after 30+ years - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit's Motor City Brewing Works Shuts Down After 30+ Years, Leaving a Void in the Community

After three decades of serving up craft beer and pizzas to the Cass Corridor crowd, Motor City Brewing Works has announced its intention to "pause" operations indefinitely. The news comes as the brewery was forced to reconsider its future following the termination of the historic thermal steam line that powered it.

The announcement was made on social media, where the brewery expressed gratitude for the countless memories and experiences shared among patrons over the years. A digital montage of historic brewery photos will be displayed in the taproom through February 8, marking the last day before the space is closed.

Motor City Brewing Works has long been more than just a brewery; it's also an art gallery, music venue, and community hub. Founded in 1994 by craft beer aficionado John Linardos, the brewery was known for its unique brews like Ghettoblaster Ale and Notorious DRIPA. The company operated not one, but two locations – one along Detroit's Avenue of Fashion which closed in 2023.

The demise of Motor City Brewing Works is a significant blow to the local beer scene, leaving fans and supporters wondering what comes next for the brand. As the brewery takes a thoughtful look at its future, they're urging patrons to "raise a glass, share a story," and celebrate MCBW's contributions to the Cass Corridor community.

With the Detroit thermal steam system now off-grid, Motor City Brewing Works is facing an uncertain future – one that will undoubtedly be marked by nostalgic memories of past brews and experiences.

I'm really gonna miss this place 🤕. It's like the government is forcing small businesses to close their doors without a plan B in sight 🤑. I mean, Motor City Brewing Works was more than just a brewery - it was an institution! They created jobs, brought in tourists, and contributed to the local economy 💸.

It's also really sad that they had to announce this on social media like that 🤷‍♂️. What if someone didn't know? It feels like a lot of responsibility is being placed on the community to keep the spirit of MCBW alive 🔥. I hope they find a way to reopen or start something new, but until then, it's just a void in our city 🤕.

It makes me think about the impact of gentrification and rising costs on small businesses 💸. Can't we find ways to support these places instead of pushing them out? 🤔

the motor city brewing works has been a staple in detroit for over 30 years 🤖💡 it's hard to imagine the cass corridor without it. i've had some awesome times there with friends and family, trying out their weird and wonderful beers 🍺👍 like ghettoblaster ale. it's not just about the beer though - mcbw has also been a hub for art, music, and community events 🎨📆 they've done so much to bring people together and put detroit on the map.

i'm gonna miss this place 🤕 but i'm also excited to see what john linardos and his team come up with next 🔄 maybe it's time for a reboot or a new chapter in the mcbw story 📚🔥 who knows, but one thing's for sure - detroit will always have a piece of motor city brewing works in its heart ❤️

Aww man 😔... just saw this news about Motor City Brewing Works shutting down after 30+ years 🤯 I mean, I know it's not the end of the world or anything, but still... all those amazing beers and pizzas we loved over the years are gone now ☹️ And have you seen that digital montage they're showing in the taproom? It's like a trip down memory lane 📸, so many good times shared among friends and community. I'm gonna miss that place for sure 😢. But, on a brighter note, it's actually kinda awesome that MCBW is giving us all some time to reminisce and celebrate their contributions to the Cass Corridor scene 💖. Maybe this will be an opportunity for new breweries or initiatives to pop up and carry the torch 🎉? Only time will tell, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a silver lining 💫

I don't usually comment but I'm really gonna miss Motor City Brewing Works 🤕. They're not just a brewery, they're a part of the community's history and culture. All those memories people shared in there... it's like you were a part of something bigger than just a drink. And that Ghettoblaster Ale? Iconic! 😂 The fact that they had to close down because of the steam line thing is just so sad. I mean, can't they find another way to power it or something? 🤔 But at the same time, I get why they're taking a break and trying to figure out their next move. It's like they're saying goodbye to us, but also inviting us to raise a glass one last time and celebrate everything they've given us over the years. That digital montage thing sounds like a great way to do that... 💀

It's disheartening to hear about Motor City Brewing Works' abrupt closure after 30+ years of serving the community 🤕. The Cass Corridor crowd has lost a beloved institution, not just as a brewery but also as an art gallery, music venue, and gathering space. John Linardos' vision has left an indelible mark on the local beer scene, and it's ironic that the historic thermal steam line's termination would be the catalyst for its demise ⚠️.

As patrons bid farewell to MCBW, they'll inevitably reminisce about the iconic brews like Ghettoblaster Ale and Notorious DRIPA 🍺. The brand's legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire a new generation of craft brewers, but it's unfortunate that this chapter has come to an abrupt end 💔.

😔💔🍺 I'm dyin' over here! MCBW has been a staple in our community for so long 🤯 30+ years is a looong time 💕. Where's the next home for us beer lovers? 🤔 Detroit needs this space, it's like losin' a part of its soul 😩. They've done so much more than just brews... they've been a gallery, a music spot, and a hub for events 🎉! What happens to all those memories we made there? ❤️ Raise a glass indeed 🥳 let's toast MCBW one last time before it closes its doors 😢🍺

Wow 🤯 this is so sad! a Detroit institution like MCBW just closes its doors after 30+ years? it's not just about the beer, it's also an art gallery, music venue... what's going to happen to all that history and community vibe? 😔 Interesting how they're letting people share their stories and memories before it's too late 📚

OMG, 30+ years is like, forever! I'm literally heartbroken for all those fans who grew up with MCBW. What's the point of even having a taproom if you're not brewing? 🍺😢 It's like a part of Detroit's history just vanished into thin air... I mean, I get that they need to take care of their steam system and all, but it feels like such an unnecessary pause! Can't they just find a way to keep the beers flowing?! 😩
