Discord will soon require age verification to access adult content

Discord To Require Age Verification for Adult Content Starting March

In an effort to bolster its child safety, Discord is set to introduce new measures starting in March. Initially, the platform will have a "teen-appropriate experience" by default, with users over 18 needing to manually verify their age to access adult content and join age-gated spaces.

However, following backlash from users, the company has revised its approach. The majority of adults will now be subject to an automated age verification process using Discord's AI-powered prediction model. This model assesses factors such as account tenure, device information, and community activity patterns to determine a user's age.

For those who don't pass the automatic age check, removing restrictions will require a one-time verification method โ€“ either submitting a government-issued ID or taking a selfie video for age estimation. The company claims that both of these methods will be kept confidential and deleted immediately after confirmation.

Despite initial reservations about an age inference model running in the background, Discord has revised its stance. According to the company, most adults won't need to undergo manual verification, as the AI model provides accurate assessments based on aggregated data across communities.

These changes follow Discord's recent attempts to boost child safety measures. In 2023, it banned teen dating channels and CSAM (child sexual abuse material) generated by AI. The platform has also added content filters and automated warnings to protect minors.

The introduction of these new policies will roll out globally in early March, with both existing and new users potentially required to submit age verification for adult content.

๐Ÿค” I'm kinda okay with this move from Discord. I mean, their previous approach sounded a bit too invasive, but now it sounds like they're finding a balance. The AI model thing still has me a little uneasy, but I guess it's better than manually checking every single user's ID. And hey, at least they're making an effort to keep the verification process anonymous and secure. Still, it's a bit frustrating that we have to deal with this in the first place... I mean, can't we just use our common sense about online content? ๐Ÿ™„

Ugh, I'm so torn about this one ๐Ÿค”. On the one hand, it's awesome that Discord is taking steps to protect minors and ensure a safe community. I mean, who doesn't want to keep those little minds protected from toxic chat rooms? ๐Ÿ˜Š But on the other hand, I'm all about freedom of expression... and I don't want some AI model making judgments about someone's age ๐Ÿค–. What if it's wrong? What if it misses a 25-year-old trying to escape their parents? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

And what's with the selfie requirement?! ๐Ÿ“ธ I get that safety first, but come on, that's just weird. Can't they just trust us adults to do our own thing? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Still, I guess it's better than nothing. And hey, at least Discord is trying to adapt and learn from its mistakes ๐Ÿ’ก.

It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out in March ๐Ÿ“†. Will the AI model live up to its promises? Only time will tell ๐Ÿ”ฎ.

I'm low-key excited about Discord's new move ๐Ÿค—. It's about time we prioritize our digital safety, especially when it comes to minors. The fact that they're introducing an AI-powered age verification model is a big deal โ€“ I mean, who doesn't trust a robot to tell if you're 18 or not ๐Ÿ˜‚. But seriously, it'll be a huge relief knowing that we won't have to worry about our age being inferred and potentially causing trouble.

I do hope they stick to their promise that the automated check won't be super intrusive though ๐Ÿคž. No one wants to have to take a selfie for age estimation โ€“ it's just too much info ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. And can we please get some more transparency around how this AI model works? We need to make sure it's fair and accurate.

I'm all about progress, but I also think we need to address the root issue here: why do we even need age verification for adult content on Discord? Can't we just have a more nuanced approach to moderation instead of relying on tech alone? ๐Ÿค”

omg noooo lol they're gonna mess it up... think about all the adults who just wanna watch some explicit vids on discord without having to show their face or ID lol what's next?! they gotta have a team of moderators checking every single request and reporting back to mom lol this is like, so overkill. they're basically creating a huge barrier for legit adults who just want to chill and get adult content i mean what's wrong with using a simple username verification system?

I'm gonna love this... ๐Ÿคฏ Discord's just gonna be like a super strict gatekeeper now, right? So basically they're saying "oh you're an adult, prove it" instead of trusting their own users to know what's good. I mean, AI-powered age verification is still a pretty sketchy concept, but whatever. They say the model is gonna be accurate and all that jazz, but what about all the 25-year-olds who just wanna watch some anime with their friends? Are they gonna have to take a selfie and submit their ID every time they want to join a server? It's just too much, you know? ๐Ÿ™„

I'm low-key relieved about Discord's decision to make age verification mandatory ๐Ÿค—. I mean, we all know how problematic CSAM is and how it affects our online communities ๐Ÿšซ. Adding AI-powered age checks makes total sense โ€“ it's not like anyone's gonna get caught out by just having a generic filter ๐Ÿ™„.

But what's more important to me is that they're not making users go through some super invasive verification process that'd make them feel like they're being treated like minors ๐Ÿ˜’. One-time government ID submissions or selfies for age estimation might seem sketchy, but at least it's kept private and temporary, right? ๐Ÿคซ

It's also worth noting that this change will mostly affect adults who are already using Discord in a responsible way โ€“ the ones who don't need to be babysat ๐Ÿ˜Š. And honestly, I think most of us can appreciate the company taking proactive steps towards creating safer online spaces for everyone.

Overall, I'm feeling pretty optimistic about this new policy ๐ŸŒˆ. It's all about finding that sweet spot between user-friendliness and community safety ๐Ÿค

omg what's next gonna be a government ID check on every single app i use?? ๐Ÿ™„ i get that discord wants to protect kids but this is just gonna lead to a whole lot of hassle and red tape...like, do we really need an AI model judging us adults anyway? seems like they're overcompensating here ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

omg i no why discord do dis ๐Ÿคฏ they know ppl tryin to get around the rules but its good 2 see them takin this serious about child safety ๐Ÿ‘ at first id be all like lol how r dey gonna catch me but now its more like cool, they got a system in place ๐Ÿ˜Ž and btw i hope dey test dis ai model on a smaller scale 1st so its not like dey gonna send it out here and it start causin problems ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm not sure if I like this new update from Discord ๐Ÿค”. On one hand, it's cool that they're taking steps to keep kids safe online. But on the other, now we're all being treated like we need permission just to hang out with friends or watch some mature content ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The AI-powered age verification model sounds sketchy โ€“ how accurate can it really be? And what if I'm 25 and have a kid's birthday party planned this weekend? Do I really need to do an ID check every time I log in ๐Ÿ˜’. It feels like they're trying to control our online experience too much ๐Ÿ’ป. Still, I guess it's better than nothing ๐Ÿ‘.

[Grumpy Cat face ๐Ÿ˜’] Discord trying to adult now ๐Ÿคฃ. Seriously tho, AI can't even recognize grandma's face ๐Ÿ“ฑ, how r u gonna make sure that's not a 40 yr old in ur 60s account? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ [distracted meme of a person trying to concentrate with a cat on their lap]

idk why they're making this so complicated lol ๐Ÿคฏ Discord's always been a chill platform but now it feels like they're trying to make things too techy. i mean, who needs an AI-powered age prediction model? just leave the adults alone and let us figure it out ourselves. but at the same time, safety is important, especially with all the weird stuff going on online ๐Ÿคช

I think its pretty cool that discord is taking steps to keep our young ones safe online! I mean, who wants their kids getting exposed to some mature stuff on the platform? The new automated age verification system seems like a solid plan - its not like they're just gonna start judging people's ages left and right. And honestly, I think its great that discord is using AI to help figure out if someone is of adult age or not... I mean, who wants to spend their precious time filling out forms or taking selfies? ๐Ÿ˜‚ it makes total sense that most adults will be able to use the platform without any issues!
