Disney is set to shake up its Disney+ platform by introducing a vertical video feed later this year. According to Erin Teague, Disney's EVP of product management for Disney Entertainment and ESPN, the new feature will allow users to browse original short-form programming, repurposed social clips, and reimagined scenes from longer-form episodes or movies in one unified app.
The idea behind the change is to create a dynamic feed that refreshes in real-time based on a user's viewing history. For example, if a user has watched sports content before, they may see more sports-related videos appear at the top of their feed.
Disney is not the first company to experiment with vertical video. Netflix, for instance, has been testing a similar feature using clips from its own shows and movies. The idea seems to be gaining traction, as Disney's move suggests that it wants to stay ahead of the curve in terms of what types of content users want to see on their streaming platforms.
Disney also recently added a vertical video tab called "Verts" to its ESPN app, further solidifying the company's interest in this format.
