Don't look down! Lightbulb-changers on Clifton Suspension Bridge: Beezer's best photograph

Photographer Paul 'Beez' Beedle Clings to Life in Thrilling Shot from Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Forty years ago, the then 19-year-old Beez was handed an opportunity to capture a group of maintenance workers as they changed lightbulbs on top of the iconic towers of Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge. The risk was immense – he had to climb multiple ladders and balance precariously over vast chasms as the bridge's suspension cables stretched out like giant metal fingers below.

"It felt like I'd overcome my vertigo just to get up there," Beez reflects. "I was still trying not to look down, and suddenly these guys were in front of me, hanging on for dear life – no safety gear or harnesses in sight." Despite the absence of any formal protection, the trusty old-school workers proved themselves as seasoned professionals, snapping into place with ease.

The resulting image is a hair-raising testament to Beez's unbridled enthusiasm and bravery. The bridge, suspended high above the Avon Gorge, becomes an eerie backdrop for this impromptu photo shoot. As one looks at the picture now, it's astonishing how little has changed – apart from maybe a hard hat or two.

In a career spanning decades, Beez has built an enviable portfolio that defies conventions and redefines what is possible with camera and human ingenuity. Whether documenting his youth's punk rock scene or chronicling the lives of others through powerful images, he leaves no stone unturned in capturing life's fleeting moments.

I'm not surprised by this crazy story 🤯, I mean who tries to take a photo of people changing lightbulbs on a suspension bridge without any safety gear? That's just asking for trouble... and Beez is lucky to be alive! 😬 The fact that he was able to get the shot without anyone getting hurt is just a testament to how reckless he must have been back then. And now he's all old-school and nostalgic about it, like "oh yeah I was so brave back in my youth". Give me a break, dude... 🙄

omg this guy must've been literally insane to climb ladders on a bridge with zero safety gear lol what was going through his mind? but at the same time i'm low-key impressed how his subjects didn't freak out and just went about their day like "oh yeah, photographer dude is taking pics"

whoa this guy Beez is insane lol 🤯 i mean i know ppl think climbing ladders on suspension bridges is crazy but this is like next level stuff 🌉 and its awesome that the maintenance workers were down to earth about it too, no drama or anything just got the job done. i love his work, always pushing boundaries and taking risks with his camera 📸

omg this pic from Beez is giving me LIFE! 🤩 I mean, can you even imagine being up there without any safety gear? 😱 It's insane how fearless he must've been to take that shot. and the best part is that it's still got that same raw energy 40 years later - it's like looking at a time capsule of street photography perfection! 📸 I love how Beez has captured these iconic moments in history, giving us a glimpse into what life was like back then. his enthusiasm is infectious and makes you wanna grab your camera and head out to capture the world around you too! 💥

😮 can you believe this photo from 40 years ago? it's crazy how reckless these maintenance workers were back then! 😂 and yet, Beez managed to capture a truly iconic shot with zero safety gear 🤯. what's even more impressive is that the workers were so trusting of him that they just started snapping away without any hesitation 💪. it's amazing how this photo still holds up today – it's like time stood still for a brief moment in 1985 ⏰. and Beez, man... his portfolio is insane 📸 he's been around forever and yet he's still pushing boundaries with his camera 👍

📸👍 I mean, can you even imagine having to climb ladders on a bridge with nothing but your wits and a camera? Beez is literally a legend 🤩! The fact that the maintenance workers just rolled with it and started snapping pics right back at him is just mind-blowing. It's crazy how that one shot captures not just the bravery of the people involved, but also the beauty and danger of that bridge. And I love how he's still pushing boundaries after all these years – his enthusiasm is infectious! 👏

lol @ this old-school pic 📸💥 Beez must've had some serious crazy pills back in the day to think it was a good idea to just hang out on a ladder with no safety gear 😂 I mean, I love the nostalgia factor and all, but come on, how many close calls did he have? 🤯 I'm pretty sure that's why they invented OSHA now 🙄 But seriously, that image is straight fire 🔥, gives me chills just looking at it!

OMG, I'm literally shook by this old pic lol... like, how did Beez even not die up there?! 🤯 He's basically a superhero! And can you believe those maintenance workers were just chillin' without any safety gear? Like, what if they fell off?! 😱 But at the same time, it's pretty cool that he got such an epic shot out of it... I mean, who needs safety protocols when you've got talent on your side, right? 📸 And btw, 40 years ago, the pics were probably way cooler than they are now lol.

😒 I'm so over how hard it is to get a decent selfie on social media! 🤣 I mean, can't we just have a feature that allows us to share a photo with our friends from the most epic locations? 📸 Like, take a pic at Clifton Suspension Bridge and automatically tag all my mates who've been there too... or even auto-generate a group chat invite! 😂 Come on, tech giants, get it together! 👎

omg 🤯 that pic from 40 yrs ago is insane! i mean beez was literally hanging off a ladder with no safety gear lol what a thrill-seeker 🔥 his trusty maintenance worker friends were so cool too, they're like the OGs of bridge photography 💥 and can u believe he's still shooting pics after all these yrs? 📸 i love how his style hasn't changed much, still got that raw energy to him 🎥 btw who knew 1 hard hat could make such a difference 😂
