Don't use 'admin': UK's top 20 most-used passwords revealed as scams soar

Hackers are cashing in on the UK's most egregious password failings as a staggering number of Britons use the easiest passwords imaginable. According to a recent study by NordPass, a top 20 list has revealed that "admin" and "123456" - both laughably weak choices - sit atop the ranks of commonly used passwords.

This sorry state of affairs is no surprise to cybersecurity experts, who have repeatedly sounded the alarm about the dangers of simple passwords. Yet, time and again, Britons seem to be ignoring these warnings, opting for easy-to-guess phrases and numbers that offer little protection against hackers.

The study's findings paint a bleak picture, with words, number combinations, and common keyboard patterns dominating the top 20. The word "password" itself takes up five spots in this list, while its simple numeric counterparts occupy another five slots. It's a puzzle that's all too easy to crack, with cybersecurity specialists warning of the devastating consequences.

Karolis Arbaciauskas, a spokesperson for NordPass, puts the problem starkly: "About 80% of data breaches are caused by compromised, weak, and reused passwords. The problem is that people tend to reuse them quite often... It's terrible. People who use weak passwords, or reuse them, risk their digital lives and their identities."

As a result, hackers have every reason to feel confident in their ability to break into accounts using these easily guessable passwords. The attack methods are straightforward: dictionary attacks, which involve systematically trying common words and variations, can crack even the most basic of passwords.

The consequences for Britons are dire. With four out of five people reportedly reusing the same password across multiple accounts, hackers have an almost open door to compromising log-ins. It's a vulnerability that can be easily exploited, leaving individuals exposed to identity theft and financial ruin.

So what's being done to address this issue? Experts recommend taking simple steps to boost security: making passwords long and strong by combining random words or numbers, letters and special characters; avoiding password reuse altogether; updating weak passwords on high-risk accounts like banks, email, work, and mobile; and utilizing password management tools or apps that can generate and save secure passwords.

Additionally, users are urged to activate two-factor authentication (2FA) for their most sensitive online accounts - a simple yet effective security measure that adds an extra layer of protection. With the right precautions in place, Britons can significantly reduce their vulnerability to hackers and protect their digital lives from the scammers who seek to exploit them.

omg u gotta change ur password like now!! 😱 i'm not surprised tho, ppl r so lazy & think they're above getting hacked lol. "admin" & "123456"?? really? it's like u just wanna make it easy 4 hackers 2 get in! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ we need 2 take security serious & start using strong passwords already! i mean, its not that hard to remember a few random words or numbers and special chars... πŸ€” it's like, ur life depends on it kinda lol. u gotta use password managers & 2FA too, that way u got extra protection πŸ›‘οΈ. hackers r gonna keep cashin in on our weakness tho, so lets get ahead of the game & take control of our online security πŸ”’

omg 80% of data breaches are caused by weak passwords? 😱 that's a huge number! i'm not surprised tho, i mean who doesn't love using easy-to-remember passwords like "admin" or "qwerty"? 🀣 but seriously, it's so important to take security measures now. i've been using password managers for ages and activating 2FA on all my accounts - it's super convenient and makes me feel way more secure πŸ’». the thing is, hackers are just waiting for people like us to make it easy for them πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. so let's take action and strengthen our passwords already! πŸ”’

omg u can't be serious people still using admin and 123456 as passwords πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ? it's like they're begging to get hacked! i mean, cybersecurity experts have been warning about this for ages but ppl just don't listen πŸ™„. the fact that 80% of data breaches are caused by weak passwords is just wild 😲. and it's not just about using strong passwords either, ppl who reuse them are basically giving hackers a free pass πŸ”“.

anyway, i do think it's kinda funny how password is actually on the list 🀣. like, come on guys, get with the times! make your passwords long and strong by combining random words or numbers and letters, and for goodness sake don't reuse them across multiple accounts πŸ™. two-factor auth is also a no-brainer, it's like adding an extra layer of security πŸ”’.

i guess the good news is that ppl are starting to take notice and experts have some solid tips on how to improve your password game πŸ’ͺ. so let's all just take a deep breath and make sure our passwords are on point πŸ™ πŸ‘

omg u gotta get ur passwords straightened out!!! i mean, admin & 123456 are literally not even trying πŸ˜‚ they should really look into a password manager app, it's like 1 click to have strong and unique passwords saved for all ur accounts 🀯 and 2FA is def the way to go too, it's like an extra layer of security 🚧 anyone with decent hacking skills can crack simple passwords in sec 😳 so let's all just take a sec to update our password game & keep our online lives safe πŸ’»πŸ’Έ

I'm so fed up with ppl using "admin" as a password lol πŸ’β€β™€οΈπŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, come on! It's like they think no one's gonna try to guess it πŸ€”. And 123456? That's just laughable πŸ˜‚. It's like saying "I give up, hackers!" πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Experts have been warning us about this for ages, but people just keep on using the same ol' weak passwords πŸ™„.

It's not just the passwords themselves, it's how ppl reuse them everywhere 🀯. I mean, who uses the same password for their email and bank account? πŸ€‘ That's like putting a big neon sign on your identity saying "Take me!" πŸ’‘. And don't even get me started on 2FA... ppl are still not using that πŸ˜’.

It's like we're all just waiting for hackers to come and steal our lives πŸ’Έ. But seriously, if ppl just take some basic precautions like using strong passwords, avoiding reuse, and activating 2FA, they can protect themselves 🀝. It's not rocket science! πŸ”¬

πŸ˜• I'm not surprised at all that people are still using ridiculously weak passwords like "admin" and "123456". It's like they're begging for hackers to break in! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, come on guys, it's 2025 and we've known about the dangers of simple passwords for ages. Don't people listen? πŸ™„

It's just so frustrating because cybersecurity experts are always warning us about this stuff and yet we still don't take it seriously enough. We need to start taking our online security more seriously, like really seriously! πŸ’― It's not that hard to make a password long and strong by combining random words or numbers, letters and special characters. πŸ€” And please, for the love of all things digital, stop reusing passwords across multiple accounts! 😩

The fact that hackers can just use dictionary attacks to crack even basic passwords is just terrifying. πŸ’₯ It's like we're living in a bad sci-fi movie where our online lives are constantly under threat. But it doesn't have to be that way! 🌟 If we all take the right precautions, like using password management tools and enabling two-factor authentication, we can significantly reduce our vulnerability to hackers.

Let's get serious about our online security, guys! πŸ’ͺ It's time to stop being lazy and start taking care of ourselves online. 😊
