Employee charged with Staten Island supermarket arson, FDNY says customer put out fire

Staten Island Supermarket Employee Charged with Arson as Thanksgiving Shopping Continues

A 21-year-old employee of a Staten Island supermarket has been charged with arson, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment for intentionally setting fire to the store on November 26. The ShopRite on Greaves Lane in Bay Terrace was open when Dominick Sacchetti allegedly lit the blaze at around 3:45 pm, putting the lives of customers and responding firefighters at risk.

According to FDNY officials, surveillance footage shows that paper towels and household cleaning products went up in flames as the fire spread. A customer intervened, using a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze before anyone was injured. The incident resulted in estimated damages exceeding $100,000.

FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker said that residents of Staten Island were "beginning to prepare for Thanksgiving with their families" when this individual's actions posed a threat to their safety and the lives of those responding to the emergency.

Dominick Sacchetti faces multiple charges related to the incident, including arson, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment. After being arraigned on Tuesday, he posted bail set at $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond. The Richmond County District Attorney's office has stated that they will prosecute the case "to the fullest extent of the law."

Sacchetti's lawyer declined to comment on the incident as of early Thursday morning.

I mean come on 🤯! This dude loses all sense of decency and puts a bunch of innocent people in harm's way for some twisted reason. 21 years old, really? Can't even control their temper or emotions. And what's with the timing? Just as everyone was getting into the holiday spirit, this guy comes along and sets off a fire that could've easily been fatal. The customer who jumped in to save the day is a real hero 🙏. Hopefully justice gets served and this kid faces serious consequences for their reckless behavior 💸.

OH MY GOSH, THIS IS SO SAD!!! I MEAN, WHO WOULD DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT ON THANKSGIVING DAY?! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE A TIME FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO COME TOGETHER, NOT FIGHTING FOR THEIR LIVES FROM A MASSIVE FIRE. I FEEL BAD FOR THE CUSTOMER WHO HAD TO RUN IN AND PUT OUT THE FLAMES WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER!!! $100K WORTH OF DAMAGE IS CRAZY TOO, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE IN THE STORE AT THAT MOMENT.

AND WHAT'S EVEN HARDER IS THAT THIS GUY, DOMINICK SACCHETTI, HE'S ONLY 21 YEARS OLD!!! I GUESS WE CAN HOPE THAT HE'S GETTING THE HELP HE NEEDS BECAUSE WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAVE LED HIM TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS. BUT FOR NOW, LET'S JUST HOPE HE SERVES HIS SENTENCE AND LEARNS FROM HIS MISTAKE 💔👮

😳 just saw the news about that Staten Island supermarket employee who set fire to the store on Thanksgiving day 🤯 what's wrong with people these days?! like, how can you be so reckless and put everyone's life at risk? 😩 I'm so glad a customer intervened with a fire extinguisher to prevent any major injuries or worse... it's just crazy that someone would think this is an okay way to go. I mean, what are they gonna say in court? People are tryin' to shop for food and stuff for their families, not dealin' with some crazy person makin' a scene. And the fact that they had to use fire extinguishers just 'cause of one person bein' stupid... it's just so reckless 🤦‍♂️. And now Dominick Sacchetti's gotta face the music - 50k bail, yeah he's gettin' the message 😅. I guess Staten Island's got some crazy people out there... 🚨
