England vs Sri Lanka: Harry Brook calls Colombo pitch for second ODI 'probably the worst' he's played on

England's captain Harry Brook has slammed the pitch used for their second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo, calling it "probably the worst" he's ever played on. The 26-year-old all-rounder was critical of the surface that helped his team secure a five-wicket victory, thanks to Joe Root's match-winning 75.

Brook's comments came after England bowled an astonishing 40.3 overs of spin in the match - the most they have sent down in an ODI - eclipsing the 36 overs they bowled in a 50-over match against Pakistan in Sharjah in 1985. The tourists used six spinners for the first time in the format, and managed to extract significant turn from the pitch, increasing their average of spin by 15%.

The England captain's assessment was scathing, with Brook stating that he had to adapt quickly on the challenging surface. "You had to go out there and get off strike as quickly as possible and try to get the other batter on strike," he said.

While Brook reserved praise for his fellow Yorkshireman Joe Root, who played a masterful innings given the conditions. Root's application at the crease, combined with his lightness of foot and ability to pick the Sri Lankan spinners made him the key man in England's chase against the turning ball.

Brook's comments have raised questions about the suitability of the Colombo pitch for ODI cricket, with Root describing it as a "very difficult surface" that was not conducive to the format. The pitch has been known to turn significantly, and England will be hoping that their experience in playing on such surfaces will serve them well in the rest of the series.

omg can u believe what england's captain said about the pitch 🀯! 40.3 overs of spin? that's wild! i mean, it was a good win for england but brook's comments are kinda harsh πŸ˜‚. maybe he just didn't like the way the ball bounced or something? anyway, glad joe root stepped up and saved the day πŸ’ͺ. but yeah, the pitch does seem pretty tricky to play on... hope they get some luck in the rest of the series 🀞

omg i dont get why they have to play on pitches like that in odi cricket πŸ€”πŸ˜’ it sounds so hard for the players to adapt to the spin and everything! brook is right, u gotta get off strike ASAP and try to make the other player struggle... seems like a real challenge πŸ˜… anyway, cant wait to see how england does in the rest of the series πŸ‘€

just watched that england vs sri lanka odi match 🏟️ and i gotta say, that colombo pitch was a total nightmare for the batsmen! 40+ overs of spin bowled by england? that's insane 🀯. brook's comments about it being probably the worst he's ever played on are spot on imo. i mean, who needs that much turn on an odi ball? it makes the game look like a snore fest 😴. but you have to give credit to joe root for handling that surface like a pro πŸ™Œ. maybe england can use their experience to help sri lanka adjust to these conditions and make the game more competitive? πŸ‘€

ugh don't even get me started on this pitch 🀯 it's like they took all the spinners in the world and threw 'em at these batters lmao 40.3 overs is crazy! i mean, joe root's innings was insane tho, he's a total masterclass player πŸ’ͺ whoever designed this pitch needs to reevaluate their priorities because it's making odi cricket so challenging πŸ€”

ugh i feel so bad for england's bowlers πŸ€• they have to deal with those crazy Sri Lankan spinners all the time! 40.3 overs is insane, and it's like they're trying to break some kind of record? πŸ™ƒ anyway, hopefully they can find a way to tame that pitch in the rest of the series... fingers crossed for them πŸ‘

ugh man this colombo pitch is like totally insane πŸ˜‚πŸŒ΄ i mean bro 40+ overs of spin? that's just ridiculous! did they even test it beforehand or was it just a "let's see what happens" kinda situation πŸ€”? i mean i know the england team is good and all but come on, 6 spinners?! that's like playing with a bunch of novelty toys 🎸 i'm no expert but even joe root is saying it's a "very difficult surface"... yeah no kidding, bro! πŸ‘

that colombo pitch is defo one weird surface lol, i mean i'm happy england got the wickets but 40 overs of spin is wild 🀯 and i can see why brook would say it's probably the worst he's ever played on, especially for a guy who's not used to playing with that much turn. hope they can find some more neutral pitches in sri lanka tho πŸ˜…

🀯 Oh my gosh, can you believe Harry Brook's comments about the Colombo pitch?! 😱 I mean, it's like he was saying "this surface is basically impossible to master"! πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ I get why he'd want to adapt quickly and not get stuck on strike for too long, but 40.3 overs of spin? That's crazy! 😲 And Root just played an amazing game, so it's hard to complain about the pitch when he was doing so well! 🎯 Still, you gotta wonder if England can keep up the momentum against more challenging surfaces in this series... fingers crossed for them though! πŸ’ͺ

ugh what a joke the england team is so predictable they just bowl 40 odd overs of spin and expect to win πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ i mean come on harry brook you're not exactly breaking new ground with that tactic 😴 and don't even get me started on joe root he's like the opposite of exciting watching him bat is like watching paint dry 😴 anyway great job england managed to scrape out a win but it was only because they had six bowlers and the pitch was basically begging for them to spin it πŸ™„

This whole thing is like what's going on with our local government funding for sports infrastructure – they gotta think about the long game, you know? πŸ€” England's got a top-notch team, but it's clear they're struggling with this Colombo pitch. It's like, why can't we get a consistent surface that doesn't play favorites? Brook's right, it's all about adapting and getting the other guy on strike – sounds like politics to me! 🏟️ The fact that Root came out on top is just a reminder that sometimes you gotta roll with the punches and make the most of what you're given. But what about the rest of us? Shouldn't we be getting better pitches, not struggling against all-comers? That's the question – are we just gonna keep playing catch-up until someone else sorts it out? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

ugh, what's up with these pitches in Colombo? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ England's captain Harry Brook is right, it was a nightmare to play on! I mean, who wants to be stuck on strike for like an hour just trying to survive? 😬 The spinners were on fire and it was like they were bowling on different days. And what's with the 40+ overs of spin in an ODI? Like, that's not cricket anymore! 🀯 It's all about finesse and strategy, not just throwing leggies all day. But hey, at least Joe Root stepped up and played a masterful innings to save the match for his team πŸ’ͺ. Fingers crossed they can replicate this success in the rest of the series and get some decent pitches to play on 🀞
