European football: 'utterly outrageous' fireworks cause Ajax abandonment

Ajax were left seething after an "utterly outrageous" firework display brought their Eredivisie match with Groningen to an abrupt halt at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The fireworks, set off behind one of the goals, sent clouds of smoke billowing into the air, forcing referee Bas Nijhuis to abandon the game just five minutes in.

The Dutch champions were livid about the safety risks posed by the pyrotechnics and have condemned the display as completely unacceptable. "We consider what happened in the stadium this evening to be utterly outrageous," they said in a statement. "We offer our apologies to everyone who has been affected in any way, particularly the players and spectators. The safety of both groups is paramount, and we will not tolerate such reckless behavior in our stadiums."

The incident marred an otherwise thrilling match that had begun on a frantic note, with Groningen striking first through Azzedine Ounahi's thunderous goal from just inside the box. However, Ajax equalized before half-time with a goal of their own.

In other action across Europe, Real Madrid battled to a 1-1 draw against Girona in La Liga. Kylian Mbappé scored a second-half penalty for the visitors after Vinícius Júnior was fouled inside the box, but Azzedine Ounahi had given his side an early lead with a powerful strike.

The title race in Spain remains tight, with Real Madrid slipping to second place on 33 points, one behind leaders Barcelona. Villarreal and Atlético Madrid are also in contention for top spot, while Inter Milan secured a 2-0 win over Pisa in Serie A to move level with AC Milan at the top of the table.

In Norway, Viking have won their first league title in 34 years after hammering Vålerenga 5-1 on the final day of the Eliteserien season. The Stavanger club's fans went wild as they celebrated their historic victory, having finished third last season and narrowly missing out on a Champions League spot.

🔥💥 It looks like some people think they're above the law... 🤦‍♂️ "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" - Lord Acton (this firework display is a perfect example of how reckless behavior can have disastrous consequences) 👎

🤯 come on guys, fireworks in a football stadium? it's just asking for trouble 😒 they should've thought about the players, spectators, and everyone else around 🤦‍♂️ 5 minutes into the game already abandoned? what's the point of even having a match if you're gonna stop it like that ⏰👎

I'm still trying to process what happened at that Ajax match 🤯. I mean, who sets off fireworks behind the goal during a football match? It's just not safe, you know? 😡 The players are already so physically fit, you don't need to add all that extra risk to the mix. And those smoke clouds were huge! You could barely see what was going on on the pitch 🌫️.

And can you believe Ajax is still fuming about it? They're right to be, though - safety should always come first in a stadium setting. I hope the people responsible for that display are held accountable 💯. It's just not worth it. The game itself was pretty intense, too - Groningen's Azzedine Ounahi scored some crazy goal from outside the box 🎯... anyway, yeah, fireworks don't belong in football stadiums. Period. 👎

Ugh, come on! Can't these guys even get it right? Fireworks at a soccer match? Are you kidding me?! 🤯 That was just waiting to happen and now Ajax is left fuming about it. I mean, what's next? Setting off the fireworks during the game itself? No thanks! The safety of everyone involved should be the top priority, not some fancy display.

And can we talk about how Groningen got a goal? Like, that was one-in-a-million shot! But honestly, they didn't even need to score because the game gets abandoned anyway. It's just so frustrating when these things happen. At least Viking finally won their league title after all those years, but come on, can we just have some basic common sense at a sports event? 😒

can u believe this? fireworks at a soccer match? who sets off pyro in the middle of an arena? 🤯 i mean, i get that it was a thrilling game but come on, safety first! Ajax is all over it, saying it's "utterly outrageous" and stuff. can we have some info on what exactly went down? where did these fireworks even come from? was it a fan or the stadium staff? need more deets before i start jumping to conclusions 😒

omg can u believe that some dude set off fireworks in the middle of an ajax match 🤯 like what is he even thinking?! i was watching the game too and it was literally just getting started when they stopped it. i'm all for having fun but safety first, guys! 😅 ajax is being super unreasonable though, a little bit of smoke isnt gonna kill anyone...i get why they're mad tho, you dont wanna have an accident on the field. anyhoo, congrats to vikings for winning that league title tho 🎉🏆

ugh, fireworks at a football match... like who thought that was a good idea? 🤦‍♂️ the whole thing just felt so reckless and irresponsible. i mean, can't they see how much more enjoyable the game is when it's safe for everyone involved? 🙄 ajax are being super reasonable by calling out the display as "utterly outrageous", but i guess that's just a nice way of saying "we're really mad at you". 😒 on the bright side, groningen did get to score first and stuff, so that was somewhat exciting, i guess... 💥

I'm literally so done with fireworks at sports events 🚫😡! Can't believe Ajax were like totally outraged about it - I mean who wants to play football in a cloud of smoke?! It's not just about the game, it's about safety first 🔥👮‍♂️. And Groningen are already getting some heat for their team being reckless 🤦‍♂️. Maybe they should've thought that one through before setting off those fireworks 😒. Anyway, hope everyone who was affected by the incident is okay 💕. On a more positive note, congrats to Viking for winning their first league title in 34 years 🎉🏆! That's some serious dedication and hard work 💪.

Ugh, can't believe that crazy firework display in Ajax's match 🤯! I mean, I get it, Groningen probably wanted to spice up the game but come on, safety first, right? 😬 Those smoke clouds were everywhere and just waiting for a spark (literally) to set off. Glad no one got seriously hurt though.

The way Ajax reacted was totally fair, they're not gonna let some reckless behavior ruin their season 💯. On a more positive note, congrats to Viking on winning that league title in Norway 🎉! They must've been so relieved after all those years of waiting 🙏. And nice job by Inter Milan, getting back into the mix with that win over Pisa 🔥. Bring on the rest of the season, can't wait for more thrilling matches and less pyro antics 😉.

omg can you believe that fireworks at an Ajax match?? 🤯 it's like, what was the guy thinking?! i mean i get the excitement of the game but setting off firework right behind the goal is just reckless. and now ajax are left seething about it. safety first ppl! it's not worth risking someone's life for a cool pyrotechnic display. and btw 5 minutes into the match is like, way too early to stop the game... what if they needed those 5 mins to get back in the game? 🤷‍♂️

Ugh, fireworks at a soccer match? 🙄 It's just so reckless! Ajax is right to be upset about the safety risks those pyrotechnics posed to players, spectators, and staff. I mean, what if someone got hurt or worse? 😷 The fact that the game was abandoned after just five minutes is crazy. And can you believe Groningen thought it'd be a good idea to set off fireworks during a match?! 🤦‍♂️

It's not like they were celebrating a special occasion or anything, just a regular old soccer match. You'd think they'd know better than to mess with the safety of everyone in attendance. And now Ajax is left fuming and looking forward to getting those people who pulled off this stunt. 🔥 Fair enough, imo!

😱 what is going on with those fireworks 🤯 they literally ruined the whole match I'm so glad Ajax spoke up about this it's crazy that some people think it's okay to put lives at risk just for entertainment purposes. I've been to plenty of matches where there are pyrotechnics and nothing bad happens, but this was different - a referee had to abandon the game! 🤦‍♂️ the fact that they're condemning Groningen's display as "utterly outrageous" is pretty justified imo, can't we all just agree on safety first? 😊

🤔 I don't get why Groningen would set off fireworks behind one of the goals during a soccer match. What were they thinking? 😂 Didn't anyone check if it was gonna be safe or not? The whole stadium got affected, and now Ajax is all upset about it... seems reasonable to me 🙄.

And what's up with the match itself? Groningen scores first, but then Ajax just forgets about it and scores an equalizer before half-time. Not exactly thrilling if you ask me 😐. But hey, at least Real Madrid managed to get a 1-1 draw against Girona. That's more like it ⚽️.

And Norway's Viking won the league title? Congrats to them I guess 🎉. How exciting is that news, really? Not exactly breaking news if you ask me 😐.

omg what was going thru ajax minds lol they cant even control the pyro situation in their own stadium 🤯 like Groningen gets to just bring fireworks in mid game & ajax is all salty about it 😒 its not cool fam, we get it safety first 💡 but cmon can we just have a normal match for once?! 🎉
