'Exactly where we wanted to be': Canada hails NSL after inaugural season's glittering finish | Sophie Downey

Canadian Football League Makes Historic Mark After Debut Season

A triumphant conclusion marked the inaugural season of Canada's Northern Super League (NSL), with Vancouver Rise emerging as champions. The side defeated AFC Toronto 2-1 in front of a packed crowd of 12,429 spectators at BMO Field in Toronto.

The NSL has set a high bar for professional women's football in Canada, boasting a minimum wage of C$50,000 and an average salary of C$75,000 – the highest globally. The league also offers a comprehensive benefits package, creating opportunities for coaches, media, and players alike.

The inaugural season has been a resounding success, with over 275,000 tickets sold, placing Canada's league among the top five globally in terms of attendance. Revenue generated by the league stands at C$30 million, while partnerships with 16 organizations have further solidified its position. Digital content has also played a significant role, attracting over three million viewers across traditional broadcast channels.

"We're exactly where we wanted to be," said Diana Matheson, co-founder and former Canada international, in reference to the league's debut season. "We knew we were building from scratch, but with one of the best countries for supporting women's sport, we set high expectations – and I say we've met them."

Vancouver Rise captain Samantha Chang expressed her gratitude at being part of the historic league, stating that playing in the inaugural game and winning the first trophy feels "full circle" for the team.

As the league continues to grow and expand, plans are already underway to add seven new teams by 2027. The NSL is also set to participate in the Concacaf W Champions Cup, further cementing its position on the international stage.

The success of the NSL is a testament to the potential of professional women's football in Canada, with many expecting continued growth and investment in the years to come.

I mean... 12k people watching a game? That's crazy! 🀯 Back in my day, we were lucky to get 1/4 that crowd for a decent pub crawl. But I guess times have changed, right? The NSL is definitely giving the NFL and MLB a run for their money with those ticket sales. And $75k a year? That's like, old money πŸ˜‚. Reminds me of when I was playing beer league hockey and we'd all just throw cash on the table whenever someone scored... simpler times πŸ€ͺ

man I'm so hyped for this new Canadian Football League thing 🀩, it's about time we get some more competitive sports in this country, especially when it comes to women's football! 275k tickets sold is insane πŸ€‘, and $30m revenue? that's a win-win all around πŸ’Έ. I'm loving the fact that they're offering good salaries and benefits too, it's not just about the money though, but also about creating opportunities for people to grow and develop as coaches and media folks too. And let's be real, it's nice to see some Canadian pride on the field πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦, especially with all these new teams joining in 2027! The Concacaf W Champions Cup is a great addition too, it'll be awesome to see our girls representing Canada on the international stage 😊. I'm excited to see where this league goes from here and how it continues to support and grow women's football in Canada πŸ’ͺ

omg did u no canada just created its own womens footy league n it's already killin it!!! 🀩 275k tickets sold wow that's crazy! its awesome 2 c countries investin in womens sports & payin its players decent wages ($50k min wage lol) πŸ˜‚. i guess u could say canadian football is takin over the world πŸ˜‰. gotta love seein new leagues pop up n watch them succeed πŸŽ‰

🏈πŸ’ͺ OMG, I'm beyond excited about the Northern Super League (NSL) in Canada! It's amazing to see how far they've come since their debut season πŸŽ‰. I think it's awesome that they're offering a decent salary and benefits package – it's about time we see more financial support for women's sports πŸ’Έ.

I'm also loving the fact that they have such a huge following, with over 275k tickets sold! That's insane! And can we talk about how proud it is to see Diana Matheson and Samantha Chang speaking about their experiences? Women in football are truly making waves 🌊. I'm curious to see how this league will continue to grow and expand – adding seven new teams by 2027 sounds like a solid plan πŸ“ˆ.

One thing that's got me thinking, though, is what kind of impact this will have on the overall sports landscape in Canada? Will we start seeing more investment in women's leagues across other sports as well? πŸ€” Only time will tell!

I'M SO STOKED TO SEE CANADA GETTING IT RIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO PROFESSIONAL WOMEN'S FOOTBALL!!! πŸ™ŒπŸ’ͺ THE NSL IS A GAME CHANGER AND I LOVE THAT THEY'RE PAYING THEIR PLAYERS A MINIMUM OF $50,000 - THAT'S LIKE, REAL MONEY FOR REAL ATHLETES! πŸ’Έ AND THE ATTENDANCE FIGURES ARE THROUGH THE ROOF WITH OVER 275,000 TICKETS SOLD - THAT'S LIKE, WHOA! 😲 IT'S GREAT TO SEE DIANA MATHESON AND SAMANTHA CHANG GETTING RECOGNITION FOR THEIR HARD WORK AND DEDICATION. CANADA IS REALLY LIVING ITS BEST LIFE RIGHT NOW! 🌟

It's about time someone made some noise about this Canadian Football League πŸ€”! I mean, $30 million revenue is no joke, but let's not get too ahead of ourselves here... it's still a fraction of what the NFL makes in one season alone πŸ’Έ. And don't even get me started on those player salaries - C$75k? That's cute πŸ˜‚. In the US, we're used to seeing top players making upwards of $1 million or more per year. Still, I'll give them props for setting a high bar for pro women's football in Canada. The fact that they've already sold over 275k tickets is impressive, but let's see if they can sustain this momentum and actually make a dent in the international market 🀞

πŸ™ I'm so stoked for these young ladies out there chasing their dreams in sports. The money they're getting isn't bad either πŸ€‘ 50k minimum wage is a big deal, especially when you consider most part-time jobs are barely scraping by. And the benefits package? That's just icing on the cake 😊.

It's awesome to see Canada stepping up its game for women's football. We should be giving these ladies a round of applause for breaking barriers and paving their own paths. πŸ’ͺ The attendance numbers and revenue are mind-blowing – it's clear people are passionate about this sport, and that's what makes all the hard work worth it.

I do hope they keep pushing forward with adding new teams and expanding their reach. It'd be great to see more ladies getting involved in coaching and media too πŸ“Ί. All in all, I'm feeling pretty optimistic about the future of pro women's football in Canada πŸ‘

I'm still not convinced about this whole Northern Super League thing πŸ€”. Sure, they've made a pretty penny off 275k tickets sold (that's a lot of dough), but are we really prepared for a league that's moving so fast? I mean, adding 7 new teams by 2027 is a big undertaking – what about player burnout? And don't even get me started on the digital content and revenue streams... sounds like they're chasing a fancy tech bubble πŸ’Έ. Can we take a step back and assess whether this league is truly benefiting players and fans, or just lining the pockets of investors? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

idk why ppl r making such a big deal about this lol canada's got its own league now πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ what's next? are they gonna start calling it "hockey 2.0"? ⚽️ seriously though, C$50k min wage is insane for a female footballer in canada, i mean we pay our dudes like 100k+ and they get to do jack squat lol also i'm lowkey salty that afc toronto lost πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

OMG CANADA JUST KICKED IT INTO HIGH GEAR WITH THEIR NEW FOOTBALL LEAGUE!!! πŸš€πŸ’ͺ 275k TICKETS SOLD IS INSANE AND THE SALARIES ARE ON POINT WITH A MINIMUM OF $50K PER PLAYER! πŸ€‘ i mean, who wouldn't want to play pro football for that kind of cash?! πŸ’Έ and it's not just the players who are benefiting, the whole league is getting a sweet benefits package and partnerships with major orgs... this is a GAME CHANGER for womens sports in canada!!! πŸŽ‰

πŸ€” I'm loving this! Professional women's football in Canada is getting so much hype πŸš€, especially with those competitive salaries πŸ’Έ. C$50k minimum wage? That's insane for a start-up league πŸ˜‚. Can you imagine other countries trying to replicate that? The digital content is also crazy, 3 million viewers across channels? That's some serious engagement πŸ‘€. How are they handling the logistics of adding new teams and expanding their reach, though? The plans to participate in Concacaf W Champions Cup sound super ambitious 🌟. Do you think Canada has what it takes to become a top-tier women's football nation?

omg, I'm so stoked for Canadian women's footy 🀩! 275k tickets sold? That's insane! And C$30 million in revenue is no joke πŸ’Έ. The fact that they're offering a competitive salary and benefits package is also super appealing to players and coaches alike. I mean, who wouldn't want to play for a league that's making waves globally 🌊. And 16 partnerships with orgs? That's some serious growth πŸš€. I'm hyped to see what the future holds for the NSL! πŸ’ͺ

Yaaas! πŸ™Œ finally some good news about women's sports in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦. The fact that they're raking it in πŸ’Έ with a minimum wage of C$50k is lit πŸ”₯, and I'm so glad Diana Matheson & co are getting the recognition they deserve πŸ‘. It's time to keep pushing forward for equal pay & opportunities for all female athletes πŸ†πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” um I'm kinda impressed how far this Canadian women's football league has come in just one season? C$50k min wage and all that's pretty cool for a female sports league...I wonder what kind of sponsorship deals they got with 16 organizations lol did they have any challenges starting up the league or was it a smooth process πŸ€‘

I gotta say, I'm still not convinced about this Northern Super League business πŸ€”. Like, don't get me wrong, it's awesome that they're making a profit and all that jazz πŸ’Έ, but is it really necessary to have 16 organizations on board? It just seems like a bunch of corporate sponsorship deals to me πŸ“ˆ. And what about the environmental impact of all these games being played at stadiums? Not exactly the most eco-friendly thing in the world 🌎. Plus, I'm not sure how many of those "275k tickets sold" folks were actually locals... might be more tourists than Canadians showing up to support their team πŸ€‘. And don't even get me started on the cost of entry - $50k a year? That's some serious cash πŸ’Έ. Maybe they should focus on making it more accessible for regular folks instead of just catering to the wealthy πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

omg, 12k+ ppl at BMO Field watching the NSL match 🀯 that's insane!!! i'm so hyped for this league, C$30 mil revenue is straight fire πŸ’Έ and over 3 mil viewers on digital content? that's a lot of eyes on the beautiful game πŸ“Ί what's next? addin 7 new teams by 2027? πŸš€ can't wait to see more female athletes shine in Canada! πŸ’ͺ

OMG, can you even believe this 🀯?! The Canadian Football League just set a new standard for pro women's sports! πŸ’ͺ I mean, 275k tickets sold is straight fire πŸ”₯ and they're offering like, actual cash πŸ’Έ with a min wage of $50k? That's a total game-changer for players everywhere. And the benefits package? 🀩 Coaches and media are gonna get in on that too? I'm so here for it πŸ˜† The fact that they're setting the bar high is giving me all the feels πŸ’• This league is about to take over the world (or at least Canada πŸ˜‰)

🀩 I'm super stoked for the Canadian women's football league! It's amazing to see how fast it's grown and the opportunities it's created for players, coaches, and staff πŸ€‘ The fact that they're already making a profit and planning to add new teams shows that this is something special. πŸ’Έ I love that they're investing in their athletes with competitive salaries and benefits too πŸ’ͺ What's even more inspiring is the digital content aspect - it's great to see how far-reaching women's sports can be πŸ“ΊπŸ‘

canada's getting serious about women's football 🀩🏈 i mean 75k avg salary? that's insane! they gotta keep that momentum going tho, no time for complacency πŸ’ͺ what's next? more international matches? maybe even a rival league for the US? would love to see some competition πŸ‘€
