The once-grand residence of the late US Senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy is now on the market for the first time in over half a century, with a hefty price tag to match its prestige.

Kennedy purchased the 14th-floor co-op at 860 United Nations Plaza in 1965, when the building launched, for $68,000 plus an annual maintenance fee of around $6,500. The 2,000-square-foot three-bedroom, three-bath corner unit has remained largely untouched since then, with original marble in the baths and a vintage oven still intact.

"It has been relatively untouched for more than 50 years," said listing broker Mary Barbrack of Compass. "Buyers who care about architecture recognize these towers instantly - the [Wallace K.] Harrison and [Max] Abramovitz design, that bronze-and-glass curtain wall, and the soaring lobby make a striking impression."

The sleek mid-century chic spread boasts 48 feet of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the UN garden, offering breathtaking views of the East River. The kitchen still features its original appliances, although they aren't included in the listing images.

At the time Kennedy purchased the co-op, his wife Ethel and their nine kids resided on their family farm in McLean, Virginia. Just two years prior, Bobby's brother President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated, followed by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968.

Kennedy himself was killed during a campaign rally in Indianapolis just months later. "What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence or lawlessness," he urged his followers, advocating for love and compassion instead of revenge.

Today, the co-op is on the market for $1.79 million - more than 10 times its estimated value at the time it was purchased. The building's current maintenance fee stands at around $5,768.90 per month.

Potential buyers can expect to enjoy a range of amenities, including a concierge, doormen, a gym, and a rooftop deck with panoramic views of the city.
