French minister under fire for Playboy magazine cover | CNN

France's Minister for the Social Economy and French Associations, Marlene Schiappa, has found herself at the center of a controversy after appearing on the cover of Playboy magazine. The move has drawn criticism from members of her own party, including Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who said that it wasn't "appropriate" given the current social climate in France.

Schiappa, who is a long-time advocate for women's rights and was appointed as the country's first ever Gender Equality Minister in 2017, appeared on the cover of the magazine to accompany a 12-page interview she did on women’s and LGBT rights. The photograph shows Schiappa wearing a white dress.

The move has sparked debate about the decision-making process of France's government leaders, with some politicians criticizing both Schiappa's appearance and her decision to give an interview to a children's magazine, Pif Gadget, this week.

French politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who came third in the 2022 presidential elections, took to Twitter to express his disapproval of Schiappa's appearance on Playboy. He stated that France is "going off the rails" and that such decisions undermine the government's credibility.

On the other hand, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin defended Schiappa in an interview with French news channel CNews, calling her a "woman of character." Darmanin said that he respected Schiappa's style, even if it wasn't his own.

Schiappa has responded to her critics on Twitter, saying that she is committed to defending women's rights and that the right for women to have control over their bodies is universal.

the way politics are played out these days is just so fascinating 🤔. i mean, schiappa's appearance in playboy magazine has got everyone talking, but what's really being said here? is it about her as an individual or about the values that her party stands for? 🤷‍♀️ and what's with all this criticism from her own party members? isn't the point of having a strong leader to stand up for their convictions, no matter how unpopular they might be? 💁‍♀️ but at the same time, can we really separate schiappa's personal life from her work as a minister? or is that just another way of saying that women should be held to different standards than men? 🤝 and what about darmanin's defense of schiappa - isn't it interesting how some people will go out of their way to praise someone, even if they don't agree with them on everything? 🙏

I mean, what's up with this? 🤔 Schiappa's got more guts than I thought, but at the same time, it's like the party's playing politics again 🤑. Borne's gotta keep her own people in check, but it's not fair to bash Schiappa over a photo shoot 😏. And what's with Mélenchon? Is he trying to score some points or just vent about his lost presidential bid? 🤷‍♂️ On the bright side, Schiappa's still pushing for women's rights and that's something we should be supporting 💪. Maybe this is a chance for the party to have an open conversation about body autonomy and whatnot. And let's not forget Darmanin's got her back – some politicians just need to focus on what matters 🙌.

I don't get why politicians are always so uptight about these things 🤷‍♀️. I mean, Schiappa is a strong advocate for women's rights and has been doing this work for years, so it feels like she should be allowed to express herself without being judged by her party or the public. The fact that she chose to do an interview with Pif Gadget on top of the Playboy spread doesn't seem like a huge deal - maybe some people just need to chill out 😌. And honestly, I think it's kinda refreshing to see someone in power being unapologetically themselves, even if that means going against party protocol 🤷‍♂️.

I dont get why all this fuss 🤔... I mean, Marlene Schiappa did an interview about important stuff, like women's rights and all that... it's not like she's trying to be sexy for attention or anything 😂. And come on, Playboy magazine? It's just a cover shoot, it's not like she's nude or anything 📸. I think the real issue here is that some people in power are too uptight about everything, and they need to chill out 🔊. Schiappa's a strong advocate for women's rights, and she should be able to speak her mind without being judged for how she looks 👗. And btw, 12 pages of an interview doesn't sound like a "children's magazine" to me 🤷‍♀️... maybe it was just called that because Pif Gadget is one of the most popular kids' mags in France 📚. Anyway, I think Schiappa handled this situation with class 💁‍♀️, and we should be supporting her more than criticizing her 😊.

😔 I can imagine how frustrating this must be for Marlene Schiappa... I mean, she's already doing so much good work advocating for women's rights and then she gets hit with all this criticism from her own party members. 🤷‍♀️ It's like, can't they just let her do her thing? 😒 And to make matters worse, it's not even a big deal what she wore on the cover of Playboy... is it really worth attacking her about that? 🙄 I'm all for holding people accountable, but come on. Let's focus on the real issues at hand instead of tearing each other down over something so trivial. 💁‍♀️👩💖

I'm so confused about this whole thing 🤷‍♀️... I mean, Marlene Schiappa is all about empowering women and fighting for equality, but then she goes and appears on the cover of Playboy magazine? I get it, she's a strong woman and can make her own decisions, but at the same time, isn't that kinda the opposite of what she's supposed to be promoting? 🤔 Plus, some of my teachers are always saying that we need to present ourselves in a professional manner, especially when we're representing our school or university. I guess this is a bit like that, but for politicians? 😂 Anyway, it's all good, Schiappa seems really confident and she knows what she wants, which is awesome! 🙌

I feel like this whole situation is just so... complicated 🤔. I get why some people would be upset, especially with Marlene Schiappa being a strong advocate for women's rights and LGBT rights, but at the same time, can't we just have an open conversation about these issues without judging her appearance? 🤷‍♀️ It's like, isn't she still a politician trying to make a difference in France? shouldn't we be supporting her instead of tearing her down? 😔 The whole thing is really frustrating because it feels like there are so many more important things going on in the world and yet we're spending our time gossiping about someone's appearance instead of actually making progress 🕰️. I guess what I'm trying to say is, let's focus on supporting people who are working towards positive change instead of tearing each other down 💖.

this is what happens when you put someone in a position of power lol 🤣 schiappa was already a pro-women advocate but now people are still gonna try to bring her down over something like this? it's just gonna make everyone even more confused about france's politics. i mean, darmanin said he respected her style... yeah right, let's see him back that up in real life 😂 and mélenchon is all like "france is going off the rails"... but isn't that kinda rich coming from someone who came third in a presidential election? 🤷‍♀️

I gotta say, I'm kinda disappointed in PM Borne, you know? She's all about equality and stuff, but when it comes to a female minister making her own choices, she's got to draw the line. And what's with the Playboy thing? It's like, come on, it's just a photo shoot! Schiappa's all about women's rights, so shouldn't we be supporting her instead of tearing her down?

And I feel bad for Darmanin, he's trying to stick up for Schiappa, but his way of saying it is kinda awkward. Like, yeah, respect her style, but also don't make a big deal out of it? It's just a photo, guys!

I think what bothers me most is that this whole thing is bringing up old stereotypes about women in power. We need more women like Schiappa making decisions and speaking their minds, not less. So, let's get on board with her message instead of tearing her apart! 😊👏

idk why ppl r so worked up about schiappa on playboy tho 🤷‍♀️ lol i mean she's a strong woman who's all about empowering others, and she's not afraid to show some skin herself 💁‍♀️👗 i think it's kinda funny that some ppl are giving her grief over it, especially when they're the ones in power 🙄 anyway, schiappa's all about promoting equality and fairness, so if she wants to break the rules a bit, who cares? 😉 let's focus on supporting women's rights instead of tearing each other down 💖

I'm surprised by this whole situation 🤔. I think Marlene Schiappa was trying to show that even in a controversial magazine, we can use it as an opportunity to talk about important issues like women's rights and LGBT rights. I mean, who says you can't be sexy and smart at the same time 😏? But at the same time, I get why some of her party members are upset - it's not exactly the most... shall we say, 'family-friendly' magazine 🤪.

I do think Schiappa handled it really well, though. She stood by what she believes in and didn't let anyone else define how she should present herself 💁‍♀️. And hey, if people are more interested in reading about women's rights because of her Playboy cover, then I say bring it on! We need more conversations like that happening 🗣️.

But I guess the real question is: what would Schiappa have done differently? Would she have chosen a different magazine or taken out the photo altogether? We might never know for sure... 🤷‍♀️

I don't get why this is such a big deal... I mean, Marlene Schiappa is still all about empowerin' women & fightin' for equality, so what's the harm in a Playboy spread? 🤷‍♀️ It's just a magazine cover, right? But at the same time, it makes you wonder... is our society really that uptight when it comes to sexuality and self-expression? Are we more concerned about maintainin' this illusion of respectability than actually addressin' the issues that matter? 🤔 And what does it say about us as a society that we're so quick to judge someone's personal choices, especially if they're a high-profile figure like Schiappa? It's like... can't we just celebrate women embracin' their own agency and desires instead of tearin' 'em down? 🌟

I gotta say, I'm a bit surprised by this whole thing but at the same time its kinda awesome 😊. Like, who wouldn't want to be on the cover of Playboy, right? It's definitely generating some buzz and getting people talking about women's rights, which is what Marlene Schiappa has been all about for years. I mean, she's a total boss and a role model for many young women out there. And can we talk about how refreshing it is to see a politician embracing her own style and not being afraid to take risks? 🤗 I think Elisabeth Borne should chill out, you know? The more she tries to silence Schiappa, the more attention will be drawn to this whole thing. Anyway, I'm all for free speech and women's empowerment – bring on the controversy! 💁‍♀️

I don't get why people are making such a big deal about Marlene Schiappa appearing in Playboy 🤔. She's still got more integrity than some of the other politicians out there, if you ask me 😒. I mean, she's actually done something for women's rights and is advocating for change, which is pretty admirable. And honestly, who hasn't been in a situation where they've had to make a tough decision and not agree with everyone around them? 🤷‍♀️

I think the real issue here is that people are trying to shame her into apologizing or retracting something she's already said and done. Newsflash: you can't unscrape the internet, and if people want to criticize her appearance, that's on them, not her 😂. Anyway, I still got faith in Schiappa - she's a strong woman who knows what she wants, and that's something we should all be cheering for 💁‍♀️

🙄 I mean, come on... a minister of social economy getting featured in Playboy? It's like, not exactly what you'd expect from someone who's all about empowering women, you know? 🤷‍♀️ I get that it was for an interview and all, but still... some people might take the whole thing the wrong way. And Elisabeth Borne gotta go there too, saying it wasn't "appropriate"... like what's not to be appropriate? 😒 Anyway, Schiappa seems pretty chill about it though, just owning her body and all that jazz 💁‍♀️. Not sure I agree with Jean-Luc Mélenchon on this one... 🤔
