Great Ormond Street surgeon harmed 94 children, review finds

Independent Review Reveals Alarming Abuse of Trust by Great Ormond Street Surgeon

A shocking review has revealed that nearly 100 children suffered harm under the care of a Great Ormond Street surgeon, Yaser Jabbar. The 789 children treated by Jabbar between 2017 and 2022 were found to have been subjected to abuse of trust in various forms, resulting in severe physical harm.

According to the review, 36 children suffered severe injuries, including delayed diagnosis or failed surgery, while another 39 patients experienced moderate harm, such as unnecessary general anesthesia. A further 19 patients were mildly harmed. The investigation also revealed that Jabbar had operated on at least 91 of these children.

Gosh hospital has promised to take significant steps to prevent similar incidents in the future, including implementing changes to staff training and review processes for patients. The trust's chief executive, Matthew Shaw, expressed his "profoundly sorry" for the harm caused by Jabbar's actions and committed to making the necessary changes to protect current and future patients.

However, critics argue that the review was inadequate in involving families who had been affected by Jabbar's treatment, leaving them feeling ignored once again. Law firm Leigh Day has confirmed that it is representing some of the families, describing their experiences as "devastating" and urging anyone affected to reach out for support.

Regulatory bodies have pledged to take immediate action, including launching an independent investigation into the management and culture of Great Ormond Street hospital. The Department of Health and Social Care has also promised to work with NHS England to implement all safety recommendations outlined by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2023 to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.

The shocking case highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability within the healthcare system, particularly when it comes to patient safety and trust. As one lawyer noted, "families need to be involved" – instead they were treated as peripheral to the learning and remediation process.

Wow 🤯 19 children got mildly harmed lol. 91 kids operated on by this guy? What's going on at Great Ormond Street hospital 😱. They're promising changes but law firms are saying families feel ignored... that's messed up 🤕. NHS England needs to do more to prevent these incidents and families need to be involved in the learning process 💔.

This is so messed up 🤕 100+ kids hurt by a surgeon... that's just insane. I mean, you've got to give the hospital credit for acknowledging their mistakes and promising to make changes, but I'm not convinced it'll be enough. They're still gonna have to do a lot more than just retrain staff to prevent this from happening again.

I'm also kinda annoyed they didn't involve the families of the kids who were affected sooner... I can see how that would be really frustrating for them. It's like, you've gotta put family first in situations like this, not just stick with what you know and figure it out later.

OMG 😱 what's going on with those doctors at Great Ormond Street ???! I'm still trying to wrap my head around it - 100+ kids harmed by one surgeon's abuse of trust ?? That's just... wow. I feel so sorry for the families affected, it's like they're being treated all over again. And now there's a whole investigation going on, but I gotta ask, why wasn't this review more involved with the families from the start? 🤔 They should've been at the table, discussing ways to prevent this from happening in the future. Law firms are right, these people need support and justice. 💕

🤕 my heart goes out to those poor kids who went through this 💔 jabbar's actions are just horrific & it's not okay that 91 kids had to go through his surgery & still got hurt 🤦‍♀️ hospitals have a responsibility to keep patients safe & it seems like they failed miserably here 👎 what's even more disturbing is that families were ignored during the review process, it's unacceptable that their voices weren't heard 🗣️ safety measures need to be put in place so this never happens again 💯

this is just awful 😔... how can u have a surgeon who's supposed 2 help ppl recover & cause them so much harm? it's not just about the number of kids who got hurt, but also about the trust that was broken 💔. i feel for all those families who've had to deal w/ this aftermath... it's like they're still waiting 4 answers 🤷‍♀️. regulatory bodies need 2 do more than just promise changes, they need 2 take action now 💪. transparency & accountability r key in preventin' this kinda abuse of trust from happenin' again 📝.

Ugh this is so messed up 🤕 I remember when my little cousin was treated by a specialist at that hospital and everything seemed fine... but now I'm not sure if I should even trust the docs there 😩 The fact that nearly 100 kids were harmed under one surgeon's care is just heartbreaking. And what really bothers me is that some families didn't get to share their stories or be involved in the investigation... it's like they just disappeared 🤐 Something needs to change ASAP so this never happens again 💯

this is just disgusting 🤯 the fact that nearly 100 kids suffered harm under this surgeon's care is already a nightmare, but what really gets me is how the review was handled... like, families who were affected are basically left out of the loop? it's all well and good for hospitals to promise changes, but what does that even look like in practice? it feels like they're just going through the motions to avoid actual accountability 🙅‍♂️ and that's not okay at all. we need real transparency and a commitment to fixing these systemic issues, not just more empty promises 💔
