Here's how to still eat healthy at the airport and on a plane

Flying High on Healthy Eats: Tips for Navigating Air Travel with Your Appetite Intact

When it comes to flying, many of us are accustomed to munching on bland airline snacks like pretzels and cookies. However, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is calling for a healthier approach. "I would love some better snacks," he said in a recent interview. "I would love a little healthier snack on the airplane." But how can we eat nutritious food while soaring through the skies?

The Problem with Airline Snacks
Pretzels and cookies may be convenient, but they're not exactly the healthiest options. Pretzels are high in sodium and refined carbs, leaving you feeling unsatisfied soon after consumption. Biscoff cookies, on the other hand, are loaded with added sugars and saturated fat – although they do have some advantages over Oreos and Chips Ahoy!.

The Solution: Eat Nuts for a Protein Boost
While peanuts may be off-limits due to allergies, many airlines still offer other types of nuts. Opting for unsalted options can help manage sodium intake, especially for those with high blood pressure or medical conditions. As long as you're not allergic, nuts like almonds or walnuts provide a welcome protein boost.

Stay Hydrated and Caffeine-Free
Drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your flight is crucial due to the low humidity levels in airline cabins. Aim for 8 ounces of water per hour of flight to avoid dehydration and potential jet lag. When it comes to beverages, steer clear of alcoholic drinks, which can disrupt sleep, and caffeinated drinks, like coffee or soda, which may exacerbate anxiety.

Bring Your Own Food (BYO)
The best – and most cost-effective – option for healthy eating on the plane is to pack your own food. Registered dietitian Andy De Santis swears by bringing chicken sandwiches on whole-grain bread, while health editor Ally Head recommends a container full of carrot sticks, olives, cheese cubes, spinach salad, and pumpernickel bread.

Tips for Packing Healthy Airborne Snacks

• Bring solid snacks like nuts, dried fruit, or sandwiches in your carry-on luggage.
• Avoid wrapping food in aluminum foil to avoid setting off security alarms.
• Pack an empty water bottle to stay hydrated during the flight.
• Choose liquid containers of 3.4-ounces or less for security purposes.

By following these tips and packing healthy snacks, you can navigate air travel without sacrificing your dietary goals. So next time you're soaring through the skies, don't settle for bland airline snacks – bring a balanced meal to keep you flying high!

I'm telling ya, dude... 🤔 I just love the idea of having healthier snacks on planes, but at the same time, I'm also like "wait, aren't we just gonna get bored with all that healthy stuff?" 🙄 You know what's convenient? Pretzels and cookies! They're easy to grab and go. But, I guess they're not the best for us health-wise... 🤷‍♀️ So yeah, let's bring our own food on planes and stuff, but what about when we get hungry mid-flight? Can't just be like "oh, I'll just have a handful of almonds"... unless you count having an empty water bottle as healthy... 🤪

I mean, think about it... we're basically prisoners on a plane with limited options, yet we still manage to pay top dollar for the privilege of flying. It's wild that they even call it a "snack" when it's really just some mass-produced, processed crap. I guess what's crazy is how much we're willing to compromise our health for the sake of convenience. 🤯

But in all seriousness, it makes you wonder about our relationship with food and travel. Are we truly hungry on a plane, or are we just looking forward to the next meal? And what does that say about our eating habits when we can't even get a decent snack on an airplane? It's like, we're so used to relying on fast food and takeout that we've forgotten how to eat for real. 🤔

So yeah, bringing your own food is key, but let's not forget the bigger issue here: our collective lack of self-care when it comes to eating. We should be asking ourselves if our love of flying is worth the compromise on our health. I mean, what's more important? The thrill of soaring through the skies or taking care of our bodies? 🤷‍♂️

🍴🛫️ I think it's about time we start looking at air travel as an opportunity to nourish our bodies instead of just fueling up on junk food. Those airline snacks are literally not doing anyone any favors! 🤢 With a little planning and creativity, you can bring your own healthy goodies on the plane and stay satisfied throughout your flight. I love that some people are already experimenting with packing sandwiches, nuts, and dried fruits – it's all about finding what works for you! And let's be real, staying hydrated is key, so don't even think about reaching for a soda or coffee drink during the flight 😅. With these tips, you can enjoy your flight without compromising on your dietary goals 🛬.

omg yeah!!! i totally agree with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on this one! it's like, we deserve better than those sad pretzels and cookies! 🍿👎 seriously though, nuts are a great option for protein and staying hydrated is SO important while flying! i always bring my own water bottle on the plane and pack some healthy snacks in my carry-on too. like, have you tried bringing dried fruit or energy bars? they're perfect for long flights! 🍓🏃‍♀️

ummm come on dude eating almonds and carrot sticks on a 5 hour flight is like so boring 🤣 what about pizza or sushi? airlines should def serve those and charge extra like normal restaurants. also why cant we just buy healthy stuff from the airport shops instead of making our own?

omg u guys i'm literally so hyped that transportation sec sean duffy is talkin bout changin up those lame airline snacks 🤯 like who doesn't love a good carb overload on a plane tho? 😂 anyways the tip about bringin ur own food aka byo is total game changer 🎮 i packed some energy balls and trail mix last time i flew and it was literally the best flight ever 🛫️ gotta try those other ideas like nuts & sandwiches 2 👌

man... have u ever thought that its not about the food we eat at 30k feet but its about the choices we make before? like, how many times has ur airport experience been ruined by some stale cookie or boring sandwich. maybe thats not the airline's fault, maybe its our own mindset... do we really need snacks on planes to feel satisfied? what does that say about us?

🤩🍴 I'm so down with this idea 🙌! Who doesn't love a good airplane snack? 🤔 But seriously, pretzels and cookies are just not doing it for me anymore 😒. Nuts like almonds or walnuts are such a great option 🥜💪, and they're easy to pack in your carry-on too 📦.

I'm also loving the idea of bringing your own food (BYO) on planes 🛫️! It's just so much better for you than relying on airline snacks. And let's be real, who wants to deal with a cramped economy seat when you could have a comfy snack time 🤪? Just make sure to pack some water too 💧, or you might end up feeling parched mid-flight 😓.

I'm all about that healthy eating life 🥗, and this is just the perfect way to keep it going even on long flights ✈️. No more boring airline snacks for me! I'll be packing my own snacks in no time 🎁! 👍

omg i feel me like i had the worst flight experience ever last month 🤯 i was on this super long haul and they only offered these tiny little sandwiches that were literally just 2 slices of bread with some weird sauce in between . i swear my stomach was growling so loud it could've woken up the whole plane 😂 anyhoo after reading this article i'm totes packing my own food next time 🎉 like, what's wrong with airlines?! don't they care about their passengers' health at all? i've also been experiencing these crazy headaches since flying 🤕 so maybe it's because of the air pressure or something 🤷‍♀️
