Houston Food Bank Urges Volunteers and Spanish Speakers to Join Phone Bank During Holiday Season
The Houston Food Bank is calling on volunteers to answer calls from food-eligible individuals seeking holiday meal assistance, with a special focus on recruiting Spanish speakers to join the effort.
Volunteers will play a crucial role in registering individuals by phone to receive holiday food boxes. While no prior experience is necessary, staff will provide a 15-minute training session before each shift to ensure volunteers are equipped to handle the task. The Houston Food Bank has identified an urgent need for Spanish-speaking volunteers to help address the growing demand.
Shifts are available from Monday, December 1 through Wednesday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and can be signed up for on the ABC13 Share Your Holidays page. To volunteer, simply create a profile and look for red shifts. The Houston Food Bank website will also have a reservation map where individuals can follow the instructions to register.
Those in need of a food box can register online through the Houston Food Bank's website, but be aware that demand is expected to be extremely high during this time period, potentially leading to lengthy wait times.
In addition to volunteering, donations are also welcome and can be made online or by texting "SYH2025" to 71777. All donations will go towards supporting the Houston Food Bank's programs and services, which provide essential support to those in need during the holiday season.
