How Mortal Kombat (and moral panic) changed the gaming world

Mortal Kombat's 90s Revival Sparks Nostalgia for a bygone Era of Video Game Violence

In December 1993, then-Democratic senator Joe Lieberman took aim at the video game industry's supposed corruption during a congressional hearing. The target was Midway's Mortal Kombat, a fighting game infamous for its graphic violence and "fatalities." At the time, gamers and developers alike were caught off guard by the fervor surrounding the title.

Lieberman's ire was sparked when he claimed that Mortal Kombat promoted violent tendencies in children. The senator's words tapped into a growing cultural anxiety about video games' influence on minors. This phenomenon, known as moral panic, has since become a familiar narrative in gaming culture.

Fast-forward to 2023 and the release of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, an anthology of classic titles that showcased how far the series has come. For many gamers, revisiting the original arcade experience was akin to witnessing a relic from another era – one where digital visuals were low-resolution and digitized, while fatalities were more gruesome and entertaining than horrifying.

Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, would later reveal that his team drew inspiration from popular 80s horror films like Bloodsport and RoboCop. The game's success was also fueled by the growing fascination with graphic violence in video games during the early 1990s.

The controversy surrounding Mortal Kombat led to a major turning point for the gaming industry. Sega exploited this sentiment, allowing Mega Drive owners access to full, unedited versions of the arcade game, which ultimately proved more lucrative than censored iterations.

Meanwhile, Nintendo sought to distance itself from such content by removing fatalities and toning down the blood to grey "sweat." This strategy bolstered its image as a family-friendly brand.

Today, Mortal Kombat serves as a reminder of a pivotal moment in gaming history when the stakes were high, and the industry was still navigating the consequences of emerging technologies.

The infamous hearings have become an integral part of gaming lore, symbolizing the tension between creative freedom and societal concerns about media content.

While recent controversies like Doom and Fortnite's portrayal by the media might seem more relatable to younger audiences today, they pale in comparison to the original firestorm surrounding Mortal Kombat.

That moment set the stage for an industry shift toward a new generation of gamers – teenagers rather than children – as well as the growth of graphic, violent content in popular titles.

omg did u no that joe lieberman was all about savin america from us gamers back in 93? 🤣 like what even is the diff between beheadin ur friend and watchin an 80s movie tho? 😂 i mean idk if u can relate or wut but it seems like mortal kombat was kinda ahead of its time in terms of makin us all edgy gamers who dont care about no "moral panic" 🎮💥

I'm totally with the haters who said that Mortal Kombat was corrupting kids back in the day 🤪👊. I mean, come on, it's not like it was a video game marathon every weekend or anything... but for real though, the whole thing felt super superficial. Joe Lieberman's all-caps warnings about "violent tendencies" and "corruption"... please, that guy just didn't get it 💁‍♀️👎.

I'm still hyped about the old Mortal Kombat games 😎 they were like the ultimate rush back in the day! I mean, who didn't want to execute their opponents and get that sweet "fatalities" 🤯. It's crazy to think how far the series has come, but at the same time, it's awesome to see the nostalgia factor bring people together again.

I'm loving the retro vibes of the Kollection too 💻 it feels like a blast from the past, you know? The blood and gore might seem cheesy now, but back then it was all about the shock value 🤪. And let's be real, some of those fatalities are still iconic to this day 😂.

It's wild how much of an impact Mortal Kombat had on the gaming industry 👊. I mean, Sega took a risk by releasing the unedited versions and it paid off in the long run 💸. Nintendo, on the other hand, played it safe and it helped them maintain their family-friendly image 🙌.

Anyway, I'm stoked to see Mortal Kombat getting the love it deserves again 🤩. The infamous hearings are definitely a part of gaming history, but they also show how far we've come in terms of accepting more mature content 👍.

🤯 Still can't believe how intense it was back then! People were like "kids are gonna copy this" and freak out, lol 😂 I remember playing Mortal Kombat on my Sega Genesis with friends at sleepovers, and we'd all be like "Fatality, dude!" 🤣 We didn't think twice about it, just thought it was cool. And yeah, Ed Boon's inspirations from 80s horror movies totally show in the game. The original arcade experience is still so nostalgic, but now it's like a relic of a bygone era 🚀

I'm still not convinced that we need all this graphic violence in our games 🤔. I mean, Mortal Kombat was cool back in the day, but now it's just a bit too much for my taste 😒. I remember playing those old games with my friends and we were all about the thrill of competition, not maiming each other online 💀. And don't even get me started on the fatalities - who thought that was funny? 🤪 They're just a bunch of over-the-top gore that's more likely to gross out kids than challenge them to be better players.

I also think it's kinda sad that the gaming industry has become so focused on shock value and controversy, rather than creating engaging gameplay experiences that appeal to everyone. I mean, can't we have some fun with our games without resorting to gratuitous violence and gore? 🤷‍♂️ I'm all for a good challenge or puzzle-solving, but let's not forget what made gaming great in the first place: good old-fashioned competition and camaraderie 💪.

I'm so glad we've come full circle back to the 90s and the epic fail that was Joe Lieberman's moral panic 😂. It's hilarious how something as straightforwardly over-the-top as Mortal Kombat sparked a firestorm of controversy that's still being referenced today. Like, who needs actual substance when you can just go after video games, right? 🤣 Anyway, I'm glad the original game is getting some love again – it's amazing to see how far the series has come (and how ridiculous it was in its youth). Ed Boon's horror movie inspirations are on point though, because who doesn't love a good dose of gratuitous violence with their virtual fighting? 💀

lol can u believe it's been 30+ years since that congressional hearing about mortal kombat?! 🤯 i remember playing the original game with my mates back in the day and we thought we were so edgy for throwing in those "fatalities" 😎. but now, looking back, it's wild to think about how much of a cultural phenomenon that game became.

i'm glad they're releasing this legacy collection, though – it's crazy to see how far the series has come (or stayed, lol) 😂. and ed boon's statement about drawing inspiration from 80s horror films? genius! 🎥. i mean, who else but a group of crazy gamers would think to make games that let you rip someone's arms off or stuff? 💀.

anyway, the whole thing is just fascinating – like, how did we even get here? 🤔 from censored versions on mega drive to today's graphic violence and controversy... it's wild. but yeah, i guess that hearing was a major turning point for the gaming industry, and we're still feeling the effects of it today 💥.

omg did you see that old vid from 93 where joe lieberman is all like "mortal kombat is corrupting our kids" lol what a throwback 🤣 i mean its wild how gaming evolved to be more mature and edgy but also how it sparked this moral panic back then. its crazy to think about how sega was like "hey let's make the unedited version available" and made more money off of it 😂 and nintendo was all like "we're gonna tone it down for the little ones". anyhoo i think its cool how mortal kombat is still going strong today 🎮💥

I'm low-key obsessed with this Mortal Kombat revival 🤯! Like, can you imagine playing those classic games again on PC or console? The nostalgia is real 🔥! I mean, who didn't want to throw Scorpion's spear at Sub-Zero back in the day? 😂 But for real though, it's crazy how much influence Mortal Kombat had on the gaming industry. Like, it was one of the first games to push boundaries and make us question what was acceptable in a game 🤔.

It's also wild to think about how the gaming industry has come full circle. We're seeing more graphic violence and mature content in recent games, but at the same time, we're still debating whether it's too much or not enough 😅. Mortal Kombat will always be a reminder of that pivotal moment when the stakes were high, and the industry was figuring out its place in society 💥.

Anyway, I'm hyped to see what other retro games get the Legacy treatment 🎮! Who knows what other classics will be brought back to life? 😄

omg i was so down w/ mortal kombat back in the day 🤯👊 like who didn't have friends over and play it till 4am? 😂 my dad actually took me to see joe lieberman testify at that congressional hearing and i was like totally confused why anyone would care about "fatalities" lol 😂 idk if i agree w/ ed boon saying the game drew inspiration from horror films tho, didn't he just make stuff up to get away w/ more violence? 🤷‍♀️ anyway its crazy how much nostalgia is around this now 🎮💥

I feel like we're still reeling from that whole gaming controversy back in '93 🤯♂️. I mean, who would've thought that Mortal Kombat's fatalities would become a thing? 😅 It's crazy to think about how that game sparked this massive debate about violence in media and the impact it had on the gaming industry as a whole.

But, for real though, it's wild to see how far the series has come 🤩. From those grainy old graphics to the high-octane action we have today, it's like night and day ⚡️. And, you know what? I think it's dope that Ed Boon and the crew drew inspiration from some sick 80s horror flicks 💀👻.

The thing is, though, that controversy often sets the stage for innovation 🌟. The whole "censorship vs creative freedom" debate might've been intense back in the day, but it paved the way for us to have even more mature content in games today 🔥. So, in a weird way, I think we owe Mortal Kombat a debt of gratitude 😊.

It's all about perspective, you know? What was once seen as shocking or taboo might now be just another day at the office 🤔. But, hey, being able to look back on it and laugh is what matters most, right? 😂

I'm low-key obsessed with the new Mortal Kombat collection 🤯! Like, who wouldn't want to relive the nostalgia of those old-school fatalities 💀? I feel like we're still seeing the effects of that 'moral panic' back in the 90s 😂, but in a good way. It's crazy to think about how games have evolved (and sometimes devolved 😉) since then.

I mean, can you imagine if Joe Lieberman was still going on about this stuff today? 🙄 We'd be like, "Dude, we're adults now, we can handle some violence" 😎. And Ed Boon's inspiration from 80s horror films is SO cool 🔥. I'm definitely gonna go revisit some of those old games and see what all the fuss was about.

It's wild to think that Mortal Kombat played a major role in shaping the gaming industry into what it is today 🤯. From Sega's unedited versions to Nintendo's more family-friendly approach, it's all part of gaming history 📚. Let's give it up for Ed Boon and the original team – they brought us some serious heat 🔥!

Man... remember those old-school arcades? 😆 They had that sick smell of sweat and ozone all over 'em, ya know? Mortal Kombat back then was like a wild west show - you never knew what would happen next! 💥 The Fatalities were so iconic, it's crazy to think they're still just as lit today 🤯. And can we talk about the controversy surrounding it for a sec? 😂 Like, Joe Lieberman thought he could just swoop in and censor it like that? What's wrong with a little blood and guts, right? 🤷‍♂️ It was all part of what made those games so epic, you feel me? 💥

omg i remember playing mortal kombat on my cousin's n64 and being like woah that fatality was so sick 🤯! but for real tho it's crazy how the game sparked this whole moral panic thing back in the 90s. i think it's wild how ed boon and co drew inspiration from those 80s horror flicks and turned it into a whole new level of gaming. it's like they knew exactly what people wanted back then lol. anyway, it's dope to see how mortl kombat has come full circle and still remains one of the most iconic fighting games out there 🥊👏

Mortal Kombat's revival got me thinking... 90s were a whole different time when it came to video games. I mean, who needs all this fancy graphics and realistic violence? The low-res stuff was actually kinda charming back then 🙄. And don't even get me started on the fatalities – they were just plain weird 😂. Nowadays, I feel like every game is trying to outdo each other in terms of gore and shock value. Where's the fun in that? I mean, I'm not saying it's all bad... some of these new games are actually pretty cool 🤔... but sometimes I wish we could just go back to the good old days when gaming was more about having a good time than trying to be edgy 😐.

I'm totally loving this retro gaming vibe 🎮👾. The more I think about it, the more I realize that Mortal Kombat was kinda like the wild child of the 90s gaming scene - nobody saw what was coming and it just blew up 💥. And you know what's crazy? We're still dealing with the fallout from that controversy today 🤯. It's wild to think about how far gaming has come, but at the same time, I can see why some people would be concerned about all this graphic violence and whatnot. Do you guys think we've lost sight of what makes games "fun" in the process?

man I just saw this thread and I'm like totally out of the loop 🤯 what's with all the nostalgia for Mortal Kombat? I mean I remember playing it back in the day but I never really thought about how it sparked a whole controversy thingy. Like, I get that some ppl were worried about kids being influenced by violence but come on, it was just a game 🙄. And now they're all like revisiting the original arcade experience and whatnot. I'm good, I'll stick to playing newer games 😊.

lol what's with all the nostalgia 🤣 i remember playing mortal kombat at arcades back in the day my friends and i would spend hours trying to get that one fatality lol those special moves were so satisfying 😎 but for real tho it's wild how a game can spark such controversy and change the industry forever.

🤯 "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." 😒 The gaming industry has been doing a lot of talking about its past mistakes and how it's grown from them 🙏. But let's be real, some games are just so darn fun you can't help but play 'em, no matter what the critics say 😅.
