Illinois High School Association Reschedules State Championship Football Games
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced a change in plans for its postponed Class 5A and 6A football state championship games, shifting the original Saturday schedule to Tuesday. The Class 5A game between Providence and St. Francis will now take place at Hancock Stadium on Illinois State University's campus at 3 p.m., with the Class 6A contest between Fenwick and East St. Louis following at 6 p.m.
Tickets purchased in advance will still be honored for both games, providing a sense of normalcy as the association navigates an unprecedented situation.
However, the rescheduling process is far from complete. The IHSA's Executive Director Craig Anderson noted that "there are still some logistical hurdles to clear" regarding the rescheduled Class 7A and 8A state championship games, which were postponed due to Illinois State University's campus closure on Saturday.
Anderson acknowledged that this postponement marks a historic moment in the state playoffs, with all teams in Classes 5A, 6A, 7A, and 8A being informed of their new scheduling arrangements. The IHSA expressed its appreciation for the patience and understanding of the schools and communities involved, as it works to find the best and safest solution to reschedule these contests and crown state champions.
With only a few days left in the month, the association hopes to finalize the Class 7A and 8A scheduling by Saturday evening.
