Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has confirmed the seizure of a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker, known as the Talara, in the Strait of Hormuz. According to state media, Iranian forces intercepted the vessel for allegedly carrying an illegal consignment, and it was taken to Iranian waters following a court order.
The operation aimed to "protect Iran's national interests and resources." The Talara was reportedly carrying 30,000 tons of petrochemical products when it was seized on Friday. A private security firm described the assault as involving three small boats, while US Central Command acknowledged that the ship was seized after being boarded by IRGC forces via helicopter.
Iran has faced growing criticism for its actions in the region, following a 12-day war with Israel in June and recent limpet mine attacks on vessels that damaged tankers in 2019. The country has also been blamed for a drone attack on an Israeli-linked oil tanker that killed two European crew members in 2021.
The seizure of the Talara comes as tensions between Iran and the West continue to escalate, with Tehran having long threatened to close off the Strait of Hormuz, which is the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of all traded oil passes. The US Navy has long patrolled the region to keep the waterways open.
In related incidents, Iranian forces had previously seized two Greek tankers and held them until November last year. In April this year, Iran also seized a Portuguese-flagged cargo ship, MSC Aries.
