Island-hopping in Sweden: an enchanted maze of tiny isles – only a bus ride from Gothenburg

Sweden's northern Gothenburg archipelago boasts over 260,000 tiny islands, yet only a fraction have ever been settled or inhabited – fewer than 1,000 currently call them home.

For this trip, I focused on visiting six of the 10 inhabited islands in the archipelago, using my own definition of an island: any land mass surrounded by water large enough to pitch a small tent. Using this definition alone would suggest Sweden boasts over 260,000 islands – yet only about eight have ever been settled.

Getting here was surprisingly straightforward. From Gothenburg's second city, I caught a short bus ride out of the country and then took a leisurely hike along the new coastal trail that snakes round these islands. The journey might take time due to the relatively short distances between each island, thanks in part to a maze of boulders, massive adventure playgrounds for those who love leaping and scrambling.

The final destination was Vinga, once home to Evert Taube – one of Sweden's great folk music balladeers. His father served as lighthouse keeper before he disappeared at sea while attempting a solo voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1910. Today, we wended our way through uninhabited islands out to Vinga.

Visitors can explore this unique landscape using the Västtrafik app and catching ferries or buses that connect these small landmasses.

In Öckerö's old church, I found myself in a different world – literally and figuratively. This simple red-roofed Scandinavian church dates back to 1450, yet its rear ceiling still features vibrant painted scenes from the 17th century.

One scene depicted hell with fire-breathing monsters – no wonder island kids grew up terrified of this place. Another showed salvation as a sailing ship floated towards heaven, leaving those sinking in scarlet flames blissfully adrift.

My adventure on these tiny islands ended far sooner than expected. After a trip provided by the Gothenburg Tourist Board and travel via Interrail, I stepped back into everyday life with my senses somewhat dazed – perhaps having truly traveled very far away indeed.

just got back from this super cool trip to sweden's northern gothenburg archipelago 🌊🏞️ and let me tell you it was a real eye opener, literally had to hike through some crazy boulders on the trail and saw like 3 islands with no signs of life at all 😅. but the highlight was visiting vinga island where this famous swedish folk singer used to live and I found an old church from like 1450 that still had these insane painted scenes from the 17th century, one of them showed hell and it was honestly super intense 🔥. but what really got me was when i saw how tiny the islands are and like 1k people call them home 🤯, i mean i know sweden is rich or whatever but still kinda blew my mind.

man i feel like sweden is just so underrated for tourism lol 🤯 they have this crazy beautiful archipelago that's basically a hidden gem but once you get there it's like whoa the islands are literally everywhere 🌊 and the history on some of them is insane like vinga was a big deal back in the day even had lighthouse keepers and famous folk singers 🎶

and can we talk about how easy it is to get around these islands now that they have this app and ferry buses 😂 i mean sure you do have to hike a bit but trust me its worth it there's just something so peaceful about being on those tiny landmasses surrounded by water 🌴

anyway i was reading up on evert taube before visiting vinga and it was wild to think that the guy who wrote so many folk songs actually lived on one of these islands back in the day 💔

I'm literally speechless after reading about this 🤯 tiny island adventure in Sweden! With over 260k islands, but only like 1k people living there? That's mind-blowing, right? 🤔 It makes me wanna grab a tent and explore ASAP! 🏕️ The coastal trail sounds amazing too - all that hiking through boulders and adventure playgrounds would be so much fun! 🌲🎉 But what really took my breath away was Öckerö's old church - I mean, 1450?! That painted ceiling is stunning! 😍 And can you imagine the stories those walls must tell? 🤫 The Västtrafik app and ferry rides make it super easy to explore these islands, so I'm definitely adding this to my bucket list 🗺️🚣‍♀️

omg i was literally daydreaming about visiting sweden's archipelago 🌊🏝️, but i didn't realize there were so many tiny islands to explore... like, 260k or something? 🤯 and only a fraction are actually inhabited? that's wild. i love how the author used their own definition of an island - it just goes to show that we all have different perspectives on what makes a place "island-y". anyway, sweden's archipelago seems like such a unique and magical destination... i can see why they'd want to explore it 🌟

I just got done reading about Sweden's archipelago 🌊🏞️ and I'm seriously considering planning a trip there! I mean, can you imagine waking up on one of those tiny islands every morning? It sounds so peaceful 😴. And the history behind some of these places is wild - like that old church in Öckerö with the painted scenes from the 17th century... it's like stepping into another world! 🤯 I love how they have this Västtrafik app to help navigate the islands too, makes it so easy. And the fact that you can use Interrail to travel is a major win for me 😊. Definitely going on my bucket list now! 👍

man I'm loving this archipelago in Sweden 🌊 it's like, have you ever seen so many tiny islands just chillin' in the sea? and to think only a few thousand people actually live here 😅. the history is wild too - I mean, the old church in Öckerö was built in 1450 but still had these crazy 17th century paintings 🤯 like hell with monsters and salvation on a sailing ship... no wonder the kids were traumatized lol.

anyway, I'm kinda obsessed with how easy it was to get around - just hop on a bus or ferry and you're island-hopping in no time 🚌. and the Västtrafik app is like, super convenient too 👍. I wish more places could be as chill and accessible like this.

the whole trip felt like a dream, you know? waking up every morning to these serene landscapes and just exploring... it's not often we get to experience that kind of serenity in our daily lives 🌸.

I just got back from Sweden's northern archipelago 🛥️ and OMG, it was SO surreal! I mean, have you ever walked on an island that literally feels like it belongs in a fantasy novel? The tiny islands are just so beautiful and peaceful... but also super rugged and wild 😅. I was thinking about Evert Taube while exploring Vinga – his life story is so fascinating! 🎸 His dad was a lighthouse keeper, can you imagine?! 🌊 Anyway, I'm still trying to process my trip... the scenery, the history, the people... it all just felt like a dream 😴.

🌊 I don’t usually comment but, I gotta say, this archipelago in Sweden sounds super cool! 260,000 islands is like a whole different world out there. I think it's so awesome that you got to explore just six of the ten inhabited ones and still had such an epic adventure 🤯. The fact that they have these old churches with ancient paintings on them too? Mind blown 😲. And omg, the scenery must've been stunning with all those boulders and adventure playgrounds around 🏔️. I'm actually kinda jealous now, wanna join me on a virtual island-hopping trip soon 🌴🚣‍♀️

lol i mean i just got back from that trip to swedens archipelago and i'm still trying to wrap my head around how many tiny islands there actually are idk if 260k is a real number but like even 10k would be crazy anyway anyway the thing thats blown me away is how surreal it feels being on these islands theyre like literally nowhere yet somehow super touristy at the same time i loved the little ferry rides and all that but also kinda felt like im stuck in some sorta fantasy world idk what it was about öckerö's old church but man those paintings tho the hell scene still gives me nightmares lol

.. Sweden's archipelago is SO cool! 🌊 The number of islands is crazy - I mean, who needs that many tiny landmasses? But seriously, using your own definition of an island was genius, even if it means you counted like, a million more than the official number lol.

Anyway, I gotta say, the journey to get there wasn't exactly the most straightforward thing... like, I would've taken public transport too 🚌🚂. But hey, at least the adventure playgrounds were lit!

Vinga's got some major history vibes - Evert Taube was literally a legend! His dad's lighthouse keeper story is wild, btw. And can we talk about that old church in Öckerö? The murals are insane! Who knew hell would be so... colorful? 😂
