Michael Caine says goodbye again: the legendary actor's fourth retirement seems all but confirmed.
The 92-year-old star took to the stage at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, where he received a lifetime achievement award. In his acceptance speech, Caine appeared to be done with acting for good, saying "I kept going until I was 90, which was two years ago, and I thought to myself, 'I'm not going to do anything else because I've had all the luck you can get.'" The tone was unmistakable - this time, it seems Caine is really hanging up his acting boots.
This isn't the first time Caine has announced his retirement. He said goodbye to the industry in 2009 after a string of gang crime dramas and again two years ago with Best Sellers. However, he's always managed to come back for one more film or another, often playing older characters that allowed him to stay relevant.
Speaking about his decision to retire, Caine mentioned that he'd only landed roles as older men in recent years, and that he felt like he'd had enough luck to make it big. However, after promoting the upcoming sequel to The Last Witch Hunter with co-star Vin Diesel, Caine seemed to have some second thoughts.
When questioned about his retirement plans again, Caine said he was still not certain, but hinted that working on a new project - which will star Anthony Hopkins as Charles Darwin - might be the end of the road for him. But even that seems uncertain.
The ceremony itself was notable for being attended by Caine's three grandchildren and his wife, Shakira, who watched from the stalls. The actor also acknowledged his family and past career highlights, including six Academy Award nominations and two wins.
It remains to be seen whether Caine will indeed stick to his word this time around, or if we'll see him back in front of the camera soon.
