London City's Freya Godfrey on her England call-up: 'I didn't answer – I thought it was spam'

London City's Freya Godfrey Stunned by Senior Call-Up After Ignoring 'Spam' Text

Freya Godfrey, 20, was on her way to visit her brother at university when she received an unexpected call-up from England head coach Sarina Wiegman. The midfielder, who has been with London City since making a permanent move in the summer after leaving Arsenal's academy, was initially oblivious to the news.

"I didn't answer – I thought it was spam," Godfrey revealed, laughing off her initial reaction. As a cautious person, she wouldn't pick up on calls from unknown numbers unless they were close friends or family.

The call actually came from Wiegman, who congratulated Godfrey on her first senior international appearance for England's games against China and Ghana in 2025. Overjoyed at the news, Godfrey expressed her gratitude, saying she "just kept saying thank you" as she struggled to find the right words.

Godfrey has had a journey from Arsenal's academy to England Under-15s, with loans at Ipswich, Charlton, and London City along the way. Leaving Arsenal was difficult for her, but she ultimately chose to join London City due to its promising project and exciting prospects.

However, injuries have also played a significant role in hindering her progress. Most recently, she was sidelined until October, which resulted in limited game time. Godfrey believes that being back on the field has allowed her to show off her skills and build confidence.

The midfielder attributes her personal growth during this time to her experiences with rehab and recovery. "It gets frustrating, especially when it's different issues all over my body," she acknowledged. Despite these challenges, Godfrey has learned valuable lessons about perseverance and staying positive.

Godfrey also credits the England pathway for helping her develop as a player. She was initially promoted from the Under-19s to the Under-23s team and became captain, where she gained leadership experience that she believes will benefit her throughout her career.

Under new coach Sarina Wiegman, Godfrey is excited to make the most of this opportunity and soak up every experience.

🤔 I think it's kinda cool that Freya didn't even bother checking the call from Sarina Wiegman at first 'cause she thought it was spam lol! That shows how cautious she is, but also how busy her life must be right now. Being called up for senior games with England is a big deal and I guess she just wanted to savor the moment 🎉. But yeah, injuries have definitely set her back, so I hope she can stay fit and keep showing off those skills 💪. And omg, rehab and recovery sounds like a whole 'nother level of challenge 😩. anyway, I think Sarina Wiegman is doing a great job as the coach and Freya's experience with the England pathway has been super valuable for her growth 🌟.

idk why coaches still use old school methods lol like a normal person would just ignore the call if it's from an unknown number anyway Freya seems like a chill girl but she's had some tough times with injuries and rehab 🤕💉 at least she learned to stay positive and persevere though 🙏👍

🤯 I mean, think about it... we've all been there with our phones, ignoring those 'spam' texts right? 📱 But Freya's story teaches us that life can be a surprise at any moment! 😮 We might be too cautious or distracted to notice an opportunity coming our way. But what if we just paused for a sec, like she did? 🔁 Who knows what could've happened differently?! 🤔

idk why ppl think being 20 is too young 2 be considered a senior player lol 🤣 but freya godfrey's reaction 2 getting the call-up from sarina wiegman is just relatable 4 me 😂 she's like "oh, i thought it was spam" and then gets all excited 🎉. btw, being sidelined 4 months shdve been a major setback 4 her but i guess it made her more determined 2 get back out there 💪

🤩 I think it's so cool that Freya got called up for England, but yeah idk why ppl are surprised lol she sounds like a pretty chill person 😂 didn't answer the call at first because she thought it was spam tho that's kinda relatable 📱. anyway gotta give her props for being grateful and showing off her skills on the field 💪. hope she gets to play more games now 🎉, seems like injuries have really messed with her progress 🤕 but I guess rehab can be super helpful 💊. England pathway has definitely given her some valuable experience 👍, fingers crossed for her future in football ⚽️!
