Meet Mandy Mango, the Philly Queen Taking Center Stage on 'RuPaul's Drag Race'
Mandy Mango is about to unleash her most unapologetically queer form of self onto the national stage as she competes for a prize of $200,000 and a collaboration with Anastasia Beverly Hills Cosmetics in Season 18 of 'RuPaul's Drag Race'. A Lansdale native turned drag icon, Mango has been moving through the drag circuit since her first performance nearly a decade ago as a West Chester University student.
Inspired by Season 16 runner-up Sapphira Cristál, Mango aims to draw from both her Philadelphia roots and Filipino heritage in her performances. Her stage name, Mandy Mango, was born out of a bag of dried mangos, a popular snack in the Philippines where her mother was a pageant queen in the 1980s.
For Mango, drag is about embracing freedom and self-expression. Growing up as a femme-loving, musical theater-enthusiast Catholic, she felt insecure about her feminine-looking body but found liberation in drag. It has also helped her explore gender fluidity in everyday life.
When not tending to HIV patients at Penn Medicine or slaying the nightlife scene with Snatcherella 3000 and the No Arena Drag Show, Mango keeps her work and drag life separate - that is, until she realized they can feed into each other. Her experience as a nurse informs her drag performances, which in turn provide comfort and joy to her LGBTQ+ patients.
Mango's journey to 'Drag Race' was marked by self-doubt. Just a year ago, she was considering quitting the business, but seeing fellow Philly queen Sapphira Cristál compete on the show reignited her passion for drag. With her friends' encouragement, Mango submitted her audition tape mere minutes before the deadline.
Now, Mango is ready to honor the city that raised her by incorporating Philadelphia designers and artists into her performances and showcasing her drag family's love and support. As she prepares to follow in Cristál's footsteps, Mango says she's thrilled to be a part of 'RuPaul's Drag Race', even if those "feetsteps" are petite, but full of luxury and spirit.
Season 18 of 'RuPaul's Drag Race' premieres on Friday at 8 p.m.
