Meet the newly uninsured

The US health care system is facing an unprecedented crisis as millions of Americans are on the verge of losing their coverage due to unaffordable premiums. Unless Congress acts soon, up to 4 million Americans will become uninsured as they can no longer afford the rising costs.

The crisis was triggered by a deal reached between Democrats and Republicans to end the longest government shutdown on record. While Democrats pressed for lower health care costs, they relented without securing a compromise that would prevent this catastrophic situation. The result is a looming health care policy disaster.

We spoke with four individuals from different backgrounds – a young gig worker, a father, an early retiree, and a middle-aged entrepreneur – who are now facing difficult choices as their health care costs skyrocket. They risk taking shortcuts on their health, skipping appointments, stockpiling medicines, or even going uninsured altogether. These individuals feel betrayed by politicians who could fix the problem but seem more concerned with scoring political points.

One of these individuals, Hussein Cabrera, a 45-year-old IT contractor, has been struggling to afford his family's health insurance premiums. When he logged onto HealthCare.gov this year, he was shocked to see that his wife's plan now costs $285 per month, five times what it did last year. He is now considering dropping his own coverage and ensuring his wife's access to her doctors and medicines.

Ian, a 36-year-old part-time worker in Texas, has been enrolled in the ACA for most of the past decade but is now facing an impossible dilemma. With asthma that requires medical attention, he needs health insurance but is being forced to choose between paying exorbitant premiums or risking his health.

Samuel, a 47-year-old entrepreneur who started his own business after working as a government contractor, is also facing a daunting decision. He had previously received good health insurance through his work but now can't afford the rising costs on the ACA marketplaces. The thought of hospitals denying him service for not having health insurance is a constant fear.

Lastly, Steven, a retiree in his late 50s, feels trapped as he tries to balance his family's need for affordable health care with the reality of their own financial constraints. With a family plan costing $2,700 per month and a deductible of up to $5,300, they are struggling to make ends meet.

These individuals are just a few examples of the millions of Americans who will be forced to navigate this crisis without adequate support or guidance from lawmakers. The US health care system is in dire need of reform, but as politicians continue to prioritize their own interests over people's well-being, many wonder if they can trust that their voices will be heard.

ugh, great job on the whole bipartisan deal thing 🙄... like, who needs affordable healthcare anyway? these 4 people are literally going through hell and it's all because "politicians" aren't doing their jobs 🤷‍♀️. meanwhile, i'm over here trying to figure out how to pay my own bills without losing my mind 💸. at least the ACA is still available, right? kinda like the only thing that keeps you from completely falling off a cliff 😩. seriously though, can't we just get some functional healthcare reform already? 🤦‍♂️

OMG 🤯 I'm literally shook by this news!!! How can ppl be so heartless? 😩 Those 4 individuals sharing their stories are just a glimpse into the chaos millions of Americans are gonna face. It's all about $$$ over people's lives 💸. Congress needs to step up & fix this ASAP! Can't believe they're more worried 'bout scoring points than solving the crisis 🤷‍♀️. Those ppl who can't afford health insurance gotta take shortcuts? That's just awful 😔. The ACA marketplaces need major reform, like NOW! 💪

I'm so worried about these 4 individuals, they're literally being forced to choose between paying for healthcare or going hungry... 😩 It's outrageous that the US healthcare system is letting millions of people down like this. The fact that politicians are more concerned with scoring points than helping ppl is just mind-boggling 🤯 I mean, can't we put politics aside and just do what's best for our country? 🙏 I think we need to overhaul the entire system, make it way more affordable for everyone. Maybe a public option or something... I don't know, but I know it can't stay like this 🚨 4 million ppl losing their coverage is just not acceptable 🤦‍♂️ We need some serious change ASAP 👊

Ugh, this is super concerning 🤯 I mean, 4 million ppl losing coverage? That's insane! It feels like the gov't is just pushing the problem around instead of solving it. The fact that ppl are being forced to take shortcuts on their health because they can't afford it is honestly heartbreaking 💔. And what's with the politicking? Can't we just have a civilized discussion about how to make healthcare more affordable for everyone? 🤷‍♀️

omg this is so sad I cant believe ppl r struggling so much cuz of healthcare costs 🤕💸 it sounds like its all about politics and scoring points instead of helping ppl who need it most 4 million ppl losing coverage is a disaster 🚨 we need reform ASAP and not just lip service from politicians 🙄

omg i'm literally freaking out about this 😱 the way our gov is handling healthcare is just so messed up 🤯 like what kind of system allows ppl to lose coverage cuz its too expensive?! 💸 my cousin has been struggling w/ her insurance premiums 2 and now she's having to choose between paying or going without meds 🌡️ i cant even imagine how scary that must be for her 😩 i think we need 2 take a step back & reevaluate our entire system cuz right now its just not fair 💖

😬 the fact that these ppl r having to take shortcuts on their health bcos of unaffordable premiums is just crazy, like what happened 2 ppl in the article, Hussein & Ian, cant even afford their own coverage rn, let alone gettin help 4 their fams 🤕. we need 2 see some REAL change here 💸 not just politics as usual.
