Michael Carrick: Man Utd could be active on deadline day, says interim boss

Manchester United's interim head coach Michael Carrick has hinted that the club could still be active on transfer deadline day, despite having a significant portion of their transfer budget tied up.

Carrick was speaking in a news conference before Sunday's Premier League encounter with Fulham, where his team are seeking to extend their lead at the top four with a win. The United boss said "never say never" when asked if the club would make any further additions to their squad before Monday's transfer deadline.

The suggestion that Manchester United could still be active on deadline day comes after they were unable to complete a deal for long-term target Antoine Semenyo, who opted to join Manchester City from Bournemouth. The club's refusal to divert £65m that had been allocated for Semenyo was cited as a source of frustration by former United head coach Ruben Amorim.

However, despite the setback, Carrick expressed confidence in his team's ability to win matches at home, stating "taking anything for granted is bang out of order."

Manchester United are currently enjoying an impressive run under Carrick, who has overseen victories against Premier League top two sides Arsenal and Manchester City. However, the club tends to struggle against lower-lying opponents, having failed to beat teams like Everton, West Ham, Bournemouth, and Wolves at Old Trafford in league games.

Fulham, meanwhile, have been enjoying a remarkable resurgence under manager Marco Silva, who has guided the team to 17 points from their last eight games. The Cottagers are just one point behind United in the table and could potentially close the gap with a win on Sunday.

Carrick's comments also come as the club assesses Bruno Fernandes' future, with the United captain due to evaluate his plans at the end of the season. However, Carrick has stated that this situation will be dealt with "further down the line."

Overall, Michael Carrick is taking nothing for granted as Manchester United seek to extend their lead in the Premier League. With Fulham seeking to close the gap and a number of key players returning from injury, the weekend's encounter promises to be an intense and closely-fought one.

🤔 I'm kinda surprised by Carrick's comments about keeping an open mind on transfer deadline day... seems like they've got a pretty solid squad already 🙌 Still, can't deny that Fulham are giving United a run for their money right now 💪 As long as Carrick keeps his team on track, I'll be rooting for them to keep the top four spot 🏆

OMG yooo 😂 Manchester United still gonna make some moves on deadline day? I gotta say, Carrick's right we can't predict what happens in football lol... they're like that, unpredictable 🤪. And btw, I'm loving the fact that Fulham are giving United a run for their money 🏆. Marco Silva is doing an amazing job and Cottagers fans should be hyped 🎉. What's your take on this transfer drama? Are you a United fan or just watching from the sidelines 👀?

the fact that carrick is keeping their options open on deadline day is quite telling - it suggests that man united still believe they can make a push for the top four and potentially more 🤔. but at the same time, their inability to secure semenyo is a clear indication that the club's priorities are slightly askew...i mean, £65m was set aside specifically for him, so it's hard to see how carrick wouldn't want to make a move. still, one can't help but feel that man united's transfer strategy is being driven more by desperation than pragmatism 💸.

SO WHATS UP WITH MAN U RIGHT NOW?! THEY CAN'T SEEM TO BEAT THE LOWER-LEAGUE TEAMS AT HOME 🤯 AND YET THEY'RE DOING OKAY IN THE TOP LEAGUE... I MEAN, CARRICK'S TEAM HAS BEEN DOING WELL SINCE HE TOOK OVER BUT YOU JUST NEVER KNOW WHATS GONNA HAPPEN ON DEADLINE DAY 😬. MAYBE THEY'LL MAKE SOME LAST-MINUTE MOVES AND SHOCK EVERYONE, OR MAYBE THEY'LL JUST TAKE A STEP BACK... I'M GUYS, I COULD GO EITHER WAY 🤪

man i dont get why carrick is being all secretive about fernandes situation... we all know it cant go well for the guy if hes not gonna stay or leave ... 3rd time is the charm tho 🤔😅

I'm loving this transfer deadline drama 🤣! You never know what will happen on deadline day. Like when you're trying to pick up a new pair of kicks at the mall - you try them on, then suddenly someone tries to lowball you with half the price 😂. Carrick's all like "never say never" and I'm over here thinking "never say yes either, mate 🤑". Seriously though, Manchester United are having an amazing run under Carrick and it'll be interesting to see if they can keep the momentum going against Fulham on Sunday 🏈.
