My Bloody Valentine review – shoegaze pioneers find prettiness in pulverising noise

My Bloody Valentine's Live Show: A Sonic Apocalypse of Prettiness

When every entrant in a live show comes with earplugs, it begs the question: why not just tone down the noise? For My Bloody Valentine, reducing their legendary volume would strip away the multi-sensory, physical, and musical experience that has captivated fans for decades.

The Irish-English band, pioneers of the shoegaze genre, have long been credited with inventing a sound that's ethereal, dreamlike, and effects-laden. However, in this live show, they seem to have more in common with noise warriors like Einstürzende Neubaten than their fellow shoegazers from the home counties.

Despite the ear-shattering decibels, there's an undeniable prettiness at the heart of My Bloody Valentine's music – Bilinda Butcher's gentle vocals and Kevin Shields' beautiful melodies somehow mesh together to create a rich tapestry of sound. The band's rhythm section, comprised of bassist Debbie Googe and drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig, provides a solid foundation that drives the chaotic maelstrom forward.

The sheer intensity of My Bloody Valentine's live show is breathtaking, with Shields' walls of shrieking sound creating an apocalyptic atmosphere. But even in the midst of this sonic chaos, there are moments of beauty and refinement – like when Shields dedicates his 1990s classic "Soon" to late Stone Roses bassist Mani.

The band's music has come a long way since its humble beginnings in pubs, where it first emerged as a raw, DIY sound. Today, their live shows are the stuff of legend, with fans traveling from far and wide to experience the full force of My Bloody Valentine's unique sound. As they played on, the near two-hour show was a journey through the band's evolution, a form of aural sculpture that culminated in an astonishing closer that felt like the sound of an apocalypse.

In short, My Bloody Valentine's live show is not for the faint of heart – but for those who are willing to brave the sonic assault, it's an unforgettable experience that's worth every moment of ear-piercing noise.

omg u guys my bloody valentine's live show is literally a sensory overload but in a good way 🤯🎸 i mean i was literally sweating and my ears are still ringing but it was so worth it they have this one song that just goes on forever and ever and i swear i almost cried from the beauty of it Bilinda's vocals are literally the most soothing thing ever and kevin's guitar work is insane 🤯🎸 and those drums are like whoa i need to see them live again ASAP 😍

🤯 I mean, what's wrong with a little bit of earplugs? This My Bloody Valentine live show is like nothing else out there - all that feedback and distortion is part of the charm! 🎸 It's not just about the sound, it's an experience, man. You gotta be willing to surrender to the chaos and let the music wash over you. And trust me, it's worth it. I've been following them since the 90s and their live shows never disappoint. Bilinda's vocals are like butter for my ears (in a good way 😊). And Kevin Shields' guitar work is just... wow. It's like he's conjuring up some otherworldly magic on stage. The rhythm section holds it all together, that's for sure. I've seen them live five times and each show was like a different kind of sonic apocalypse 🌪️. If you haven't been to one yet, what are you even doing with your life?

omg u guys, i just got back from my bloody valentine's concert 🤯🎸 and i'm still reeling from the experience!!! 😲 they really know how to pack a punch - literally 💥 i was like "is this guy gonna be deaf by the end of it?" 😂 but seriously, bilinda's vocals are still so soothing amidst all that chaos, and kevin shields' guitar work is insane 🔥 i mean, i get why people need earplugs, but where's the fun in that? 🤣 it was like they were creating this sonic apocalypse on stage, and i was HOOKED 😍

I was literally shaking my head the whole time 🤯! I mean, I get why they're called My Bloody Valentine, but do they have to be THAT loud?! 😂 I love them too, but come on, guys, can't you just dial it back a notch? It's like they want to make sure everyone in the audience is deaf by the end of the show 🎸👀 The music itself is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but all that noise is just excessive. I swear, I had to put my hands over my ears at one point and still heard everything just fine 😂

😂 I was at this concert and oh man, my ears were ringing for days! 🤯 But seriously, I think that's what makes their live show so special - it's like a wild emotional rollercoaster 🎠. You're not sure if you'll be screaming along or covering your ears, but somehow it all works together to create this incredible sonic experience 🎶. And yeah, Bilinda's vocals are just gorgeous 💕. I've seen some loud bands in my time, but My Bloody Valentine takes the cake...or should I say, earplugs 😂👀

🤯 I just got back from their live show and OMG... it was like nothing I've ever experienced before! 😲 The energy was electric and the sound is literally overwhelming - I had to duck for cover at times 🤣. But despite all the decibels, there's something so beautiful about Bilinda's vocals and Kevin's melodies that just takes your breath away 🌊. It's like they're transporting you to another world, a world of pure sonic bliss 😴. And when they played "Soon", I was totally lost in the music - it was like Mani's spirit was with them on stage ❤️. The whole show was like an aural sculpture, building up to this crazy finale that just left me speechless 🤯. If you're a fan of My Bloody Valentine, you HAVE to see them live - it's an experience unlike any other 💥!

I'm literally still shaking from that show 🤯😍 They just made their whole discography feel so much more alive and visceral - I mean, Bilinda's vocals are already super ethereal but live they're like... whoa 😱 Kevin Shields' guitar work is insane! The way he can switch between these beautiful melodies and just pure noise is genius 🤘 And the crowd was completely entranced - it was like we were all in this together, you know? 🌪️ I'm seriously considering getting earplugs for my next show but at the same time I don't want to miss out on the experience 😅

🤯 they just released a new album and it sounds like a bunch of distorted guitars with no actual melody lol what's next islam apocalyptic doomcore? 🚨🎸 i'm not saying their fans aren't cool or anything but have you seen the prices for tickets to these shows? £150+ for a gig that just sounds like 3 dudes screaming into amplifiers 🤑 meanwhile, my ears are still recovering from their last show and it's been a week 😩
