Nets' Coach Fernández Insists Noah Clowney Is Not Showing Signs of Struggling Despite Slow Start.
Noah Clowney, Brooklyn's third-year forward, has had a lackluster start to the season in terms of his stat line. Over five games, he has scored just 5.2 points per game and is hitting only 25 percent of his shots, with both numbers significantly down from last year. However, despite these poor stats, head coach Jordi Fernández says that Clowney had a great summer, with his body looking particularly healthy.
Fernández expressed disappointment in how the team has been torched on defense so far this season but acknowledged that Clowney is still showing some promise. He pointed to their most recent defeat against Atlanta, when Clowney hit just 1 of 7 field goals, as an example of how good shots didn't go his way.
Fernández wants Clowney to keep shooting and not overthink it, suggesting that he played well in the last game despite not making all of his shots. The coach believes that Clowney can be a big presence for the team with his size, toughness, shooting, rebounding, and winning plays.
However, on the defensive side of the ball, Fernández notes that Clowney could use some improvement. While he was better in the last game, the coach wants more from him overall.
The Nets' injury report also revealed that rookie Ziaire Williams is "pretty close" to returning after suffering a back fracture and a contusion on a hard fall. If his body responds well to playing again, Fernández said they would make a decision about his availability.
Additionally, rookies Danny Wolf and Nolan Traore will be working with the team's G League affiliate in Long Island to get more work done.
