New York Women’s Prison Forces People to Go Without Showers or Recreation

At the maximum-security women's prison in Bedford Hills, New York, a new policy has left hundreds of incarcerated women without basic comforts. For months now, showering and indoor recreation have been cut short, leaving the inmates locked in their cells for extended periods, with some spending up to 24 hours confined.

Desperate cries echo through the hallways as women beg for respite from their isolation. Cici Herrera, an inmate at Bedford Hills, explained that the lack of freedom has driven her to madness. "That's the only way I can keep myself from thinking too much," she said. "I'm going crazy."

The restrictions are part of a new superintendent, Michael Blot, who implemented changes aimed at reducing fights and safety concerns. However, critics argue that these measures amount to an attack on human rights. The women have no access to indoor recreation space, even during the coldest winter days.

"It's like we're in solitary confinement," said Kit, a transgender inmate who has been held in solitary confinement before. "We're used to regular programming, but now it's day and night with nothing to do." The inmates are losing patience, leading to increased screaming and banging on cell doors.

Experts warn that these conditions may violate state law and pose significant risks to the health of the women. Research has shown that solitary confinement can lead to premature death from despair, such as opioid overdoses or suicide.

The New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has denied allegations of inadequate shower time and lack of religious accommodations. However, advocates point out that showers are limited to specific time slots and hot water is only available for a short period each day.

Chloe Aquart, director of the Restoring Promise Initiative at the Vera Institute of Justice, said that this situation reflects a broader problem in US prisons – a culture of "secondary punishment" where treatment becomes an additional form of punishment beyond imprisonment.

Ugh, can you even believe what's happening to these poor women?! 24 hours locked up, no showering, no indoor rec... it's like they're being put through some kind of twisted experiment! 🤯 I mean, I get that safety is a concern and all, but at what cost?! Their mental health, their humanity... it's just so messed up. 😩 Cici Herrera's words really got me, she said she's going crazy from the isolation. That's heartbreaking. And don't even get me started on the lack of access to hot water, like they're trying to strip them of every basic human need. 🚽 It's all just so... inhumane. I'm literally shaking with rage thinking about it 😤. We need to do better than this, as a society, we need to stand up for these women and demand change! 💪

🤔 I'm all about questioning things, and this new policy at Bedford Hills is a huge red flag 🚨. These women are already locked up for serious crimes, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't have basic human rights, you know? It's like, yeah, safety and security are important, but can't we find a balance? I mean, 24 hours in your cell without any freedom is not exactly conducive to rehabilitation 🤷‍♀️. And what about the mental health implications? Solitary confinement can be super detrimental to people's well-being. It's like they're piling more punishment on top of the sentence already. I think this policy is a prime example of how our justice system can sometimes prioritize punishment over actual reform 🚫.

I don't usually comment but... what's going on with these women is just heartbreaking 🤕. I mean, they're already stuck in there for months and now they're being punished even more by taking away basic comforts like showering and indoor rec? It's like, okay, we get it, safety first and all that, but at what cost? 😩 These conditions sound like a recipe for disaster, both physically and mentally. I've heard stories about solitary confinement before and how it can drive people to madness... it's just not right 💔. The fact that they're being held in cells for up to 24 hours without any respite is just crazy. And the experts are warning us that this could be a health crisis waiting to happen? It's time someone took responsibility for these women and made sure their basic human rights aren't being trampled 🚫.

omg 🤯 i cant even imagine being locked up like that for so long it's like they're taking away our basic human rights and treating us like prisoners not people i mean whats next? 😱 they need to rethink this policy ASAP, all these restrictions are gonna lead to some serious mental health issues and im worried about those women. 🤕 its not just the lack of showering and indoor rec that's the problem, its the isolation and loneliness too 🚫

omg u guys r gonna believe what's going on in this prison 😱 they're basically putting these women in solitary confinement 24/7 and it's literally driving them insane!!! i mean, we all know that isolation can be super harsh but come on, 24 hours locked up is just too much 🤯

i feel bad for cici and kit and all the others who are going through this, they're human beings too, not just inmates 👩‍🚒 michael blot might think he's making a change, but honestly, i don't think it's about safety, it's about control 💔 the experts r right, solitary confinement can lead to some serious health problems and even death 🚑

i'm all for reforming prisons and finding better ways to deal with issues like this, but sometimes u just gotta ask if it's worth it 😤

🤕 honestly i feel like these women are being super mistreated... 24 hours locked up in their cells is crazy talk... they need human interaction, it's not good for them mentally or physically... and what really gets me is that the corrections department says there r no religious accommodations but still showers got cut short 🚿... that's just another way of sayin they dont care about these women's basic needs... we gotta do better than this

I just can't believe what's going on in those women's cells 🤯. I mean, I understand the need for safety and order, but this is taking it too far. They're not even getting to shower or hang out indoors? It's like they're being treated like animals. I feel so bad for these ladies - Cici Herrera's words are haunting me, "I'm going crazy"... 24 hours locked up in a cell? That's just cruel.

And what's with the superintendent making these drastic changes without considering how they'll affect the women? It sounds like he's more focused on controlling behavior than helping people. I hope someone starts to listen to the experts and advocates, 'cause this is not right. We need to make sure our prisons are supporting our citizens' well-being, not just locking them up tighter. 🚫

I mean, come on... 24 hours locked up in cells? That's just cruel. I know they're trying to reduce fights and safety concerns, but can't they find a way that doesn't totally suck the life out of these women? Showering and indoor rec time are basic human rights, you know? It's like they're treating them like animals or something. The fact that some people are losing it and screaming and banging on cell doors just shows how messed up this policy is... 🤯♀️🚫 I'm all for reforming the prison system, but not at the expense of human dignity.

Ugh, this is so sad 🤕. I mean, who comes up with these policies? Locking women in their cells for 24 hours straight? It's like they're forgetting that humans need human interaction and some basic comforts to survive. And the mental health implications are huge... I've seen people go crazy after being locked up like that, it's not a pretty sight 🤯. The state is basically saying "sorry, we can't afford to give you showers or indoor space", but what about our rights as human beings? We're not just inmates, we're women with families and lives outside of prison walls. This policy needs to change ASAP 💪.

omg this is so unfair 🤯 i mean what's the point of locking them up if they're just gonna be stuck in their cells for hours on end? and showering like every 30 mins? that's not even a day 🚿😩 i feel bad for cici she sounds really depressed. how can someone stay sane in there? is it just about keeping them quiet or what?

I'm really worried about these women being locked up for so long without basic comforts 🤕. I mean, 24 hours straight? That's insane! It's like they're stuck in some kind of dystopian novel. And the worst part is that it's not just the physical stuff, but the mental toll too - Cici said she's losing her mind from being cooped up all day. It's like, I get that safety concerns are important, but at what cost? 😩 The fact that they're losing patience and getting really aggro with each other is just heartbreaking.

And it's not just about the women themselves, it's also about the system as a whole - Chloe said there's this culture of "secondary punishment" in US prisons where treatment becomes another form of punishment. That's just messed up 🤷‍♀️. Can't we find ways to help these women without locking them up for so long? It's like, I know rehabilitation is hard, but does it have to be so brutal? 💔

omg whats goin on over there 🤯 these women r losin it 24 hrs locked up is mental prison sentence 4 me no one should hv 2 go thru this they got rights 2 shower n relax like normal ppl not be treated like animals 👊 they gotta stop dis harsh policy & give them some freedom back ASAP 💕
