NY businesses prep for holiday crowds, sales … and maybe raids by immigration agents

As holiday shopping season kicks off across New York City, business owners are bracing themselves for potential encounters with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. To prepare, mutual aid and immigrant advocacy groups have been distributing pamphlets and signs to local businesses and employees, highlighting their rights in the event of a visit from law enforcement.

The outreach effort comes as Trump administration officials have renewed promises to send more ICE officers to New York City, amidst ongoing immigration crackdowns in other major cities. According to estimates by the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, roughly 412,000 undocumented immigrants live in NYC without permanent legal status.

Businesses are being advised to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their employees from potential raids. This includes labeling private areas where ICE cannot freely enter, such as employee-only spaces or authorized personnel areas. Signs are being distributed with clear markings indicating these areas, and business owners are encouraged to stress the importance of protecting their workspace.

ICE agents may attempt to use administrative warrants, which have less credibility than judicial warrants and do not carry the same legal weight. Advocates advise individuals to verify the authenticity of any warrant presented by checking for the name of the court, signature of the judge, address of the individual being targeted, and date issued.

Employees are also being reminded of their rights, including the right to remain silent, refuse a search without a judicial warrant, and record interactions with ICE. They should always ask if they can leave and are free to do so.

While business owners want to encourage compliance and cooperation with law enforcement, advocates caution against escalating situations or engaging in physical behavior that could put individuals or others at risk. Instead, verbal stress on rights and continued questioning of whether the individual is free to go are recommended strategies.

As the holiday shopping season unfolds, businesses must remain vigilant and prepared for potential ICE encounters. By knowing their rights and taking proactive steps to protect themselves, employees can better navigate these situations and ensure their safety and well-being.

omg u gotta know ur rights rn!!! 🤯 so if ice shows up at ur workplace they're not entitled 2 just b like "oh ur not supposed 2 leave" ur actually allowed 2 say no & leave whenever u want 🚪 & if they try 2 search u, they need a legit warrant with the judge's name & everything 👀

businesses r also being told 2 label certain areas as private so ice can't just b like "oh i'm just gonna walk in" 🚫 but honestly idc who's in charge rn its all about ur personal space & safety 💁‍♀️

omg, u guys its already happening in nyc 🚨🏙️ i went shopping in the west village last wknd & literally saw a guy in a suit talking to his manager while they were looking worried 😬 guess thats what happens when ur not prepared for the ice raids 🤯 anyway i think its crazy how many ppl live here w/o papers its like 412k+ undocumented immigrants 🤯 dont u guys feel bad for them? 🤷‍♀️ we should be supporting them more instead of kicking them out 🌎

🤯 OMG u guys ICE agents r comin 4 NYC! I'm literally shakin rn like, what if they come into ur workplace lol I no we gotta be extra careful but like, let's not freak out right? 🙅‍♀️ My friend works at Starbucks and she said they're makin signs 2 label private areas 2 prevent ICE from enterin 🤝 that's so cool! 🎉 We gotta support our ppl & their rights 💖 I'm def distributin dem pamphlets 2 my friends too, u guys should do the same 📣 we can't let ICE intimidate us! 💪

I'm worried about all those families living in NYC without proper status... it's so stressful just thinking about it 😕. These pamphlets and signs are a great resource for businesses and employees alike, but what about the people who don't have access to them? I wish there was more support and resources available to help undocumented immigrants navigate these uncertain times 🤗.

I've seen some friends from NYC who have had scary experiences with ICE, and it's just heartbreaking. The fact that Trump administration officials are sending more agents to the city is really concerning. It feels like they're escalating the situation rather than trying to find a solution 💔.

We need to create a safer and more inclusive community for everyone, regardless of their status. Businesses can play a big role by providing a welcoming space for all employees, but we also need systemic change on a larger scale 🌎. Let's hope that with continued advocacy and support, things will get better for these families soon 💕.

I don’t usually comment but I feel like it's really important for businesses in NYC to be aware of what's going on with ICE. It's not just about protecting themselves from potential raids but also making sure their employees know how to handle themselves if they're stopped by immigration agents 🤔. I mean, who hasn't heard horror stories about people being detained or deported without even knowing why? It's a really scary situation and I think it's great that mutual aid groups are out there helping businesses prepare.

I'm not sure why we need pamphlets and signs to tell us what our rights are, but I guess some people might be in the dark 🤷‍♂️. Anyway, labeling private areas on their property is a good start, and I hope business owners take it seriously. It's just common sense, right? And can't we all just try to get along without having to worry about ICE showing up unannounced? Let's all just wish each other a peaceful holiday season 😊.

omg u guys i cant even imagine walkin into work or shop and seeing ice agents lol like whats next theyre comin for us anyway im just glad theres mutual aid groups doin somethin about it its wild 412k ppl livin in nyc without perm legal status meanwhile we're all just tryna make ends meet 🤑👀 anyway i think its super smart of bizzies to label private areas and put up signs with clear markings like whoa u dont wanna be caught off guard by a fake warrant or somethin 🤦‍♀️ also employees r gettin a bad rep but idc lol they should def know their rights and not hesititate 2 ask if they can leave 🚫👮‍♀️ anyway i just hope it doesnt come 2 dat nyc businesses rnt ready for dis lol 😂

🤯 this is so messed up... like i know there are people who think we should have borders but come on, sending agents to every business in the city? its not just about immigration it's about respect for ppl's rights 🙅‍♂️ NYC is supposed to be a beacon of freedom and now its being used as a testing ground for ICEs tactics? what if they start targeting people who arent even undocumented? like, i have friends who have family members who got caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up in detention centers... it's already traumatic enough without having to worry about getting raided at work 😩

OMG 🤯 this is so messed up 😩 i dont think its fair that ppl are living in fear of ice agents just because they're undocumented like what did they do wrong? 🙄 and yeah the pamphlets and signs are a good idea but it should be all businesses not just ones where immigrants work. and labels for private areas? come on, how about just respecting people's boundaries instead of trying to hide behind "official" documents 😒 and what's with the "verify the warrant" thing? who has time for that? 🕰️
