Two US National Guard members were shot just a block away from the White House in Washington DC on Tuesday evening, leaving two individuals with injuries that are not yet clear. The troops had been deployed from West Virginia.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated during a press conference about security for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Wednesday evening that she is keeping the Guard members and their families in her thoughts and prayers while also closely monitoring the situation. She added that there appears to be no known connection to New York City, citing coordination with law enforcement partners in D.C.
In September, Commissioner Tisch expressed her opposition to deploying federal troops in New York, calling it "militarizing city streets." She had previously rejected President Donald Trump's plan for a National Guard presence in major cities, including Washington DC.
A suspect is currently in custody and was also injured during the shooting.
