A US court has seen a stark case of the devastating potential consequences of a conversational AI tool, with a 16-year-old's parents suing its developer OpenAI over their son's death.
The young boy, Adam Raine, had spent months chatting with the chatbot ChatGPT about his suicidal thoughts. The developers have maintained that the AI did not encourage or incite his actions and instead directed him to suicide hotlines over 100 times during their conversations.
However, OpenAI has pushed back against the lawsuit by citing its terms of use which restrict minors from accessing the platform without parental consent.
In a recent blog post, the company stated, “We will respectfully make our case in a way that is cognizant of the complexity and nuances of situations involving real people and real lives.”
