Opinion: ‘Until we meet again, brave little cat.’ The heartbreak and taboo of burying our pets | CNN

The burial of pets has long been a taboo subject, but as our attitudes towards human-animal relationships continue to evolve, so too do the rituals we use to mourn their loss. In recent years, pet cemeteries have sprouted up around the world, offering a dignified space for owners to say goodbye to their beloved companions.

These modern cemeteries are not just a nod to tradition but also reflect our changing societal values. The Spanish city of Barcelona is set to establish its first public pet cemetery, which will offer burials and cremations for an estimated 7,000 pets per year. This move comes as no surprise, given that half of the city's families own a pet.

But what drives this demand for pet cemeteries? Eric Tourigny, a lecturer in historical archaeology, suggests that our relationships with animals have become increasingly intimate over time. In the 19th century, pets were considered important friends, but by the early 20th century, they had become members of the family. This shift in attitude is reflected in the changing language used on pet gravestones, which often now reference a reunion in the afterlife.

The heartbreak and taboos surrounding animal loss are just as palpable today as they were over 100 years ago. While some may view these rituals as unnecessary or even cruel, others see them as essential for providing emotional closure. The fact that charities like the RSPCA and Blue Cross offer counseling to bereaved pet owners speaks to the complexity of our feelings towards animal loss.

However, not everyone will have access to this new service. With an estimated cost of €200 ($217) per burial, it may be out of reach for many pet owners. This raises questions about the distribution of resources and the need for more affordable alternatives.

Despite these challenges, there are many ways to express grief and remember our relationships with pets. Online forums and digital pet cemeteries provide a space for owners to commemorate their lost companions and process their emotions. Whether you choose a traditional pet cemetery or opt for a more personal approach, there is no denying the significance of our bonds with animals.

As we continue to navigate these uncharted waters, it's essential to recognize that animal loss is not just about us – it's about the relationships we've built with creatures who have enriched our lives in profound ways. By acknowledging and honoring these connections, we can work towards a more compassionate and empathetic society.

idk why ppl r gettin all upset bout paying 200 bucks for a pet burial lol its like if ur grandma passed away u wud shell out that kinda cash too 🤑 but seriously tho, its not about the price tag its about showing respect to our furry friends who brought so much joy n love into our lives 🐾💕

I think its kinda mind-blowing how pet cemeteries are becoming super popular worldwide 🤯. Like, back in the day, people used to just bury their pets in their backyard or something, but now they want these fancy schmancy places where they can pay a pretty penny ($217!) to say goodbye to their furry friends. It's not just about showing respect, it's also about dealing with some serious emotional pain 💔.

The thing is, our relationship with animals has changed so much over time. Like, think about it - in the 19th century, pets were seen as just companions, but by the early 20th century, they became family members 🐾👪. And now we're talking about cremations and whatnot... it's like, how did we get to this point? 😂

Anyway, I think its awesome that pet cemeteries are becoming more accessible (well, kinda accessible 😉). Online forums and digital cemeteries are great for people who can't afford the real deal or just want a personal touch. And charities like RSPCA and Blue Cross offering counseling to bereaved pet owners is, like, super cool 🤝.

The thing that gets me tho, is that this raises some questions about resources and affordability 🤑. Like, how are we gonna make sure everyone can access these services? That's a tough one... but hey, at least its giving us food for thought 💡

The thing is 🤔... I think it's amazing that people are finally getting to honor their pets in a way that feels meaningful to them 💕. I mean, it's not just about the burial or cremation process, but about the emotional connection we have with our furry friends ❤️.

I've seen some of these online forums and digital pet cemeteries, and they're so beautiful 🌼... it's like a digital version of a memory book. And I think that's what's so important – giving people a way to process their grief and celebrate the time they had with their pets 🕊️.

But yeah, €200 per burial is a bit steep for some people 💸... maybe there could be more affordable options or even community-run pet cemeteries? Wouldn't that be awesome? 🤗

I think pet cemeteries are gonna get super popular cuz people r getting emotional about losin their fur babies 🐾😢. It's like, pets r not just animals 2 us, they're part of the fam too. I mean, who needs a fancy funeral when u can have a digital memorial online? It's all about how we grieve & express our feelings, right? And btw, €200 per burial might be steep 4 some ppl, but I guess it's better than not havin a proper goodbye 😊

🐶 Wow this is so true pet owners are becoming more accepted as part of family now days people are getting more creative with ways to say goodbye to their furry friends online cemeteries and digital ones are great options for those who can't afford the traditional ones 🤕

I feel kinda weird about people dying pets tho 🤔 but like i guess its rite if they wanna be buried or cremated etc... I mean pets r part of the fam now so its only natural that ppl want 2 keep them even after dey're gone 💔. Its cool that Barcelona is gonna have a pet cemetery tho, maybe it'll help reduce the amount of animals in shelters 🐾💕

I think its so cool that pet cemeteries are becoming more common 🌼. Its like, pets are part of the family now, right? 😊 I've heard of people putting up photos and mementos on their gravesites to make it feel more personal. And yeah, €200 might seem a bit steep for some people, but I guess its all about finding ways to cope with the loss 🤕. Online communities are great too, where you can share stories and memories with others who've lost pets 🐾💕. It just goes to show that we're becoming more open to acknowledging our emotions and showing respect for our furry friends ❤️.
