Oscar-Winning ‘Wicked’ Costume Designer Paul Tazewell Boards Indonesian Biopic ‘Rose Pandanwangi’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Paul Tazewell, Oscar-winning costume designer behind Broadway phenomenon "Wicked," has been tapped to join the creative team of Indonesian biopic "Rose Pandanwangi." The film, directed by Razka Robby Ertanto and produced by Chelsea Islan, Ertanto, Kristine de Leon, and Summerland, tells the story of celebrated serosa singer Rose Pandanwangi, whose life mirrored Indonesia's turbulent post-war period.

Tazewell's involvement is a significant coup for the biographical drama, bringing his award-winning expertise to a story that spans post-war Indonesia and the Netherlands. The designer won the Academy Award for best costume design for his work on "Wicked." Set in post-war Indonesia, "Rose Pandanwangi" follows Rose's journey from wartime Makassar to her rise as a national icon in Jakarta, navigating shifting empires, identities, and expectations.

The film chronicles Rose's career as it flourished even as her marriage quietly unraveled, with her finding kinship with painter Sudjojono in Jakarta's post-war art circles. However, when Sudjojono vanished during the anti-communist purge, Rose faced a world where voices like hers were forced into silence.

For Ertanto, the project represents a deeply personal artistic mission, driven by his love for serosa music and its unique adaptation of Western art song techniques with Indonesian languages, values, and nationalistic themes. Serosa music profoundly shaped his artistic identity, and he is drawn to Rose's story as a powerful representation of resilience and cultural pride.

Tazewell's involvement will undoubtedly bring a high level of craftsmanship to the film, with his expertise in costume design playing a pivotal role in bringing the characters' stories to life. With the project currently in development, fans of "Wicked" and Indonesian culture alike are eagerly awaiting the release of "Rose Pandanwangi," which promises to be an intimate and layered portrait of a woman who refused to be silenced by war, patriarchy, displacement, or politics.

Ugh, another Hollywood star is getting involved in an indie film 🤦‍♂️... I mean, I guess it's cool that Paul Tazewell is on board for "Rose Pandanwangi" since his costume design skills are legit 🎭. But can we talk about how Indonesia has been dealing with its post-war issues and the cultural heritage of serosa music? Like, what about all the unsolved mysteries and stories of the past that still need to be told? 🤔 The fact that Sudjojono vanished during the anti-communist purge is super haunting 😓. I'm sure this film will be great and all, but let's not forget the bigger picture here... 🙅‍♂️
