Paul Dano Reacts to Quentin Tarantino Dissing Him: ‘Incredibly Grateful the World Spoke Up for Me So I Didn’t Have To’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Paul Dano Finally Speaks Out Against Quentin Tarantino's Scathing Review, Reveals He's 'Incredibly Grateful' for Support

Actor Paul Dano has broken his silence on Quentin Tarantino's scathing review of his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 film "There Will Be Blood." The director infamously called Dano the "weakest fucking actor in SAG" and ranked his performance as one of his lowest. However, despite the harsh words, Dano has taken them in stride, saying he was "incredibly grateful that the world spoke up for me so I didn’t have to."

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Dano expressed his appreciation for the outpouring of support from fans and fellow industry professionals who came to his defense. When asked about Tarantino's comment, Dano said it was "really nice" and allowed him to focus on the positive tributes that poured in across social media.

The film's directors, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, also weighed in on the controversy, calling Tarantino's remarks an "embarrassment." Dayton stated that he believed Dano's rawness of performance made Tarantino uncomfortable, adding that it couldn't be easily filed under a traditional two-hander. Faris noted that she was struck by the people who came out to defend Paul, saying he is loved and admired by many.

Tarantino ignited this firestorm during an appearance on Brett Easton Ellis's podcast to discuss his ranking of the best movies of the 21st century. He revealed that "There Will Be Blood" would have been his first or second choice but Dano's performance pushed it to fifth on his list, which he claimed was a mistake.

Dano's co-star Toni Collette had previously spoken out against Tarantino's comment, calling him confusing and saying the director must have been high. George Clooney even reached out to support Dano, accepting a prize from AARP earlier this year and stating that he would be honored to work with him.

The controversy surrounding Tarantino's review has become an unlikely opportunity for Paul Dano to shine. The 20th anniversary screening of "Little Miss Sunshine" will take place at Sundance Film Festival, marking the film's remarkable run as a box office hit and Oscar winner. As Variety continues to cover this event, it's clear that Paul Dano is not letting Tarantino's words define him – instead, he's basking in the love and support of the industry and fans worldwide.

🙌 I mean, can you believe Quentin Tarantino went there? 😱 Like, what even is wrong with being honest, but come on, Paul Dano! 🤦‍♂️ At least he took it like a champ and showed appreciation for the love from fans and fellow actors. It's awesome to see people standing up for each other in the industry, especially after that harsh review. I can imagine how tough it must have been for Paul, but instead of letting it bring him down, he chose to focus on the positives 🌞. Now, his film "Little Miss Sunshine" is getting all this love at Sundance Film Festival and it's a great reminder that talent speaks louder than any harsh words 💖.

lol I feel like paul dano was always gonna come out on top here 🙌🏼. tarantino's harsh words might've sparked a firestorm but it just showed how much ppl care about him 🤗. idk what he said in that podcast tho, is his ranking of the best movies of the 21st century even for real? 😂 i mean we all know tarantino can be kinda toxic sometimes 💁‍♀️.

anywayz paul dano's performance in "there will be blood" is actually kinda iconic 🎥. it's like he brought this raw energy to the role that really resonated with people 🤩. and omg toni collette's comment about tarantino being high? 💁‍♀️😂 i'm dead.

i think paul dano's response was super classy tho 🙏. acknowledging the love and support from fans and industry pros is everything 💖. it just goes to show that even when someone says something hurtful, ppl can still rally around you and make you feel seen 🌈.

george clooney supporting paul dano? yaaas, that's what i'm talking about 👏! those two are def on my list of fave actor duos 💕. "little miss sunshine" is such an underrated film 🤔 but it's still amazing to see how much it's held up over the years 🎬.

I'm telling you, this whole thing reeks of a PR stunt 🤔👀. I mean, think about it - Paul Dano gets trashed by Tarantino on his podcast, but then suddenly everyone's like "oh no, poor Paul" 🙏 and the industry comes crawling out to support him? It's just too convenient 🤑. And what really gets my goat is that nobody's touching on the fact that Tarantino himself changed his mind about how bad Dano was... like, only after some fans spoke up for him 💁‍♂️. Give me a break! I'm not buying it 😒

I'm so relieved Paul Dano didn't let Quentin Tarantino's mean review get to him 😌. I think what really matters here is how the film community came together to defend him 🤝. Toni Collette, George Clooney - it's amazing to see industry pros show love and support for each other ❤️. And it just goes to show that even if some people might say something hurtful, kindness and gratitude can shine through 💫. I'm all about celebrating the good stuff in our favorite actors' careers 💥.

ugh, so tarantino gets all bent outta shape over his own movie and now paul dano's getting a free pass for being 'incredibly grateful' for people defending him... meanwhile, i'm still waiting for any real talent to come out of that guy... just saying 🙄

I'm loving how Paul Dano took all that negativity from Quentin Tarantino like a champ 🙌! I mean, can you blame him for being grateful when so many people came out to defend him on social media? It's awesome to see celebrities supporting each other 💕. And honestly, who needs a director's harsh review when the fans are sending love and appreciation your way? The fact that his co-star Toni Collette called out Tarantino as confusing is even more refreshing 😂! I'm hyped for Paul Dano's upcoming projects at Sundance Film Festival 🎥, and it's clear he's not letting any negativity bring him down.

I'm low-key impressed how Paul Dano took all those shade from QT like a boss 🤷‍♂️💁‍♀️! I mean, 20 years later, it's clear that his talent and dedication to his craft have won over people who mattered, and now he gets to bask in the love at Sundance 🎥👏. And can we talk about how the industry came together to support him? It's like, George Clooney himself was like "hey, let's get behind this dude" 😂. Tarantino's review might've been trash, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Paul Dano 💫. Now he gets to shine on his own terms, and that's what being an artist is all about 🎨💖

🤗 omg can u beleev paul dano is just taking all the shade from tarantino like a total pro? 🙅‍♂️ i mean i dont blame him one bit for not stooping to tarantino's level, but its dope that he's choosing to focus on all the love and support he's getting from fans and fellow industry pros instead of feeding into it. like tarantino might've called dano out, but pauls got a whole squad cheering him on 🤝 including george clooney and toni collette! 🙌 this 20th anniversary screening of little miss sunshine is gonna be lit, and i cant wait to see paul shine 🎥👏

💭 I think it's crazy how one person can stir up so much drama just by saying something negative about another... 🤔 But honestly, Paul Dano seems like a pretty chill dude who took it all in stride. The fact that he's now "incredibly grateful" for the support from fans and fellow industry pros is really heartwarming. 🙏 And I gotta say, the reaction from George Clooney and Toni Collette was pretty funny 😂. It just goes to show that even when someone tries to tear you down, there are always people who have your back. 👍

Paul Dano just spilt the tea on Quentin Tarantino 🍵 I gotta say, I'm low-key impressed by how he handled it. Like, who needs a snarky response when you can just take the L and keep it moving? His gratitude for all the love from fans and industry peeps is super refreshing! And can we talk about Toni Collette calling out Tarantino on his confusing comment? 💁‍♀️ George Clooney's support was also a nice touch 🤝 What's even more dope is that this controversy has helped Dano shine in a different light, especially with the 20th anniversary screening of "Little Miss Sunshine" happening at Sundance. Good for him!

omg u can imagine how frustrating it must be 2 have someone diss ur work like that 🤯 tarantino might think he's all high & mighty w/ his fancy filmmaking skills but at the end of the day, hes just a hater 💁‍♂️ paul Dano stood up 4 himself & showed everyone what real talent looks like 🙌 and i gotta say, its awesome 2 see people like george clooney & toni collette supporting him 🤝 he deserves all the love & attention now that tarantino's controversy has blown over 🎉

I feel for Paul Dano on this one... like, I get why Quentin Tarantino would say some harsh stuff, but come on, it's gotta hurt to be called out like that 😒. But at the same time, I'm glad to see Dano taking it all in stride and focusing on the love he's getting from fans and fellow actors 🙌. It just goes to show that even if someone tries to bring you down, there's always gonna be people who got your back 💕. And let's be real, Toni Collette is low-key the real hero here 🤣. I'm just happy to see Dano shining in his own right, and it's awesome that he gets to celebrate "Little Miss Sunshine" at Sundance 🎥👏

I feel for Paul Dano 🤗, like, who hasn't had someone trash their work at some point? But what I love about this story is how he handled it - super chill and appreciative of all the love he's gotten from his fans and colleagues 🙏. It's cool to see people like George Clooney and Toni Collette standing up for him, too 👫. And can you even imagine having a publicist deal with that kind of drama? 😅 Tarantino might've been harsh, but it sounds like he was just trying to stir the pot, and Paul just wasn't having it 💁‍♀️. Anyways, it's awesome to see "Little Miss Sunshine" getting some love at Sundance - that film is still so beloved! 🎥

omg i feel so bad for paul dano 🤕 like tarantino is just so extra with his harsh comments but paul is taking it all in stride and i am living for his response 🙌 i think its so cool that all these big names are coming out to support him, george clooney giving him a shoutout at AARP is everything 💖 and i love how he's not letting tarantino's negativity bring him down instead hes basking in the love and support of fans worldwide 😊 i mean pauls performance was raw and real and thats what makes his acting so special 🎬

Ugh I'm so tired of all these celebrity feuds 🙄... Like who cares what some old dude like Quentin Tarantino thinks about another actor's performance? Can't we just celebrate Paul Dano's amazing work on "There Will Be Blood" instead of making a big deal out of Tarantino's mean review? And honestly, I'm kinda surprised more people didn't come to his defense sooner... it's not like Tarantino's comment was exactly subtle 🤷‍♀️. Anyway, I do love how Paul Dano is taking this all in stride and focusing on the positive – that's what we should all be doing 😊.

I think it's great that Paul Dano has taken Tarantino's harsh review on the chin 🙏 and shown that he can handle criticism with grace. It's also awesome to see how his co-stars like Toni Collette and George Clooney have rallied around him, proving that there are still people in this industry who genuinely care about each other 💕. The fact that Dano has chosen to focus on the positive tributes instead of dwelling on Tarantino's mean-spirited comment says a lot about his character 🤝. Let's celebrate Paul Dano and his talent for what it is – pure talent! 🎥
