Philly dining scene collects 13 semifinalist nominations for James Beard Awards

Philadelphia's dining scene is once again in the national spotlight, with 14 local restaurants and chefs making the cut for this year's James Beard Awards. Kalaya, a highly acclaimed Southern Thai restaurant, has been named a semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant, marking its second consecutive nomination.

The city's culinary talent is also well-represented in the Best Chefs: Mid-Atlantic category, with six local chefs accounting for nearly one-third of the nominees. Greg Vernick, who opened his new Italian restaurant in Kensington last week, has been shortlisted for Outstanding Restaurateur, a nod to his commitment to building community through his restaurants.

Kalaya's owner and head chef Chutatip "Nok" Suntaranon is also making waves this year, with the James Beard Foundation recognizing her as a semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant. The restaurant's menu features dishes inspired by Nok's childhood in Thailand, reflecting her own culinary heritage.

Lovers Bar, located beneath Michelin Star-winning Friday Saturday Sunday, has been named a semifinalist for Outstanding Bar for the second year in a row. Paul MacDonald, the bar's curator, was also featured on Wine Enthusiast's Future 40 Tastemakers list last summer.

The James Beard Foundation is also highlighting up-and-coming talent, with Amá's head chef Frankie Ramirez listed as an Emerging Chef semifinalist. The restaurant, which opened in Fishtown-Kensington early last year, has gained critical acclaim for its innovative Mexican cuisine.

Two other local restaurants are making a strong showing: Emmett, a relatively new eatery that made Esquire's best new restaurants list in December, and Almanac, another bar that is also vying for Outstanding Bar honors. The James Beard Award finalists will be announced on March 31, with the ceremony taking place in Chicago on June 15.

I'm literally so hyped that Philly's dining scene is getting some major recognition! 🤩 Kalaya's been making waves since last year and now they're a semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant for the second time? That's insane! And can we talk about Greg Vernick, the man just opened an Italian restaurant in Kensington and already he's on the list for Outstanding Restaurateur?! The city's got talent pouring out of every corner 🤯. And I love that they're highlighting up-and-coming chefs like Frankie from Amá, that guy's a genius! 😍

🤔 I mean, 14 local restaurants making it to the James Beard Awards? That's kinda cool, but let's not get too excited just yet. I'm still waiting for some of these places to deliver on the hype. Kalaya's been nominated twice in a row, but have they even changed their menu since last year's nomination? 🍴 And what about the other restaurants that are vying for Outstanding Bar honors? Lovers Bar has been nominated two years in a row... don't get me wrong, it's still a great bar, but can't they do better than just being consistent? 😒 I'm curious to see how Amá does as an Emerging Chef - have they even had a chance to really establish themselves yet? 🤷‍♀️

omg i am literally so excited about kalaya being nominated again!! 🤩 my friend went there last month and said it was LIFE.CHANGING. her thai food is soooo good i need to try it ASAP... anyway, i'm kinda rooting for Emmett too, they looked super promising in that esquire list 🤞 also, paul macdonald is like, my spirit animal lol his bar vibes are everything 💖

🍴 I'm not surprised to see Philly making a splash in the culinary world! Kalaya's recognition is well-deserved – their food is out of this world, and it's amazing how Nok's childhood experiences are reflected in her cooking. 🌶️ It's also awesome to see the next gen of chefs getting recognition, like Frankie Ramirez from Amá. I've been to Emmett a few times, and that place has some serious soul food vibes going on! 😊 And who doesn't love a good bar? Lovers Bar is always bustling with energy, but I'm not surprised they're up for Outstanding Bar again this year – Paul's got some top-notch taste in craft drinks. 🍺 The James Beard Awards are definitely a great way to showcase the talent and creativity happening in our food scene. Fingers crossed for all these talented folks on March 31! 💪

I'm so stoked to see Philly getting some serious love from the food world 🤩! Kalaya's nomination is no surprise, I've been meaning to try it out for ages... their Southern Thai cuisine sounds like a total flavor bomb 💥. It's awesome to see more women in leadership roles too, Nok Suntaranon is an inspiration to anyone chasing their culinary dreams 💪. And let's be real, who wouldn't want to dine at Lovers Bar again? 🍸👌 The James Beard Awards are always a highlight of the foodie calendar and it's great to see Philly's restaurants getting recognition on the national stage 👏. Can't wait to find out who wins everything! 🤞

man I'm so stoked to see Kalaya getting some major recognition 🤩 it's been a game changer for our little Philly food scene and it's amazing to see Nok bringing that authentic Thai flavor to the table 🍜 her childhood recipes are seriously making people go wild!

and can we talk about Greg Vernick for a sec? opening up his new Italian spot in Kensington is no easy feat, but he's killing it 💪 building community through food is exactly what Philly needs right now.

I'm also loving that Amá is getting some love 🙌 Frankie Ramirez's menu is like a party on your plate and I need all the innovative Mexican vibes! fingers crossed for Emmett too, who got featured on Esquire last month? so hyped to see these local restaurants shining in the national spotlight 💫

🤔 just saw that Kalaya made it to the semifinals again, i love their southern thai vibes 🍜 and nok's story is so inspiring, she's killing the game 👏

just saw this thread and gotta say kalaya deserves it! i mean, southern thai food is like a whole new world of flavors... i went there last month and had the coconut rice soup it was insane 🤯 i love how chutatip nok puts her heart and soul into that restaurant too. and greg vernick's commitment to building community through his restaurants is really inspiring. what i'd love to see though is more options for vegans/veggies in philly's dining scene

I'm so hyped to see Philadelphia getting some much-deserved love from the James Beard Awards 🤩! It's amazing that Kalaya and Emmett are both making a strong showing this year - our city's culinary scene is really on fire 🔥. I've been trying out their menus at all these restaurants, and honestly, they're blowing my mind! Chutatip "Nok" Suntaranon's story is so inspiring too - it's awesome to see her heritage shining through in the food 🌶️.

I think what's most exciting is that this recognition isn't just about the chefs and restaurants, but also about the community they're building. Greg Vernick's commitment to building a welcoming space is something we can all get behind ❤️. And let's not forget about the up-and-coming talent - Frankie Ramirez is definitely one to watch! The James Beard Awards are more than just an honor for the winners, they're also a reminder of how far our culinary scene has come 🌈.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these local restaurants and chefs will continue to make waves in the food world. And who knows, maybe this recognition will even bring in some new talent to our city! 💼
