'Pinnacle of westerns': the Oscar-winning writer of Forrest Gump on staging High Noon – with songs by Springsteen

Eric Roth's new play adaptation of High Noon is set for its world premiere and the 80-year-old Oscar-winning writer can barely contain his excitement. The Western classic, which won him an Academy Award in 1995, has long been a staple of cinema, but Roth sees it as the "pinnacle of what a western could be" and is thrilled to be bringing it to the stage.

Roth's journey into theatre was sparked by the relative rarity of non-musical Westerns on stage. He realized that High Noon offered an ideal opportunity for a parable about cowardice, courage, and the struggle against injustice. Despite initial reservations from some actors, Roth has assembled a talented cast, including Billy Crudup and Denise Gough.

The play's structure remains faithful to the original film, with the action unfolding in real-time as the townsfolk prepare for Will Kane's (Crudup) showdown with the vengeful outlaw. Roth's script retains the essence of Foreman's screenplay while injecting fresh perspectives, particularly through Crudup's nuanced portrayal of a more human Will.

One might expect an adaptation to be a dry exercise in translating film to stage, but Roth has taken care to preserve High Noon's temporal compression and elasticity. The result is a thrilling experience that stays true to the original while also allowing for new interpretations and connections with audiences.

For Roth, theatre offers a different breed of collaboration, where respect for creative input is paramount. He finds this environment stimulating, especially after years working in film. His enthusiasm is evident as he delves into the world of stage adaptations, where every word counts and the director's attention to detail is unparalleled.

Roth has shared his experiences collaborating with some of Hollywood's most celebrated directors, including Michael Mann, David Fincher, Martin Scorsese, and Ridley Scott. He speaks candidly about their approaches to filmmaking and offers insights into the complex process of adapting a source material.

High Noon holds a special place in Roth's heart as it has revitalized his passion for storytelling. The world premiere represents not only a milestone in his career but also an opportunity to share this timeless classic with new audiences, allowing them to experience the cinematic masterpieces that he has brought to life on screen.

man I'm so hyped about Eric Roth's new stage adaptation of High Noon 🤠🎭 it's gonna be lit! 80 years young and still bringing it, what can you say? 🙌 the fact that it's a Western classic being reimagined for the stage is just genius. i mean who wouldn't want to see Billy Crudup as Will Kane, he's got the range to bring depth to that character 🤔 plus Denise Gough is amazing in any role.

i love how Roth has stayed true to the original film while also adding fresh perspectives, it's not just a dry translation of the movie. and can we talk about the cast? 👏 they're all talented actors who are gonna knock it out of the park with this production.

for me, theatre is all about collaboration and creative input, and it sounds like Roth has found that environment really stimulating. he's been working with some big names in Hollywood before, but i think stage adaptations require a different level of attention to detail, which is exactly what makes this adaptation so exciting 🎬

can you imagine seeing high noon live on stage? 🤯 i mean we've had some amazing westerns on tv and movies but a live adaptation of this iconic film would be something else. it's been so long since eric roth worked in theatre, i wonder how he'll balance the pacing with the live element, but if anyone can do it, it's him 😎. and that cast? billy crudup as will kane is gonna be super compelling, can't wait to see him bring that character to life on stage 🤸‍♂️

omg i cant believe its finally happening 🤩 Eric Roth is bringing High Noon to stage and im SO down for it!!! he's like a genius or something for getting the script just right after all those years of film work idk how he does it tho lol anyway cant wait to see Billy Crudup bring Will Kane to life on stage 😎

just watched the trailer for Eric Roth's stage adaptation of High Noon and I gotta say... 1 hour drama? that feels like a stretch even for Billy Crudup 🤔. i mean don't get me wrong, he's an amazing actor and all, but real-time showdowns on stage can be super hard to pull off. and what about the other actors in the cast? how long are their scenes supposed to be? 5 minutes? that seems kinda short for a whole act 🙄. also, isn't this just going to be a bunch of folks standing around looking intense? i love westerns too, but can we get some actual action on stage for once? 💥

🤣 can't believe Eric Roth is hyped about adapting High Noon into a play... I mean, it's not like it's a super old movie or anything 😂. But for real, how cool is it that 80-year-old Oscar winners still get stoked about bringing their work to the stage? 🎭 It's great to see he's bringing his expertise to non-musical Westerns on stage - now we just need more of these! 👍 I'm curious to see Billy Crudup as Will Kane, though - will they keep the original film's tension and pace, or will it be a bit of a snooze fest? 😴

idk about all these stage adaptations 🤔... seems like they're just trying to cash in on old classics. High Noon's a great film, don't get me wrong, but do we really need another version of it? and 80 years young still writing scripts? that's some impressive stuff 🙌. but what about the fact that most stage shows are just gonna be dry and boring? i mean, where's the magic in watching a bunch of actors recite lines on a stage when you can have a blockbuster movie with special effects and all that? 🎥
